For whatever reason, I think people give more leeway if the older person is some sort of fantastical creature. There was the adult gnomes who wanted to marry Mabel from Gravity Falls, and an adult Pixie who actually did marry (and kiss) one of Marco's friends in Star vs the Forces of Evil. I don't think either of these things would have been allowed to happen if they were normal human adults.

Well... the show basically portrays Beetlejuice as a...sort of imaginary friend turned real compared to the horrifically perverse ghost in the original movie. He's there for Lydia in other ways than romance, typically as a confidant and magical buddy to help her with her problems, and yet and there's also an inverse in that she constantly bails him out of trouble too.

Also, he's a ghost.

I'm not sure if age /norms apply here with that in mind (even if he was shown to be at least out of high-school regarding his age,) but both he and Lydia are outsiders in their respective worlds and rely on each other as friends more than something else. The show never went too far past a platonic relationship even if BJ's loyalty to her was more than that; Lydia either isn't ready for romance or doesn't want to go there yet and say what you will about Cartoon Beetlejuice he doesn't cross THAT line.

Earlier drafts of the film's screenplay had it where Betelgeuse's original form was some Arab guy. He spent a lot of time creeping on Lydia's younger sister who was ultimately cut from the script.

Personal thoughts on the matter; despite initial appearances Wednesday is actually only about a year younger than Lydia(13 and 14 respectively), Wednesday just happens to be a very late bloomer physically(and Lydia was an early bloomer in comparison), within the next year or two puberty is going to hit her like the proverbial brick wall(in a good way)

Also Lydia is very distantly related to the extended Addams clan, and just happens to be the first person in her family to express Addams traits(both physically and mentally) in about a century

So here's what actually happened.

Discord was released from imprisonment on the condition that he stop fucking with people, and put into the custody of the mane 6 so they can stone his ass any time they want.

Fluttershy was the ONLY one who showed any faith in Discord, and believed in him right up until the point where she was proven wrong, and that he actually was still being a cruel asshole.

Discord, until this point, didn't even know he HAD a friend, much less that he had betrayed and disappointed them like that. That's what made him change. He literally learned what friendship was in that one moment when he lost it. Discord saw the light entirely on his own.

Discord doesn't actually want to lose his friends. He LIKES having friends. And he knows that since he already hurt her once, he's walking on eggshells with Fluttershy, that's why she gets treated differently. And Twilight is by far more fun to mess with.

How old is Lydia meant to be actually? In the movie I had always assumed she was around 17/18 since that's still school age but now that I'm an adult watching it I understand more why the ladyghost (don't ask me to be good with names) kept calling her "little girl." She looks more 14-16.

The defense I can give to Beetlejuice is that it's possible he died in a time period where dating minors was generally more accepted (in a lot of cultures, girls were usually married off early anywhere between 12 and 18 years old, any older and it was considered a problem and a burden to the family).

If he's old enough of a ghost, which also explains why he just gives absolutely no fucks about anything since he's existed too long to give a shit, that might be why he personally has no problem with it.


As a kid I always thought there was some ambiguity since a ghost is probably going to be older than you whether they died as a kid or an adult, so I freely fantasized about older ghost men whisking me away on ghost adventures.

It's cute though. Comparing it to the movie version though and it's very weird. Maybe the sequel, if it ever gets made, will explore this with the now adult Wynona?

Alright, this is a topic I've actually looked really hard into, because I fucking love Beetlejuice

First off - Originally, If a ghost left it's haunting ground in the physical world, they would fall into void where the fabric of reality was being trimmed. However, this confused audiences, so Sandworms were introduced as a threat against the Maitlands to keep them in their home. However, Sandworms were always intended to be the film, and they're just an other worldly species that enjoys eating spectres; more on that later.

As for Saturn, it's not actually Saturn; it takes place on Saturn's moon, Titan. Betelgeuse just refers to it as Saturn. As well, it's implied that it's technically not the actual Titan, like if we drove a Space Shuttle there we wouldn't see sand worms, it's another ghost realm that just happens to be on Titan. Why? Because Tim Burton is weird. It's never really explained in the movie proper. Though, in the Cartoon Series, it's not even Titan, it's just a different place entirely, but the movie script calls it Titan.

The afterlife is a mess; If you commit suicide, your punishment is to be a civil servant in the afterlife until your debt is paid off. Now look at the waiting room - People who died in accidents. They are trying to determine whether the accident is the fault of the individual or the fault of an outside party. If it's not your fault, and your spirit doesn't harbor excessive emotional energy, you pass on. The Maitlands were forced to haunt their home because of this and their attachment to it. That's why you don't see any natural caused deaths in the movie, they were quickly processed into mainstay of the after life. You can also die in the after life, but it just brings you back to stage one, like Betelgeuse being eaten.

There's also other weird rules, like the ghost wedding making you corporeal and what not, but nothing is ever explained well; purposely by Burton I'm assuming.

As someone who is a die-hard Beetlejuice fan and has had an interview with Tim Burton. The gears were supposed to represent the movement of time outside of the ghost's reality. Since for a dead person, time is frozen after they died. Since that whole concept is hard to explain with random gears, it was scrapped.

The Beetlejuice suicide is not fully true. BJ was supposed to be represented by an eastern European man who looked ugly. BJ was stalking the woman and killed her after she rejected his love. Hence the finger in the ring. A lot of Tim's ideas were considered too dark for the comedy movie and were removed.

Well it makes sense to advertise the movie to people who watch the show. The problem is that the advertising/merchandise was geared towards girls while the tone of the movie itself was geared towards older men.
