Princess and the Frog was pretty fucking lackluster, honestly. And what the fuck was with the stupid fly? Am I supposed to mourn the death of an incredibly annoying character?

When will Disney do a Hunchback live action and cast Peter Capaldi as Frollo?

I have a real weakness for "I Won't Say I'm in Love", but ironically enough, in the Spanish dub.

Facilier was wasted in it. He only had a few scenes, and they were undercut by a very by-the-numbers movie.

Also based Keith David.

I'm just annoyed that the two main humans (who are both pretty hot) were frogs for almost the entire movie. I mean I'm not fond of humans turning into animals (for 90% of the movie) in general, but frogs in particular are really uninteresting (unless drawn realistically).

But yeah I was more interested in/cared more about the human characters.

Not to say that animal characters aren't as interesting; it was just the ones in TPATF were very dull.

Maybe they aren't eligible for an objective "best" tier, but I've always had a soft spot for Ratigan's songs. They easily drive home the emphasis on the "villain" part better than any others in the category by far, and not to mention Vincent Price could make a phone book sound eerily captivating.

I'm more bothered by the changed version, of at least first line. Because we've seen segregation and discrimination, and demonstrations against that discrimination being met with the lyrics in the changed version. I can get why the original seems bad, but with historical hindsight, the changed version seems worse.
>>
>>94258270

I think people were just bothered by "redskin" specifically since it's considered an epithet. The first line did show up in the most recent anniversary soundtrack version.
>>
>>94257773
But in a way that's why it's great, and encapsulates why Jafar is a good villain. It took a really great, loud, heroic song meant to build Aladdin up and make him look good, and twisted it into a humiliating display that showed Jafar's triumph.

Story wise it hits a perfect note, not to mention it's catchy.

"You're Only Second Rate" and "My Lullaby" from the straight-to-video sequels to Aladdin and Lullaby wouldn't make my top five list, but they're pretty good songs that no one remembers.

My top five would be

1. Poor Unfortunate Souls
2. Gaston
3. Friends on the other side
4. Hellfire
5. Be Prepared

Friends on the Other Side might be higher on the list if I hadn't heard it ten billion times when the movie came out. Hellfire is so different from other Disney villain songs I have trouble ranking it.
>>
>>94256880

This Maleficent looks way too silly.
>>
>>94258492

I get why they didn't want a racial slur in a Disney movie (and why the "they cut off your ears if they don't like your face" from Arabian Nights got changed), but I kind of don't like the villain explicitly being against racial diversity in those exact words. Seems a little on the nose.

It takes on a more evil meaning after you've seen the movie and know how things turn out. Hans flat out states his intentions and you wouldn't get that the first time.

>>94266282

>I've found my place
>say goodbye to the pain of the past

>"I have 12 brothers btw"

the song is all about Hans' Machiavellian plan to steal the throne and the danger of marrying a literal stranger

The unfortunate reality of Friends On The Other Side is that it's terribly structured. Half the song is spent on the shitty card section, with some of the most boring, predictable lyrics that mostly just tell us what we already know anyway.
>on you little man I don't wanna waste much time
>you've been pushed round all your life
>you've been pushed round by your mother and your sister and your brother
>and if you was married you'd be pushed round by your wife
WOW SO CLEVER RANDY

All the songs in this movie are lopsided or just unnecessary. Randy Newman is a songwriter that's used to filling 3 min on the radio, not telling a story in a musical theater context.
>>
>>94276768
Personally I hate the bit in the end where he says
>I hope you're satisfied, but if you ain't don't blame me
>You can blame my friends on the other side
>You got what you wanted
>What you want's what you get
Like.. did you really need 4 lines to say "careful what you wish for"? Like we get it, this deal probably won't work out for him too well..

Also kind of triggers me that he didn't even agree to anything. The witchdoctor guy just asks him to shake his hand after telling him a bunch of stuff he sees in his future. Doesn't say he's making and kind of deal or going to do anything for him..

Kind of hated this film because the whole thing felt lazy and needed more work in almost every aspect. A shame too because it effectively killed 2d animation at disney forever.

Fuck you right back for misunderstanding my post and just being a general pleb.

I agree, "You've Got A Friend In Me" is great. But notice: it has no obligation to advance the story. It acts as underscore to an unrelated visual sequence (only related emotionally). The same thing goes with all the songs in the movie. The little bit of actual storytelling is kinda used in a few stanzas of "I Will Go Sailing No More."
>But no it can't be true
>I could fly if I wanted to
>Like a bird in the sky if I believe I can fly
>why I'd fly
...
>Clearly, I will go sailing, no more
This is so simple and on the nose, it ONLY works because it is NON-DIAGETIC. The story is being told visually; the song is unnecessary, so even in this instance it's acting as underscore. And that's why it gets away with it -- if it was a musical and Buzz actually sang those words himself, it'd be a fucking cringe.

As I said, Newman is a SONGWRITER, writing that kinda shit is his bread and butter. He is not a LIBRETTIST. Songs in musicals are functionally different: they're character monologues/dialogues, an essential part of a greater story. The audience's attention is vastly more focused on each stanza than in almost any other context. That's why songwriters like Elton John and Randy Newman had so much trouble with their Disney assignments -- they're unaccustomed to packing their songs with the information and density required for musical theater storytelling.

Oh shit. I forgot how catchy this one is

This guy gets it. The songs in this movie are sometimes musically cool, but are largely a waste of time. That's reason #1 why the movie failed.

Keith David though. It's the whole reason people like the song.

Elton John doesn't even write lyrics
>>
>>94278455
This just reminds me how much better the localized version was here.
It has lines like (not necessarily rhyming here because I don't feel like properly translating it into a song, so it will just be literal)
>I flew upon moon beams
>Across the shining sky
>Up I rose with greatest ease
>For the dream bestows us wings
>My silver ship will never again fly on the path of light
>What awaits us after the dreams?

>But no! For the sky awaits me
>Yes, I hear the distance call
>My arms fly me to the sky
>My faith's wings as my aid
>My soul flies!

And then the last line as he's broken on the ground:
>Is there life after the dreams?
>>
>>94283358
Tim Rice wrote the final lyrics, but it wasn't an equal partnership. Elton still spearheaded the project.

King of Thieves was the finale for Aladdin. They even kissed Robin Williams' ass to get him back. I dunno what the budget was, but it's clear that a lot more money went into it than Return of Jafar (which was basically a glorified pilot for the tv series).
>>

This was a classic. Its great because it shows how much history him and the main character, Basil, have with each other. This is just a small section of their adventures.

yup "dirty red skinned devils" was part of the song originally
I got the song on itunes, and it's the orignal for the most part, has the disgusting race and lets go kill a few men parts still in it

but the dirty red skinned devils was changed, you can clearly tell when they spliced out for "dirty shrieking devils"

1 extra part was changed when Ratcliff shouts "lets go kill a few men!" to one of the other main settler characters shouts "let's go get them men!"
