The sentiment of this panel isn't that bad, sometimes you see people in a fun fling and you desire the romance of the situation, even if you aren't attracted to the people involved. The way it was written was pretty lame of course, and makes me question whether the artist and the writer ever talk to each other. The panels and dialogue in that whole issue were a mess. I think a couple of smaller panels with mini-reflections on the previous moments (show don't, repeat in this case) would have been good and maybe broken up the giant bubble of text some. Or just an editor with a sharp pen on hand. Which my replies to thread on /co/ could really use. We all need a decent editor.

I think what fascinates me is that I can see exactly what Rivera is trying to do.

You've obviously got the inclusion aspect, where sexual identity and race are given the most focus, where demonstration of these immutable factors is somehow given the most precedence and glory, because historically expressing it has punished and oppressed, and of course, retaliation against those that are historically endemic of said persecution.

Then on the plot scale, of course, there's obviously a hindsight wish fulfillment thing going on of wishing you could ease past-you's strife. A noble goal in its own right, but very paperthin and blunt.

And then on a deeper level there's that hint-of-narcissism of trying to be deep. All that narration with metaphors that go nowhere and are contradictory and don't mean a fucking thing because they're so vaguely inclined. They're never given a proper force in the narrative because they're half-baked and stuffed everywhere. This is the attempt of someone who wants so desperately to be a voice of their generation, without knowing what they want to say or at least how to say it. All this, of course, channeled through the mind of the protagonist who is so thin in anything resembling a rational human being that every sentence comes off as the rambling of a methhead.

And you dilute all of that down through someone who's never written a comic before, doesn't understand what nuance or subtlety looks like, and doesn't consider the combination of all these elements would ultimately create: a tonally dissonant, muddled product that seems to only be intent on selling itself as the message, without bothering to elaborate on what it is.

Some fucking Junot Diaz wannabe who's had PoC-tinted goggles on for so long that nothing can be ordinary/innocuous. Everything is either amazing or horrible, empowering or oppressing. She's trying so hard to make a story that's progressive that she's ignored making it good. Because in her mind progressive=good by proxy.

I live in the south so most homosexuals I meet are pretty awesome. The men are educated and articulate and the women are non-pretentious and hardworking. So, the opposite of what southerners of those genders usually are. It's refreshing.
