I absolutely loathed that show, I hated literally every single thing about it. I was a young weeb then, I just found it insulting. I remember googling the real life "idols" because I thought it was just an Overton Window thing and they were testing whether Americans would be open to idol worship the way Japs do. Problem is we're not wired like the Japanese, we don't always like things because we're told they're popular because we expect people to do something first. Their music was horrible and their English was incomprehensible, I have no idea why those two were chosen to get their own cartoon show in America.

I always hated Doug. I can't really explain it. It offers a lot of the things I'd normally like in a cartoon, but I'd mostly shut it off as a kid and go stand in the yard or something if it was on. I was that bored.

Ahhhh! Real Monsters and Hey Arnold share this distinction, but they came out around the time I was starting to get into that phase where watching cartoons was "uncool." I think I started Junior High around then and it was only acceptable to watch DBZ or the Simpsons without getting beaten up.

The Lion King 2. It's not completely terrible, but it's pretty damn bad. Kovu overcomes his years of evil brainwashing in the space of one scene, Kiara is completely forgettable, the songs are lousy, and the plot is way too predictable.

The movie also makes the mistake of telling too much instead of showing. They don't really SHOW you that Zira's raising Kovu to be an assassin; they just have Rafiki tell you that she's "filling his heart with hate," and then Simba says that he's "following in Scar's paw-prints," and then they have Kovu act vaguely sinister for the next few scenes. You don't really see Kovu's supposed hate for Simba or his parallels with Scar much at all. You also don't really see Kovu's change of heart much either. Simba just tells him that Scar was an asshole and bam, Kovu gives up all his hatred.

They also seem like they're trying to portray Scar as this terrifying Khan-type character, with one scene having Simba say that Scar "Couldn't give up his hatred, and it destroyed him," or something like that, and it doesn't really fit. Scar wasn't destroyed by his own hatred; he was destroyed because Simba came back to kick the crap out of him.

Oh, and the "Following in Scar's paw-prints" line is stupid. "Following in Scar's footsteps" works just fine. Lions have feet.

Worst of all, the episodes that were supposed to tug at your heartstrings were exploitative as hell. Not earned at all. Jurassic Bark is insultingly gratuitous. Any idiot can write pathos. First, you probably first liked it as a kid. That's my case. Second, there are few and I do mean few if any cartoons that are as batshit insane as R&S. There's more than toilet humor to it. The subtext to Ren & Stimpy is artistic, creative, and industrial rebellion. It's something like MAD magazine was in its day but in the realm of animation. Everyone else imitated the superficial elements. The art direction, the off-model creativity, the voice acting, it all adds up into a cartoon that was often imitated but never duplicated. I completely understand how Ren & Stimpy can be off putting but I'll always defend it.
