References don't mean shit when they tackle a concept. Say what you want about the show, but if there's one thing its good at it's subverting cliches and using them to tell something new. The Tiny Rick episode's a good example as it takes a tired cliche of ___ character gets younger but puts a spin on it by having the character becoming trapped in a suicidal body. Just because you show 3 unrelated wasteland societies, one of which was just a fucking medieval fantasy for some reason with no explanation (which is ok if it doesn't matter to the overall plot, but for this it does kinda matter as the overall plot doesn't know what it wants to say about the Mad Max formula aside from a tacked on parallel to the Divorce at the end). What I watched for the last 22 minutes was a giant fist kill a bunch of dudes in a weird metaphor for Morty's rage against his father while Summer got really edgy and stopped being edgy once society formed and Rick acting like ten times more of a dick than he usually is for some McGuffin that in no way affects the actual overarching plot of the season

I honestly thought Pickle Rick might be jumping the shark until I saw the preview tonight. It seems like it's going to be satirical and self aware enough to potentially be good. The randumb humor is really just to appeal to a wider audience. The real interesting parts of the writing are the way it subverts tried and true tropes. Season 3 episode 1 had an absolutely brilliant moment with the whole Rick backstory thing. It was so goddamn on the nose for the most cliche tragic backstory possible that I felt like a complete idiot for even believing it could be real for a second.

I like the concept of Pickle Rick. Him being something small that works his way towards being a killing machine by using other creatures bodyparts is something that attracts me a lot as a concept.
