How To Train Your Dragon is pretty big in Germany. The tie-in show aired completly on television, it flew under the radar when it only aired on CN but it instantly became a successfull smash hit once it hit Super RTL (which is a free channel). Shit is so successfull, it has it's own section in a huge German amusment park. Not just a roller coaster ride but a whole subsection. In fact, the show was so big it made Nickelodeon air thier Dreamworks IP's as well.

However, despite the success Super RTL never actually milked the show or other Dreamworks IPs to death, it still isn't immune to the usual channel practice. They still get rotated out and they still won't get more than an hour of airing time daily and half of that is repeating the episode aired yesterday.

Not a big shock that the Kung Fu Panda movies were huge in China. But they were apparently so big, that higher ups in China started to question why is America making better Chinese films than China? That eventually led to Dreamworks opening up Dreamworks Oriental as well as China trying to improve their CG film output with stuff like Rock Dog, Monkey King, and Little Door Gods.

It's actually amazingly rare for a protagonist in a anime or manga to be full blood foreigner, it's either half-Japanese or just Japanese but grew up somewhere else. Japan has a really limited idea of what the rest of the world is like. They learned much from America Senpai.
>>

>half-Japanese

Not often. Haffus are universally frowned upon by the Japanese. Most characters in shows who aren't full-blooded Japanese are awkwardly and deliberately said to be three-quarters Japanese, because then they can't be called haffus.

The Japanese really, really, really don't like haffus.

Fun fact: Johnny Bravo is so popular in India that it actually became slang there. The use the term "Johnny Bravo" to describe someone or something that carries traits, or is reminiscent of the titular character.
Example:
"How did his date go last night?"
"He Johnny Bravo-ed it."

>>

Culturally, they have very strong feelings about genetic purity. Haffus aren't allowed to hold higher positions in businesses.

Look up Ariana Miyamoto sometime. She was the 2016 Miss Universe winner and she represented Japan. She was a haffu, though, and it became a national scandal in Japan, with people insisting she should be disqualified because she wasn't 100% true Japanese.

The Japanese wanted to disqualify their own representative who had won because they were ashamed she wasn't pure. They are VERY serious about haffus over there.

It's actually better to be a full-on gaijin in Japan than a haffu. Gaijins they ignore, but haffus they openly despise and discriminate against. Theyre basically second class citizens.

Brazilian-Japanese get a kinda weird pass simply because there's a huge Japanese population in Brazil and so they get a lot of Brazilians in Japan. One of their most beloved soccer players, Ramos, was a half Jap half Brazilian.

Asian countries don't care about the west's obsession with race. And the concept of identity politics is alien to them.

Racism and extreme nationalism.

Most weeboos don't want to know how fucked up WWII Japan really was toward other races.

They hate other races so much, their invasion of the Philippines was called the rape of the Philippines.
When their military's food supply was cut off, they ate captured soldiers.
They treated captured soldiers like shit because they saw it as 100% wrong they did not commit suicide or die trying to win.
They performed horrifying experiments on Chinese citizens, especially women, in captured parts of China. Deadly chemicals etc. They infected them with STDs just to see what they would do untreated. Even raped them and then killed their babies.

Yeah, except most Japanese insist none of that stuff ever happened and is just propaganda made up by foreigners to dishonor them.

The Rape of Nanking, the novel, was banned in Japan for decades in order to allow time for "rebuttal" novels to be published to preemptively discredit it before release.

No actual Japanese person believes any of their war crimes ever happened.

Hungarians love the fuck out of Family Guy. Apparently it's the most watched thing on Netflix, and the dubbing is considered a national treasure. They always keep putting out behind the scenes videos of the dub and interviews with the voice actors.
Merely suggesting that the show has any faults can get you a lot of hate. I've experienced it.

Also, I guess some old Hanna-Barbera shows are still popular too because they still keep showing a handful of them. The Flintstones is legendary thanks to the redone rhyming dialogue. The Smurfs cartoon is huge too, they dubbed a bunch of episodes that were omitted for decades just recently.

Funny, since they actually committed non-lethal genocide on the Ainu up through 2007. It was illegal for two Ainu to marry and have kids in Japan, all Ainu were required to marry Japanese so as too slowly breed the Ainu out of existence. The law wasn't repealed until 2007 when it was determined that no full-blooded Ainu exist in Japan anymore.

Just a sobering reminder that if you cannot speak fluid Japanese, you are incapable of determining if the Japanese version is better or not. All you're hearing is gibberish with no linguistic ability to tell good acting from bad acting.

Poser.
>>
>>94220927
I said there are virtually no cases, which means there may be some cases. But those would be cases like porn movies getting a joke dub.

>>94220948
It's not necessary to be fluent in Japanese, and the problem here is this notion that both the original and the dub are equal and it's only a matter of determining which is better. But it doesn't work that way. The original is the original, the dub is the dub. The original has value by virtue of being the original.

You are also just assuming I don't know any Japanese, which is just projection. I've also never seen anyone cite bad Japanaese voice acting in anime, it's just assumed that it must be bad and nobody can prove otherwise.
>>
>>94220986

Just a sobering reminder that with rare exceptions like Ghibli films, all Japanese originals are dubs because they produce the animation first and then have the actors overlay the dialogue onto it.
>>
>>94213517

>>
>>94213193
>>94213256
>>94221034

The original origin for Ken was that his Dad was American and his mom was Japanese, making him a haffu.

There was backlash in recent years due to all the anti-haffu controversy, so Capcom changed it. His dad was half-Japanese and his mother was full Japanese, thus making Ken 3/4 Japanese and therefor more acceptable to Japanese society.
>>
>>94221032
They are not equivalent to foreign language dubs just because they are the same thing on a technical level. Are you seriously trying to use this as an argument?

>>94220986
>It's not necessary to be fluent in Japanese

Oh I agree.

>You are also just assuming I don't know any Japanese

I'm not, but I do know Japanese and while almost all Nip dubs (yes, the original anime has voices DUBBED in) are superior and more true to the director's original vision, there are times where some other language improves on some particular lameness of the source material and just works.

> I've also never seen anyone cite bad Japanaese voice acting in anime, it's just assumed that it must be bad and nobody can prove otherwise.

If you're talking about the whole "well, Japanese acting would also sound stupid to you if you knew Japanese" thing, then yeah I agree this is stupid and should just die as it isn't true. But while genuinely bad acting from the Japs is much rarer than it is in English dubbing, there are a fair share of generic or flat out annoying castings that are far from the best the nation of anime has to offer.
>>
>>94220855
Bobobo
>>
>>94221124
The Japanese voice actors are selected by the production team and their performances are guided by the sound director, the director, and the writer. They are reading from the original Japanese script, in Japanese. A foreign dub is not equivalent to this. I hope you are just pretending to be this dumb.

Also, it's standard in anime that the actors perform together, not individually.

German Conan dub easily beats the Japanese original, everything just feels incredibly realistic. The guy in charge of voicing Conan/Shinichi is able to voice both characters perfectly, the other vocieactors also deliver an impressive job in making a good product. They nail every single little detail like making realistic, not overblown accetns or actually speaking English when they are supposed to do it.
It is the pinnacle of vocieacting and dubbing.
>>
>>94221248
It's a dub, not the original. Unless there is something seriously wrong with the original, the German dub cannot be better.

Japan is intensely xenophobic to a hilarious degree. Solid Snake is a white dude but it's made very clear that during his cloning process he received the mitochondrial DNA of a Japanese woman so as to avoid alienating the nips who play the game.

That's odd that 1/4 Japanese is seen as more acceptable than being half, christ what a clusterfuck of a country. 100 hour work weeks with the lowest productivity in the world, suicide epidemic, plummeting birth rate and the most garbage taste in waifus on the planet.

Your own post is an example of extreme xenophobia. Which you pretend is unique to the Japanese.

Only 63% of the U.S is non-hispanic white, with that number declining every year since hispanic and black birth rates are much higher. Yeah, probably. Another anon already mentioned the Street Fighter retcon where Capcom changed Ken from a haffu to 3/4.

But non-anime wise, the recent Shin Godzilla movie features a Japanese woman who is very specifically said to be 3/4 Japanese on film because the audience HAS TO KNOW that she's not a haffu. It's really that important to them.

A lot of it is attached to the name stigma and the distance between you and the "impurity".

If you are half Japanese, then you are a haffu and "everyone knows" that haffus are bad. But it's also that it means you are the direct result of a Japanese person committing race betrayal by marrying/sleeping with a foreigner.

When you're 1/4 or 3/4 Japanese, you can't be called a haffu, so you don't get stigmatized with the name, but it also means you aren't the DIRECT outcome of something considered culturally dishonorable, so they give you more slack.

Fire Nation is Ming dynasty China with some Japanese influences. Earth Kingdom is mostly China and Korea with some India and South Asia blended in. The most Japanese place in Avatar is actually Kyoshi Island.

There's an actual reason why anime dubbing is so bad in the US.

Prelay work, when the dialogue is recorded first and the animation is then set to the recording, is considered a creative work and therefor the voice actors receive residuals.

Overlay work, where the animation is produced first and the dialogue is matched to it, is not considered a creative work so there are no residuals.

The best actors all horde the prelay work for themselves, because the overlay work is beneath them since it doesn't pay as much upfront or anything on the backend. Overlay is the scraps and goes primarily to the non-union VAs in Texas and New York. It's a case of "you get what you pay for", voice actors who work for the bottom dollar and aren't good enough to get prelay gigs.

To add to that, adult-oriented animated shows in general are very popular, the crasser the better. Not sure how well this reflects reality, but judging by what I see online, even stuff like Brickleberry is seen as one of the best in the field.
When they imported King of the Hill, they packed it full of obscene language to offset its down to earth humor and make it feel more "international". >even though the Simpsons as a whole isn't big there

Eh, it still gets broadcast over there in sub-only format, so it gets enough viewers to have aired uninterrupted since the beginning (though the dub stopped at season 12).

The Japanese Simpsons fanbase was large enough to demand that The Simpsons Movie receive a second dub for the DVD release, using the cast from the TV series (the theatrical release used celebrity actors and the Japanese fans didn't like it). It wasn't that. He was pissed because the propaganda department in charge of it kept hamstringing production.

>The Panda had to be the main character
>He couldn't be overweight even though pandas are naturally fat
>He had to be the best at anything he did instantly because portraying him as weak or needing help was wrong somehow
>Everyone had to like him
>Nothing could be challenging.

Basically the writers and animators wanted to make a character. The government wanted a Mary Sue.

Americans tend to localize. Infernal Affairs became The Departed, whatever Ugly Betty was became Ugly Betty, basically every popular primetime game show was stolen from Britain. My understanding is that it's a folk tale, so the details get changed a lot, but it's true that Disney's version toned it down a lot. Keep in mind, when an "uproar" occurs, its not like the entire country is getting involved. Most of those who do are just sensitive assholes, and depending on their positions in life, they can make it look like there's a lot more noise than there actually is.

This is true here in the US too. We just don't see it as often because we export way more media than we import (seriously, our media imports are pretty much restricted to Japan and Britain).

Once you get to 3/4 any nationality, most people just find the 1/4 to be an interesting extra rather than actually important.

For some reason most of the hate for '14 was about Godzilla not showing up much even though that's how the original films worked before they went nuts with monster fights, even though from a critical standpoint the worst thing was the main character's writing (personally I just didn't like the way they forced him into every monster event using coincidences, I was fine with him being a normal soldier).
'98 was a monster movie about a large dinosaur that is largely hated for barely resembling Godzilla and having horrible 'humorous' writing, and people who like bad movies for being bad find it fun.
There's a pretty big overlap between people who want monster fighting/action and don't care about Godzilla being accurate (i.e. unironic '98 fans) and people who are disappointed by a lack of it and won't care about the story about people affected by a giant disaster (i.e. people who didn't like how '14 handled it).

The funny thing is that the biggest haters of Robotech are Macross fans when that was the show with the least changes to plot. Although they'd probably be more ambivalent if a real estate company wasn't cockblocking the release of Zero, Frontier, and Delta in the states.

Donald Duck comics are fucking massive in Finland, especially those made by Don Rosa and Carl Barks. Funny thing about Don Rosa — not even his neighbors knew what exactly he did for his job. (the only comics anyone cares about in the US is DC/Marvel so saying "I'm a comic book artist" would get the funnymen asking about which company he works for)

Finland however? We are his biggest fans. So big in fact, that he did a story based around our national epic out of gratitude for us. Great guy indeed.

Basically these, the movie had enough problems of its own so it's no wonder it gets so much hate regardless of how it compares to other crap in the franchise. Reminder that it didn't do that well even in Japan.
Godzillafags who get perplexed that anyone likes G98 better need to realize that not everyone gives a damn about respect for source material and similar shit. These movies are a good example of this. For example several countries in Europe either don't care for the original films or outright hate them, so they welcomed how different the 98 movie was, and that helped them look past some of its faults. In contrast, they loved contemporary American blockbuster movies like the Jurassic Park films, so they liked that G98 took cues from those instead of the previous Godzilla films.
The 14 one was not only shallow, badly written and plain dull, but a lot of people hated that it took itself so seriously. And I even talked to guys who were disappointed that it was more faithful to the Japanese films because they hated them so much.
>>
Why is it that Japs love non-jap culture so much when they dislike everything that's not Japan?

Seriously, they make the best fanart out there. From Mass Effect art to Superhero crap, it's great.

Not only that, but they take so much inspiration from western culture(just look at older anime, it's chock-full of western movies/tv shows references. The Dirty Pair had a calendar and the June month was a reference to The Graduate, for fuck's sake.)

How is it possible they despise non-Japs and yet love them so much? This level of hypocrisy should have snapped the universe in two by now.

The Japanese like the idea of Western media and culture, they just don't want to see it in their own country. There's a thing called Paris Syndrome that's unique to the Japanese. basically, they spend their whole lives creating this concept in their mind of what the outside world is like, but when they actually travel abroad and see that it isn't like how they imagined, it causes them serious psychological stress. It's a real thing and it almost exclusively affects Japanese people because they have to little experience with other cultures and people.
