Guy who wrote the personalities of The Watch here. I'm probably going to incorporate the characters into my superhero webcomic. The characters are good. There's a lot of interesting ways they can play off each other. The only thing they need now are bad guys.

Concepts:

A black woman who can steal, cancel, and transfer super powers. She wants to take the superpowers from the old and politically incorrect golden age superheroes (public domain heroes like Stardust, Daredevil, and Black Terror) and give them "to people who deserve them".

Massacre: One of Queen Ghost's brothers, leader of gang of superpowered thugs. Fancies himself a hit rebel and a "real" superhero sticking it to the man. He also pisses off Jun (Joannie) because he's designed his costume to look like her dad. In keeping with the theme of his family's powers he's got tats that shift and move on his skin and give him super strength. They can also "jump" off his skin which is a power his sisters can't impart on their drawings. Thin Venom's symbiote.

His gang is called The Sparks.


Any other ideas for bad guys? The Sparks need more members. And there's got to be another superpowered gang for them to have gang wars with.

Street Player's family has an abused dog named Leo that they got from a shelter. Leo used to be used to train pit fight dogs and is missing a bit of his ear and tail.

Anansi is Adinkra's mentor and sidekick depending on the mood of the trickster God. He can move around by placing his spirit inside a little robotic drone spider.

Queen Ghost's most used graffiti image is a large stylized unicorn and its basically her pet.

Considering your Massacre, you will also need something to represent "the man". Maybe some violent vigilantes, fighting for what they believe is restablishing order, making little difference between criminal gangs and small thing like tagging. While they want to protect "honest citizens", they have a "If it wasn't you, then it was your brother." mentality. They are not as bad as the Sparks think they are, but still quite bad.

Then you may have a less criminal gang, doing mostly petty things that may look cool to a teenager, that one member of the Watch may have sympathy for but will have to confront at some point.

It's called The Watch as in neighborhood watch.A group of black women are trying to weed out the gangs and supervillians from their neighborhood.

Her name is Jun and she's part Japanese. Her dad was not-Jim Kelly crossed with Black Lightning and she was raised Japanese. Bullied mercilessly for being Black in Japan her father taught her martial arts as a way to deal with her rage. As a teenager she started fighting in superpowered MMA battles and put her skills to the ultimate test fighting the Yakuza in the streets. She also had a brief fling with a not-Kamen Rider superhero who she might start dating again. She's in America for the first time in her life and on scholarship to a prestigious university. While in America she's decided to settle down in her father's old neighborhood to connect with her roots.

She's not connecting well. The neighborhood hates her worse than the schoolgirls back in Japan. They hate that she's a nerd. They hate that she talks with a Japanese accent. They hate that she has money and is successful. They hate that she's not a "real" black.

Jun is very disappointed that the neighborhood is the way that it is and has joined the Watch in a last desperate attempt to find something good and worth fighting for in her dad's neighborhood.

Turned into a living rubber woman in an industrial accent. Once homely looking she's now capable of looking like whatever she wants and uses her shapeshifting to launch a successful modeling career. She's even started acting in B-movies that have hired her for more for her looks than her talent.

Deep down inside she doesn't feel worthy of her newfound fortune.

They can no longer even manifest through the soil of Ghana, stained with blood as it is. So they have come through America and seek to set down roots through Mechanica, their human conduit.

Mechanica manifests the pantheon of her people through technology. She can summon Anansi as a computer program to hack systems. Her battle armor is a shell that Asase Yaa, Earth Mother of Ghana, possesses. Mechanica is a very meek and shy girl, totally not cut out for battle. But in the heat of battle Asase Yaa enters her and guides her, a courageous voice in the back of her mind.

She grew up in the hood, the daughter of a single mother. She had to watch her brothers slowly drift to rival gangs and start fighting each other. Determined to bring peace both to her brothers and to the hood she uses her power to bring her drawings to life to leave painted guardians around the city, particularly in the abandoned places of urban decay.

She's always liked the old architecture of the city and always hated how the gangs would convert them to meth labs and crack houses. Now they're quiet, peaceful places where birds nest in broken windows and flowers grow from cracks in the floor.

They are places of safety. And woe be those that violate that safety.

Her drawings can't directly interact with the three dimensional world. But they can touch shadows which "count" as other "drawings" as far as her power is concerned. If one of her drawings grabs a person's shadow they can lift them in the air or worse.

The gangs are starting to figure out that her drawings need shadows to work and are striking back at night, erasing her work and reclaiming the places she kicked them out. She's going to need help to continue her fight against the gangs and so joins The Watch.

Tag's name was changed to Queen Ghost because in graffiti slang Queen=a skilled burner artist and Ghost=a burner that is hard to rub out or destroy. So she's an "unstoppable artist". It also ties into her graffiti creations acting like guardian ghosts to the abandoned places of the city.

One of her brothers is Massacre, leader of the gang The Sparks.

Her little sister wants to be a superheroine to, but she's only five years old and is too young to fight. She has similar powers but uses chalk and sidewalk instead of wall and paint.

She has the power to control the ground in a limited capacity. She can "play" streets. This means she can cause a strip of ground to suddenly behave as if its a conveyor belt. She can only have one "street" active at a time but can use it to rapidly move herself, allies, enemies, or objects. She can impart a "static" quality to her street that lets it transport things up shear vertical surfaces (so she can "zip" up buildings) She can also impart a slight incline to her street to create a makeshift object launcher.

She's the owner of a local diner hoping to make enough money so that she can finally move her business out of the hood. At first she doesn't care about the hood at all but the Watch gradually convinces her not to move and join them in fighting to make the hood a good place to live in. She's the last member to join.

She's married and cares only for her husband and children and at first only cares about getting them as far away from the hood as possible. But eventually decides to fight for their home.

Her power represents her character's internal struggle. It can moves things away from her and moves things toward her.

She owns a dog named Leo she got from a shelter. Leo was abused and used as a training dog for pit fights. She has a particular hatred for gangstas that do dog fights because of this.

The problem with all ideas posted on this thread is that they look too specific to a time period or fashion trend, when they should look "superheroic".
Everything here just screams "modern superhero", when there should be no such thing, just "superhero".

They don't have an iconic and timeless design like Spider-Man, Doctor Doom or Captain America.

Although his designs draws inspiration from the death reaper, robots, knights, mages and the Tin Woodman, Doom doesn't seem to belong to a specific era. You can throw him in the dark ages or on a cyberpunk future that his design will work well. You can throw him in any scenario, you can make him funny, scary, pompous, heroic, and the character will work. Doom is the absolute perfect design.
Spider-Man doesn't look like an spider yet conveys the idea of a "spider man" very well, and, although he was created in the sixties, he seems modern to this day.
Wolverine doesn't look like a Wolverine. He wears fucking yellow and blue, he shouldn't be a badass, yet he is and his design works.
And they all work in different drawing styles. They look nice whether on Steve Ditko pencils or on the anime-like Capcom games.

You guys need to study more classic, specially Kirby and Ditko designs and understand better how superheroes actually work, or else you guys will end with a 2000's Luke Cage.

Captain America is Golden Age as fuck, it's what made him stand out when they brought him back compared to the streamlined and primarily two-toned superhero designs of the 60s.

Doom did get redesigned when the did a cyberpunk future version in Doom 2099.

Wolverine has had multiple redesigns throughout the years and most artists downplay the head and boot fins, as they're seen as outdated design elements.

I don't know, I think it depends on what mood the thread is going for in this universe. The Milestone heroes for example were almost all very modern looking because it fit the tone of the series. A nive way to see if you design is good is to imagine how Kirby would draw it or how it would look drawn by Ditko. Or draw it along classic designs and see how it works.

You don't get it. That was the idea, otherwise it would just be "Doctor Doom in 2099", not "Doom 2099". They purposely made a timeless design onto a cyberpunk design.
Classic Doom didn't look out of place in 2099, as 2099 never presented something beyond what we saw in past comics.
It's interesting how Latveria itself blends tchnology with fairy tales aesthetic and Doom never looks out of place. In one panel he is in some dark medieval tower then in the next in some high tech underground lab with 60's furniture. And it just works.

And I don't think Cap looks that Golden Age. His first design perhaps, but his classical design is timeless and stylish. It does look more gaudy than, let's say, Spider-Man, but this fits the patriotic motif.
The most Golden Age-esque designs are forgotten heroes like those from Dynamite Project Superpowers series. Like future car concept's that scream the era they were made.

Ditko's Spider-Man was pretty grounded, yet his design wasn't something stuck to the sixties. Meanwhile, Fantastic Four may be dated in the family side of the book, but the comics balanced it with the balls to the wall crazyness that were most stories.
Milestone heroes look pretty shit today and if they were rebooted, they would need modern redesigns. Heroes that try to be modern but happen to be stuck in the time period they were created need to be constantly reinvented and modernized.
The more modern it is, the more it get's dated.

You're also forgetting that what is and isn't fashionable isn't necessarily short-term and is also cyclical. Pirate boots instantly date a design to pre-90s, which gives roughly 50 years when they were fashionable and almost 30 when they weren't. Using the Milestone characters picture earlier as an example, Icon is pretty grounded in the Silver Age aesthetic with a Golden Age throwback in the cape. Rocket is pretty much a typical Kirby design with a jacket on top, and Hardware is pure 80s.

Graceful Lines could be apart of a larger "JLA" sort of superhero team, an established superhero team. They don't really deal with street level threats, and this causes the hood to resent them. But they got a point. They can't wave a magic wand and save the hood. Change can only come from the people, not from above.

Graceful Lines is still a jealous bitch and hates Bounce, but she's not evil. She's just afraid of being outshined by someone who's never "earned" her powers.

What about cops?
I would like cops to be competent for once, able to take care of regular non superpowered gang members.
The police chief would be a no-nonsense guy that know when take risks and when to pull out his men when confronted with a superpowered freak they can't deal with.
He could be first presented as a villain going after the Watch, until he decide to take them down not with superpower or weapon, but good old detective work to find out their identity. He will slowly be closing on them in the most mundane ways, but when he finally confronts them he now knows enough about them to realise they are good people and just keep on eye on them. Some "villainous" things about him we were presented earlier are revealed to be bias from the girls.

Though it would make sense to also have supercops at some point.
Maybe megacorps security forces/drones too.
