It's a fairly recent tradition that I think started two years ago, IIRC.

I can't remember if there was ever a specific reason it was started, just suddenly someone did the Unholy Trinity of Millar Comics (Unfunnies, Trouble and Nemesis), then someone responded with Marville and Girls, and it just became a thing from there. Then someone made a thread with a "I Survived the SDCC Storytime of Pain 2015" and I remember people deciding it should be a yearly tradition.

Comic-con is probably the biggest shitposting time of the year with how many crossboarders we get, so I'd imagine that may have been the impetus. I do remember it being particularly bad that weekend, literally completely unable to discuss comics at all.

Also I can't remember for sure if it was 2015 or 16 where it started, it would make sense if it was 16 because BvS had just come out and shitposting was at the all-time high.

Nah, I think it's a great little tradition. SOPs are really fun and paradoxically bring people together a lot more than regular storytimes.
