extremely easy way to have characters acting differently rather than realistically writing changes in personality which most media can't even get right over the course of their entire run never mind a dramatic heel-turn for one instance

Need a powerful character to switch to the villain's side to create conflict? You can either build up a growing resentment to the heroes/genuine reason for the character to switch sides that takes three books or seasons, or you can just say "Hey this villain can make characters do things."
