For starters, don't use the circle or line tools. I know it's tempting, but it looks unprofessional. Never be lazy! Sometimes you have to draw things you don't want to draw to get a good product. Also, the proportions of the arms and legs look a bit wonky. Sometimes one of the limbs are longer than the other and it often looks unsettling. Don't draw stick figures. But most importantly, never use Comic Sans.

Yeah I know about all these things! The shape tools, the comic sans the stick figures... the whole schtick of the comic is that it's comedic... but not well drawn... or the humans aren't anyway.

After this comic's over, I plan on doing a serious comic. Here's a little concept art for that... (I still used the shape tool, but it's just a beginning sketch y'know?)

Toying with the idea of a comic focused on witch's familiars. Here's a WIP design for an extra-thick witch character. (I seriously need to stop letting my dick influence my art, I'm turning this entire story concept lewd just by the designs) Mostly happy with it, but I'll be redrawing that hat, doesn't look right. Thoughts?
>>
>>94216329
hat looks good. it has a fun tilt off to the side
her thickness is pretty awful though, not because of any weird puritain guilt you're feeling, but because it's severely disproportionate. She could fit her entire hand in her mouth, and for a girl like that that's dangerous. Her tits are also too high and everything else seems vertically abbreviated. Go ahead and think with your dick, but try to think with your aesthetic sense too. It guided you really well on her face, which is purty.
>>
>>94216329

That last drawing was just going to be in the background, being cute and explaining why she suddenly knew words.. but I couldn't find room for it, kept reworking it, ended up doing more work. It's at least amusing to me that those who don't have automatic clothing repair might be slightly jelly. T'was Megan's idea to work this in. She has good ideas. Lots of 'em.
Either way I had fun drawing possibly the best attack ever one more time
>>
>>94216374

Thanks for the criticism, I definitely see what you mean about the proportions now that it's been pointed out.

>>94216494

Yeah, you're right, she's fat. Designed her with the intention of being well, just thick, but I think I lost that with the proportions.

I kind of like the idea of her being fat, though, considering my idea for the character. She's going to be a descendant of the Hansel and Gretel type witch, living in a gingerbread house and all that. She doesn't eat kids like the Hansel and Gretel witch, but there could be some jokes there, other witches teasing her about it because of her being fat. "Oh, how many kids did you eat today?", stuff like that.
>>
>>94216949
That's a funny idea actually. More like she's been eating her gingerbread house
Just remember, fat is just like clothes.. it's something you're wearing over your bones, so draw a skinny person (in terms of construction) first, THEN add the fat, giving it appropriate weight. That way your proportioning will never go wrong

Just a quick work over, but I think in general her legs would suggest to me that her torso, chest area would be longer, and overall taller figure. Her upper body in general have not been build up structurally, so it would help if you familiar yourself with what's underneath before laying on the thicc.

Although a lot of it just what I got attempting to make sense of things by drawing on top it, alot comes down to my personal preferences, you might have something different in mind, so take it with a grain of salt.

Hopefully this makes sense.

Overly busty superhero Pulse is trying to find out about the powers her father (the guy with the glasses) once had. She can get that information if she steals something of seemingly no importance from her father and gives it to a friendly rival.

She's built a drone for another reason, and using testing it as a cover to look for the item she has to steal. It was said to give off a signal. And she can use the drone to scan for that signal.

So I'm trying to rely the information I need to tell in a limited space, and retell some of the information from earlier in the comic in case it's not remembered.

I worry it's not as obvious as it could be in panel 5 that she found it. Maybe I should have had a visual kind of light for the drone scanning or something.

She has to steal it in two pages if I stick to my (semi-recent) 12 page chapter rule. I have the other pages planned out, but I'll have to keep tweaking them to make sure they're as easy to follow as I can.

In panel 1, I think he probably has his head turned too much compared to his body, now that I look at it. And it still seems like it might be weird without any text, but I wanted a transition from the last page.

You would have been better served writing "Racism is BAAAAAD!" and nothing else. What you're doing works fine as a vehicle for simple jokes, but you're not going to make anything that's "serious" of worth or interest with this little effort. This comic tells the viewer nothing except the extremely obvious.

Never do this again.
Flip the panel, or put one at the top and one at the bottom, but it's considered bad practice to have balloon tails crossing like that.

Also, what's your target audience?
"Cunt" is quite a strong swearword and would easily get you a Mature rating.
inb4 britbongs using it as casual punctuation.

P3: *Should

P5: "I will do" or "I'll do that" sound better.

P8: I'd put line breaks in after "garden" and before "lowliest". That one line is just a little too long.

P9: As stated, avoid crossing balloon tails like that.
Best to move the top right balloon into the bottom right.
Or, left balloon into the top left, and right balloon a little lower.

Assuming London British, you can get away with "ya cheeky cant" if you want to drop the rating.

Nice colors, dude!
I just started feeling something was off during the color phase. Color has always been my weakest when it came to filling in semi clean lines. I feel better when I get to be sloppier I guess.
>>
>>94222507
I need to redo it but an amnesiac construct awakens with nothing but her research notes on the plague and uses it to figure out what happened leading up to that event.
The other mc in the same story is a fledgling doctor whose family was assaulted and experimented on, following a similar pursuit of knowledge and revenge to reverse what has happened to them and their family.

An. Edit in progress kind of. I'm trying to divorce myself from the first two drafts of the story.
>>
>>94222507
Well I hope I get what a character arc is right

His first character arc is him opening up to his teammates who later become his family of choice. He had a really shit past but his squad boss showed concern for him right away, the rest of the squad had a "tsundere" approach to him.

His second arc is discovering that he isn't as much of a coward as everyone -even himself- think, when he decided to sacrifice himself fighting a battle he knew he couldn't win just to buy time for his friends to get away. He survives though.

His third arc is him coming to terms with his past, when the source of all his traumas comes "back to life" and so he has to fight his own represed fears and demons, while also trying to protect what remains of his chosen family from them.
>>
>>94223012
That's for the first part, then the events lead up into them finding out the cause of their mess was the same guy. The amnesiac is tempted by the knowledge the Bad Guy is offering and to give up the doctor friend for it and it's a moral dilemma.
>>
>>94218834

>>
>>94222507
Life should have a character arc of her finding a way to find genuine joy in her job, but the most she gets over a lot of time -and Death's motivational speeches- is her tolerating some of the outcomes.

Death has more of a character arc going on for him, which I find quite ironic because he was thought more as a help but became second main MC the more I wrote about him. His deal is mostly that he actually likes Life but doesn't want to pursue any kind of serious relationship because his job will eventually make him take her life away and he thinks he will avoid the pain that way. It comes to Life of all people to make him accept that side of the "you only live once" concept.
>>
>>94222507
one of my MC's has a pretty rough time trying to figure himself out. His body was altered to such a biological level that he has to continue taking the drug that caused it or his body will break down. He has to learn to deal with the fact that nothing can change the past and that he has to be who he needs to be (but doesn't want to be) in order to continue his goal. He gets into a lot of ordeals and his whole story is really just suffering.
>>
>>94222507
>MC starts as a naive girl who believes that everyone is worthy of forgiveness
>The Love interest/villain loses his shit and orders a purge that kills 1/10 of the worlds population
>MC becomes pessimistic asshole
>>
>>94222507
Most of them just want money. One of them just wants that sweet sweet adrenaline rush. Eventually they get both the money and the rush.
Most of the events that drive them are people offering to pay them money for their service.
I'm a firm believer in not shoving unneeded morals where they don't need to be, the story just is, it's a story, it entertains, it's fulfilled its purpose as far as I care.

Well, how does he kill even a 1/10 of the population? That's a lot of fucking bodies for just a guy with swords. He doesn't find some kind of ancient doomsday device and reactivate it or something?
>>
>>94223637

He does, but he doesn't use it for that. By this time he controls 2/3rds of the world and just systematically kills those who don't submit over the course of a year

Are there any webcomics focused around detectives/mystery?

I have been working on a concept for a comic with realistic cases but outlandish character behaviours/designs. Like Ace Attorney, but a police procedural rather than courtroom drama.

I'm not sure if the concept would work well as a webcomic though? Maybe I ought to publish entire chapters at once rather than daily page updates, so readers can better keep track of the mystery?
>>
>>94222507
He needs to learn that the women around him treat him like dirt and use him, but just because he's going through turmoil in his personal life he still has a responsibility to those he has to protect, as he's the only one who can protect them.
>>
>>94222507
The MC starts shy and cowardly, and lets others tread right over him because it's the only way he knows to get others to accept him. With the heroine's guidance, he realizes this mentality is only hurting him, and that he has no real friends because people like him only as a punching bag. He starts to become more assertive, and more courageous to pursue the heroine, whom he has feelings for.

The Heroine starts off as seemingly confident and personable, but then it's revealed this was only a persona, and in her daily life she's a grumpy and stand-offish person. She's actually a genius, and wants people to acknowledge that, but most just find her condescending and obnoxious, and prefer to just ignore her. Being with the down-to-Earth MC makes her realize that her smarts aren't enough to get other people to like her, but she needs to treat them as equals as well.
>>
>>94223829
You can publish entire chapters if you want but keep in mind you have to watch out how it will appear on your front page if you don't use "bookmark" widgets

Also pretty much anything works as a webcomic plot as long as you know how to write it, and I know I need more procedurals in my life. My local TNT Series channel became pretty much Detectives and Police series only and is not enough
>>
>>94223829
>Are there any webcomics focused around detectives/mystery?

well the cult control webcomic that gets posted here is pretty much detective work, isn't it?

Other than that I only know about a furry comic that has a few detective/mystery chapters. I forgot the name though, something with utopia on it.

I'm not American so I don't really get those references, from what I can see, Monk I guess? Thanks, I must admit it isn't a huge deal in the comic's plot itself since it's mostly just gags and chilling, it only comes out as Death's reason to not wanting to get serious at first. Their boss is the only other one who knows the "secret", since he is the personification of Mystery. I couldn't resist.

I don't like comics where all the girl's tits are bigger than their heads.

My comic is growing way too slow. No subscribers, everyone would rather read comics about gay boys or self-deprecating autobiographicals. How fucking unoriginal can you get? I'm assuming the average tapastic reader is a 14 year old with blue hair.

I can't speak about main character arcs for my comic, but the band my charcaters are in will evolve and be a big deal in the comic's universe.
Since this is kinda taking place in a bizarro version of Metalocalypse, the band will likely meet not-dethklok members and stuff. I want my comic to loosely tie in with metalocalypse in a very vague way. I though about the basist from gloryhol being a temporary replacement in not-dethklok for a chapter or two, unable to keep up with their dangerous lifestyle or something. Not everything is planned, and i'm trying like hell to make contact with Brendon Small to have more info on how metalocalypse would have ended, but shit ain't happening soon.
But on the bright side: a french pagan metal band has been starting to promote my comic on their facebook page, as they seem to like my stuff, I wish I could make them write some songs with me for the band, so my comic could have a soundtrack to go with. Could be cool to have a Gloryhöl EP alongside the comic or something.

to be honest, I keep the presets from manga studio on this. I guess I'll have no problems with that in terms of printing.
>>
>>94231109
If you're aiming to get printed, then there's a specific aspect ratio you want, and the size isn't super important as long as it's above a certain size. Go 3000x4000 and you cannot go wrong sizewise (I don't think that's the exact 8.5x11 aspect ratio though. Hey, here's an idea, tell your program 8.5x11 then tell it 300dpi and see what it gives you. alternately, tell it 8.5x11 then go to resize and tell it 3000 pixels, whatever the 11 turns into, that's fine)

I just watched the old webtoon since somebody put it in the thread, it's honestly ten times better and it's much more gracefully presented.

Ok, a bit of a weird question.

There's this character of mine who I have a hard picking a love interest for. The character (I'll call him character A) is a guy and there's another guy (character B) and a girl (character C) that both have reasons and chemistry to have a decent relationship with character A.

>choose the relationship that would help the story or choose both at different times

The problem is each character has their own baggage and like a dating sim the story would change based on who character A picks as well as all the characters involved developing differently based on those events. Furthermore both paths have pros and cons of similar weights so it's hard to pick between them. Due to this, I'm kinda left to choose the path based on personal preference.

I kinda prefer character A and C being together but I already have too many heterosexual relationships in my story.

>Don't write a characters/relationships for brownie points

I know. I don't want to write AxB for progressive praise but rather to balance out my cast. I want everyone to feel included in the story and I really don't want to leave any group out.

What do?
>>
>>94231278
Better story > feeling included
If you want gaybos to feel included, leave some unpaired characters and let them decide. People love that shit.
>>
>>94231218
dude I work with like 9000 pixels on 300dpi.

>>94231252
I think when you're doing something that is obviously going to draw comparisons, it's good to just put something right out there that makes it clear you're aware it's obvious and you'd rather just wink about it. Maybe put the other thing on a tv in the background, that kind of thing.
>>
>>94231278

>>
>>94231278
The unfortunate part about this post is that you are leaving out what kind of characters they are. If we are to determine who has more chemistry with who, we'd need to see them in action.

When in doubt, write drafts.

Also don't forget, if you really think there's too many straighties, do you really want to write a gay couple? Doing something like that has to be a thing you really want to do and are willing to put the time into doing while feeling like it's right.

Otherwise you get a gay audience member like me reading willis shit and rolling their eyes.

make them as bland as possible, then construct their personalities around their perception of the world, their relationships (going deeper than "hurr durr my parents were killed") and then try to make them blend in the best way possible in your world.

My characters are designed around people I know, friends, acquaintances. I base their relationships around my own experiences, so there it is. I treat them as actors: like Harry is played by "me" as i put some of my features on him like beard and all, ezekihell is based on my best pal etc.
Saying all that, I still don't consider this characters as self inserts, as i work around the situation and the fictional nature of the medium to make them stand out in a way.

>>
>>94233171
You still need a hook, visually speaking. Something that sets the character apart from the crowd, so that if someone were to draw a picture of them or cosplay them at a con, you would be able to easily recognize it from the sea of generic OCs or even worse the mass of normal 3D irl humans walking around the streets.
>>
>>94233541
Oh god, I think about that all the time. I would absolutely shit a brickload if anyone ever cosplayed as my characters. That's my primary goal in character design, even if I don't think about it conciously. I want this to be something a person would cosplay as, or buy a toy of (or MAKE a custom toy of), or draw in their own style
>>
>>94233468
frighteningly accurate.

>>94233599
Even in a realistic setting you need to do this. Something about your characters visual design needs to pop so that they stick in the reader's memory. Think about drawing a picture of your OC and sharing it with someone who knows literally nothing about what you're doing. If their reaction is "Why did you just show me a picture of a guy wearing a suit? Did you like the outfit of someone you met at work?" You've got some work to do.

animal OCs, often from a template, drawn in either Lion King or Balto kinda style, with a bunch of spiky hair and a ton of different neon colors.. and a super special snowflake name and a ton of little specific details like a scar here and a marking there and claws painted these colors...
>>
>>94233724
I've never seen a character with vitiligo, but I'd like to. It's kind of cool. It's just really hard to draw since you'd have to keep the spots consistent and make sure it got slowly worse over the seasons
seriously of all the autoimmune disorders, vitiligo is the coolest. It sucks people never naturally have spots beyond freckles. Spots are cool.
>>
>>94233867
There is nothing wrong with having your character have scars/tattoos/etc that they got as a part of their backstory. It just comes across as autistic if you dump a fuckhueg paragraph worth of exposition about what they mean in your character reference sheet, as opposed to leaving that shit in the actual story, where it belongs.

Oh well I mean it more on the OC don't steal area. Once you get too much taste of tumblr you find that every character has heterochromia or vitiligo or both.

As for actual funded media I remember someone once posted about a cartoon here in /co/, it was about a bunch of kids with Egyptian lore and one of them had vitiligo

You gotta keep in mind this is a 3 page short. Any theme that needs a whole lot of exposition for anyone to understand what is going on is not going to work well. The setting being the post apocalypse can be established in 1 panel. Same with the previous topic of space castaway.

we don't usually do that in english unless we're talking about people. You'd wanna say "the ones that have cute kittens on them"
I wonder what that is at the end.. her suspicions about the wound? Or.. not liking being called Lucy..
>>94240274
yeah it looks like there was a concious evasion of sidemouth there and it didnt work out. I can never not draw sidemouth. it looks weiird.
I think it's because in real life, people have cheeks.. so an open mouth isnt visible much at all from the side. Like, you know how eyes get narrower when seen from the side, because they face forward? mouths do the same.. but unlike eyes, a mouth that looks horizontally narrow comes off as a very specific 'ooh' mouth, that you don't always want.
>>
>>94240614
Yeah I just double checked and googled "open mouth in profile" and every single real-life photograph looked freaking weirdly unreal. I don't think I could draw that, or ever see it and not think it looked odd.
On page 1 though, the problem is her lower jaw is too big and sticks out too far, or rather her upper jaw and nose area doesn't stick out too far enough.
>>

The art looks rushed, sloppy and lacks strong or even decent fundamentals. Characters' facial structures change from panel to panel. Bodies look flat, and hands in particular lack structure.

>>
>>94241258
certainly, doesn't bother me, but i'm a hack
personally i think just telling someone "le loomis" doesn't help much. on the level of telling someone to just "practice"
it's very disingenuous
probably following a character sheet could help them keep a consistent structure
and the art does look flat
it's super noticable on the last 3 panels
stuff like this doesn't normally bother me as long as characters have other defining features other than hair styles (strong jaw lines, big noses, etc.)
>>
>>94241305
what i feel that could be done about the flatness of the art is probably color
i don't think BW art should be used unless it compliments the art. here it just makes the art look unfinished. and not in a cute way you can get away with like sketchiness
>>
>>94240726
Did you see my post above? I have some additional corrections.
>>94236643

Add a comma or a colon after "And that's my job" in the second panel of >>94231804

>>94232480
Two corrections in this one. Add "I" after "As the sound engineer,". The last sentence should be "What did you SAY", not "said".

>>94234273
In the third panel, "aren't you" should be "don't you".
In the fourth panel, you misspelled "success".
In the fifth panel, it should be either "What did we even hire you for, you LEECH" or just "Why did we ever hire you, you LEECH".
In the last panel, it should be "This will be the last time I work with you." "This is the last time I'll work with you" is also acceptable. ("This will be the last time I'll work with you" isn't wrong, but it's a bit weaker than the previous two.)
>>
>>94240202
>personally i think just telling someone "le loomis" doesn't help much. on the level of telling someone to just "practice"
It's Lucy, he's barely on the same level as Bones. Giving him more thoughtful advice than Loomis is a waste of time, the dude's too lazy to improve, and will still act like he's the hottest shit either way

fuck off. It looks fine. I don't see where her facial structures change. It's a fucking comic man. A cartoon. There's no need to make them feel as if there's only one way to get good. I mean honestly sometimes you gotta kill your darlings. If you can make AxB WORK in the story, I mean really genuinely work, then do it. /co/ will hate me for saying this but sometimes you need those diversity brownie points to help boost your comic's popularity. If AxB seems forced or mediocre though, probably don't go for it.
>>
>>94246256
Can you show us a drawing right now? Maybe we can pinpoint areas in need of most work. A process of how you draw would be better.
IE, how about someone carrying something heavy?
>>
>>94232855
I think the easiest way to put it is coherency. Whether your character designs are super stylized and ridiculous or super low key and chill, your character designs should build to a singular point on who this character is. In cartoons this usually translates to "I can look at this character and instantly know what sort of person they are", but in more realistic works that sort of extreme stylization doesn't really fly.

In any case the big issue with OC-tier design is that it blandly copies the elements of more popular characters without understanding why those elements were there in the first place. More concerned with looking like a Kingdom Hearts character or a Steven Universe character than having a coherent design.
>>
>>94246256
Post a drawing flat out and we can pinpoint whether you should start with Keys to Drawing, Loomis, Draw a Box, or something else. If you were the kid who drew shitty anime nonstop from the age of 8 to 14, you can probably level up with just Loomis, but if you're absolute /beginner/ tier you may need something more basic, like Keys to Drawing.

You can (and should) still do drawabox though. The Lesson 1 and 2 exercises can basically be "warmup" exercises before you start your real work every day in order to gradually improve your lines and circles and perspective.
>>
>>94246256

>>94248375
There really is nothing wrong with having a character with idiosyncratic anatomy, if that's part of the fun or whatever.
I really, really think the problem here is how bad the rest of her anatomy is. She looks like her hands and head lost oxygen in the womb. I'm not saying you have to make her as realistically fat as a woman with breasts like that would be, but her little baby arms are so weird-looking and if she were to try to crush her own head between her thighs (say a clone), it wouldnt even hurt. it'd be like 'there is enough thigh squish here to fit my small head easily'
and said thighs appear bigger than her hips, which is another odd incongruity. She kind of looks like a pose doll. I mean shit she must have been a really easy birth, just sayin
>>
>>94248375

she's designed to be an uptight bitch with unrealistic anatomy, but then again, i'm not the best artist man, so yeah. Bad anatomy, but i'm feeling that i'm getting better as I pump out the art, so maybe one day i'll get there.

Also, she's based on a girl I dated. Granted her boobs weren't that big, but that girl was massive, yet slim. Never understood why she loved me though.

You're showing some promise here, but I can give you one tip right away that will improve all of these:
eyes closer together. you want one eye-width between the eyes. You also want to leave more forehead and cranium room, so you might try shrinking them slightly and moving them slightly down. I can photoedit this picture if you want and show you what I mean.
Obviously you have work to do in general, but this one little change will make you less of a target for shitcrit
>>
>>94248600
>btw, which one of you identified me on ic!? How the hell did you do that
That was me, your stuff is pretty distinct.
Here's my advice for you: grind fundies, human faces and figure drawing. Work on your line consistency, actually try to copy face styles from manga you enjoy.
You need to acquire a decent foundation for your art before you start focusing on more complex stuff like stylization. Put in the hours and mileage and you'll start to see improvement.

thanks dude. My biggest influence is actually burne hogarth and the manga battle angel alita. My favorite anime style is probably DEEN's higurashi adaption, so ill keep that in mind.

Its funny you mention the eyes, because before i heard they were too shrunked in, and then when i looked at one of the proportion guides, i interpreted eyes as being separated by the exact width of the mouth. okay, here i go to practice my fundieeeeeeeeeees

Ive not drawn in a year or so because I just gave up on it. Also because Im more concerned with getting a stable job and writing stuff like screenplays and general writefaggotry.

I just want to be able to draw so I can make detailed storyboards that arent stick figures. Not Ridley Scott-tier, because that mafacka went to art school. Obviously his storyboards are going to be beyond dope.
>>
>>94249922
Seems you have the basics covered. That is you at least have a stick figure with meat right there.

I'm more concerned about the actual details. You know, how you draw faces and all that. Again, to me looks like you at least know how anatomy works overall, if anything just a bit of polish but that comes with practice.
>>
>>94250309
im pretty much shit at everything but basic shapes.

I see fairly often that lots of people do a thing where they throw shapes together to make an interesting head-face, so maybe thats the secret.
>>
>>94250348
My personal advice would be to draw from life and check on how other artists you like draw. Really you aren't so shit, you just need a bit more of practice to nail details, at least from what you have shown in this drawing. Maybe some other anons may have other things to say though so bare with us.

So, I guess Ill skim through my pdfs I have and draw random garbage in my house, then move onto anatomy.

It's not as bad as you made it sound. This looks pretty good, it shows you understand that the human body has dimension to it. Small things that need to be worked on are understanding joints, evident by his right wrist, and how you drew the kneecaps/shoulders. Hands (but everyone has to practice on those), a little touch up on muscle (I actually just google Roman/Greek statues for that).
I think the biggest issue for you, is understanding gesture, a natural pose, and weight. While the proportions are not a glaring issue (leg on the rock - thigh needs to be longer, or foreshortening needs some work), the pose just doesn't make much sense. When I get up to test the post out, naturally, my forearm rests mid-thigh, and I'm of hunched over. For a straightened back, the left leg would also need to be straightened, to balance the weight.

Thanks for feedback, I will eventually find a way to improve the artwork, for now I just want to launch this thing before I decide to drop it again.

Loomis is a good but starts from tier 0 and I got bored reading, I prefer to watch videos and learn by practices and studying how architects work. The style is inconsistent since I rely heavily in symbolic identification more than accurate on model projection. I do this to avoid relying on one type of face and let me experiment. My main goal is to deliver a story rather than give good artwork. I shall experiment and add new things while I progress.

Finally decided to start on my comic after a while of planning. The main thing I'm having trouble with is coloring. I only colored the characters so far because im torn on how I want to color the background. Its supposed to be a music store. I finally figured out how to color my scanned comic boards though. So thats nice. Any thoughts?
>>
>>94260197

Ignore my typos and terrible dialogue
>>
>>94260197
The font is a bit hard to read, it's not the best choice when you have to make smaller sizes like in the second, third and fourth panel. Do you have any other you could use? And preferably all black and not white with black strokes?

>That awful font.
>No color.

>>
>>94260197
Coloring looks fine, I would just vary up the background in terms of shades of gray, to start with. after that you can colorize them however you want. I assume you wont put a ton of detail in
for god's sake though you could not have chosen worse text

I havent started on coloring the backgrounds yet. Still just a work in progress. Im trying to come up with color schemes for the music store setting. But yeah i agree with the font. I made the font forever ago. I just didnt wanna use some premade fonts.
>>
>>94260697
sometimes its hard to find a good font
>>
>>94260770
Well if you could, like, use this font on a black field, then invert the colors, it would look fine.. maybe.
>>
>>94260770
You should learn to panel and word-bubble properly before going into detail. You can make a comic with shit ass art and stick figures, but while it's readable and entertaining it will be appealing, yours isn't.
>>
>>94260697
It's faster than hand lettering
>>
>>94260803

I feel the tone of the speech would be... off? I mean i might as well find a better font.
>>
>>94260770
I don't want you to take this the wrong way or anything, just trying to give you constructive advice, but just from this first page, I'm already not interested. The writing is very, very cliched, and both characters, as I said read the same, which is always terrible. I also have a hard time believing that the "sassy", disheveled woman would ever wait around after the store was closed. Because having having worked in retail, once that clock hits 9:00, you lock the door, regardless of people are inside, and start closing or hardcore staring until they leave.

I'd do a bit of rework. Do you character sheets done? A story bible or anything?
>>
>>94260697
I'm conflicted as to what type I want. Classic comic fonts don't exactly appeal to me but maybe I'm just being skittish. (Not that my handwriting is much better anyway)
>>
>>94260941

I was never too great with dialogue. Still kinda learning tricks of the trade. I mean i planned it ahead already maybe about 9 pages in? These are the roughs. I have more but i dont want to just dump all of them. The rest are on my art blog anyhow.

She's still there kinda for a reason. Sorta on guard if that makes any sense. I should still rewrite her a lot though.
>>
>>94261434
>>
>>94261434
I'd rather read the sketch version than the digital version desu
>>
>>94260893
why would the tone of the speech be off with black letters on white, but not with these outlined-white-on-white ones?
>>
>>94261698

Oh shit no im retarded and read that wrong. I thought you meant inverting the foreground of the whole bubble itself along with the text.
>>
>>94261517
>>94261434
>>94261491
I agree, actually. Something about the sketching plus post it notes for dialogue is interesting.

And at any rate, you should really take a step back from the drawing and paneling, and work on developing the characters and overall plot of your story, instead of diving in and making it up along the way. In these first two rough pages, everything just kind of seems like a mess, plot/dialogue wise. A record store, where a retail employee is not chomping at the bit to get out of there, lets some dude loiter around after the store has closed. Plausible, but rarely happens. Not only that, she has this weird dialogue in the 4th panel; why does she care so much about why this guy is here? 5th panel, it's even worse; the whole "are you a cop" is out of place, unless they are doing illegal things 24/7 here. Also, the dialogue in the rough pages is better than the finished page.

I hope this helps man!
>>
>>94262119

I get what all of you are saying and its super helpful! But uhh... the whole point of her staying is cuz shes making sure nobody interrupts the whole pirate radio station thing going on downstairs while it finishes up. I guess im just confused if im supposed to info dump everything in one page so fast?

REGARDLESS i do have a better idea how to write that part in so i'm glad i have a better visual on what's the most confusing parts. Thanks!
>>
>>94262119

However... what exactly is it about the roughs with the postits that make it better? I mean i'm not great at inking i suppose.

>>
>>94262610
Don't spill the beans jjust make their situation more believable - their interaction comes off as stiff and the questions she's asking come from nowhere. A store employee talking to an unknown customer who's staying past closing would be rushing to get him out but blurt out are you a cop and all that
>>
>>94262610
See, a pirate radio station is a cool idea, but because of that first page, I don't think I would have personally stuck around to see what was going on (based on your finished page). But the dialogue on the rough page flows better, seems more like an actual conversation people would have. It's not as much as an info dump as bread crumbs, y'know? The first page should always look to get people into the second, etc.

And with the roughs with post-its just kinda have a neat aesthetic to it.
>>
>>94262821
it's shit
>>
>>94261806
Well sort of, the idea is that if you filled your current bubbles in with black, then it would connect with the black outlines.. and you'd have white on black
then invert that and you'd have black on white like a normal person

Badass. I just have a few notes:
His hair must be pretty stiff if it's staying around his face even while rushing forward. How do the sides work? Good stuff to keep in mind for windblowing
his left hand and both his feet are at a fist-on and profile angle respectively, even though his body is partially forward. You might not know how to draw those things at that angle yet, but this is a good time to practice! Basically in this page, Sarah changes and jack explains how him winning the tournament has been inspiring Sarah to be a little bit more happy and less gothic, and smaller things like inspiring people to wear jackets and copy his fighting style.

And page 2, in gif form. I want LotH to be a little more internety and experimental and freeform, and have Saffron be the more "standard" comic with preplanned arcs and the like.

Not sure how it's possible for Sora to have pigtails with that parasite on her head, but that's adorable.
That 'sailor hat' looks like a Slappy Squirrel hat. Shouldn't it be something like Gilligan wore?

... okay but.. what should I bookmark? I see no main-page for the comic that just automatically takes you to the latest page.
>>
>>94276327

I've had the entire goddamn site built before I discovered Genesis won't let me put in a "Latest Comic" link. Right now you have to use

http://saffroncomic.com/chapter/legend-of-the-hare/

Which super sucks and I'm trying to find a better solution.

(Of course, you could always sub to my patreon and just get it emailed to you hue hue)

Not that anon but I have been following your comics for a while and was wondering how to go directly to the latest pages, is a similar url for saffron?
>>
>>94277154

http://saffroncomic.com/chapter/saffron/

You can also bookmark

http://saffroncomic.com/?latest

But the problem with that link is that it shows the latest comic uploaded, be it Comicide, Saffron, or LotH.

Normally I could use http://saffroncomic.com/?latest=chapter=saffron to link to the latest Saffron specifically, but it seems like this structure is incompatible with the Genesis theme I'm using, according to Frumph.

If anyone has a solution, though, I'd greatly appreciate it.
>>
>>94276855
Genesis? as in ComicGenesis? Yeah it doesn't have a latest-comic page, but it has a latest-comic tag.. so you put it on a given page, and link to that page. Such as the front page.
In any case, this link you've given me here works, even if it is a little weird having it go in backwards order on this page. It'll do! Thanks.
>>
>>94277278

Genesis like the Wordpress theme called Genesis, using ComicEasel to give it comic functionality, but trying to have three comics on one site in ComicEasel is starting to break the plugin.

Comic - Failed Comeback.png
1MB, 2000x3100px
Hey /hyw/, I've posted here around a month and a half ago spilling out how I'm really dissatisfied with my level of productivity this summer. While I have all the free time I want to before my new semester starts to work on art and comics, I'm spending it on sleeping and lazing and vidya instead. The usual result of depression, I'm trying to sort it out, it's not what I'm posting about today.

What is really eating at me lately is trying to come up with a solid coherent premise and story for a real webcomic. Basically I'm completely overwhelmed every time I try to think of something because I realize that there are limitless possibilities and my mind goes to all the things to consider besides the art that are within the story, such as narration, location, tone, motifs, pacing, unique believable characters, jokes, camera angles, creating what I truly want vs. what is marketable, use of reality vs. non-reality, order of events, and more shit along those lines. I know I could just simply jump right into something and do whatever I want but I'm scared to make that first step, especially when I'm going back to university in a month.

Anyway here's a comic I made last week, and in the post I said I would try to make another one for today but I ain't even started the sketch. I want so hard to just do it but I'm a lazy self-hating bastard.
>>
>>94279567
you made a comic like this and you're surprised? of course we want a hugging arm
also I have no fucking idea what happened, he hibernated and turned brown and got bigger? was that a timeskip?
>>
>>94280329

>Thanks for the help everyone, you guys, under the guise of being dick to eachother are actually a great bunch of peeps.

>>
>>94278441
>which is not free, it cost 5400JPY (Include sales tax) per 1 software license.

Oh shit I have been lied
>>
>>94280643
Also, another issue I didn't point out is that I'm also just as overwhelmed by and scared of the possibility of no one liking my work, no one even seeing my work, or both. I think that is the toxic extrinsic mindset right there that spawns all of the overthinking I listed in my last post. All I have to do is not give a shit, do the kind of art and comics that makes me happy, and THEN after some people actually notice it and like it is when I can consider the deeper stuff more.

But this all still depends on whether I will actually take my own advice or not and stop being the way I've been. I'm not quitting yet. And you shouldn't either, anon.
>>
I'm having a problem keeping up with my drawing. With Japanese, I have Duolingo and anki notifying me and giving me tangible goals for day, but with drawing, I feel like I spend more time trying to figure out what I want to draw and then just defaulting to exercises half the time.

So, is there maybe a program or website or a phone app that gives you a drawing goal or challenge every day and keeps annoying you until you complete it?
>>
>>94281381
I say write down your inspiration when you have it, surely once in a while you do.. then you'll build up a list of stuff you feel like drawing

im going through drawing books so i can learn to get good first but god damn is it rough, i just want to draw weird fantasy creatures not boring humans. that is assuming i don't get burnt out like i have with everything else in my life, im barely enjoying drawing as is.
>>
>>94281964
Yeesh, I know how that goes. It's really weird. I'm just never in the mood to draw and I barely enjoy it when I'm doing it, but I just feel such an intense yearning and regret whenever I think about how I could and should learn how to draw.

CF is autistic and refuses to improve but he ain't that annoying.

>>
>>94282385
It's mostly because the progress is so slow and I can see so many other way better artists. Especially since it's not like other skills when there are tangible goals and results, like the first book you read when you're learning a new language. It's a very discouraging process and the whole time, I'm just angry that my hand isn't making what my brain wants.
>>
>>94282385
I personally dislike CF because his comic has been going on for like 9 years but page 1 looks exactly the same as page #12309 in terms of quality
>>
>>94282495
You have the wrong mentality.
You'll never get any better unless you try and tackle those problem areas that you're having, or 'where your hand won't make what your brain wants'. That's why critique and feedback is a huge part of becoming a better artist.
Keep at it, my man. Maybe try to structure out your learning if you want to see tangible goals.

Just my shark autism though, while it is sometimes true that the pectoral fins have their own island of the upper-body color, the gill slits are definitely always ahead of them. In fact, the rearmost gill slit often runs right into the front edge of the fin. That's why sharkmen often have gill slits on their trapezius

>>
>>94283010
>>94283089
This, when you have tickets the line is irrelevant. As it is, who has ever heard of a line to the movies? The number of people for whom there are seats.. show up.. and get in the seats. There's a line for TICKETS, yeah.. but unless it was oversold, there can't be a line for people with tickets
