Vertigo never gets promoted by websites and shit. Most of the indie darlings become big when people post and repost out of context panels from comics

Look at their line right now. Look at what they have set up for the future. In the last few years they've gone through periods where the entire imprint online published 2-3 titles for a month. They never plan ahead and just hope that some ongoing catches on.

Vertigo is under Warner, which means all the creative rights of a book remain under their umbrella. If authors can do it, they make their indie book at Image, so they maintain full creative control.
