>Jim was in the middle of negotiating with Disney in 1990 while we were shooting “Muppet Vision 3D”. We all saw the toll the dealmaking process was taking on him, but as always he pushed on excited about the 3D technology and his new project. He expressed his concern that he hoped he wasn’t making a mistake because of how difficult the negotiations had become. He was entrusting something to Disney that he cared about, and the trust was being eroded by the business process.

>It was Jim’s desire that Disney use his chosen performers to continue with the characters, and I was witness to a comment from an executive who chided Jim to his face, saying ‘That’s not how we do business. If Mickey-1 won’t do it for what we offer, then we move on to Mickey-2, and keep going down the line until somebody will do it for our price…’. Jim looked horrified.

>During the negotiation of the deal on “MuppetVision 3-D”, our first deal with Disney, two of us, did not close our deals before the shooting began. On the first day of production with Jim directing his first Disney project, a group of three studio attorneys marched into the sound stage, interrupted production, and demanded that the two of us sign our contracts immediately.

>Imagine standing in a line, three “suits”, Jim Henson, and behind him me and the other performer who didn’t sign. What do you think Jim did next?

Did he:

A) Tell me that my “business conduct was unacceptable”?
B) Accuse me of “brinkmanship”?
C) Fire me without an ultimatum for holding up his production?

>The answer is none of the above. With two of us standing in his shadow, gentle, soft spoken Jim Henson looked the attorneys square in the eyes and slowly, quietly told them to get off his set and never come back.

>As we watched them go I said to him, “Jim, I’m so sorry to have caused a problem, especially on your first day shooting with Disney…”. Jim put his hand on my shoulder and said, “I would NEVER want you to sign a deal you’re not comfortable with”.

I miss him so much..

Steve also responds to Cheryl Henson's facebook reaction that went viral recently.

>I love Jim as a friend and mentor, while Cheryl loves him as a father. Don’t judge her emotional posts too harshly. I hope all of you and Cheryl, too, can understand that being outspoken about these very character issues to the top creative executives on the ABC series is at the core of the number one issue stated to me for my termination by The Muppets Studios.

>is Steve seriously the spotless good guy in this

He ended up inheriting Jim's role defending the characters because Jim's kids had no interest whatsoever in doing so, but had none of the authority behind that role, and was seen as a nuisance.

He unwisely hired his wife as his manager, and refused to train an understudy which meant until he was relieved of duty if you wanted Kermit you had to go to Steve.

Jim's company and legacy should have gone to the performers and technicians who helped build it, not the brats he felt guilty about abandoning all those years. The performers and technicians had a crystal clear understanding of the property's actual value, whereas the kids on the sideline never could. Their collective inability to light a fart that didn't have their dad's signature on it says as much.

I was a background puppeteer for one of the 2000's episodes of Sesame Street, played Herry Monster, it was a huge crowd scene. Steve was in the for-front as Ernie, next to Kevin Clash, Eric Jacobson, Jerry Nelson, and Fran Brill, David Rudman and Carmen forgive me, I forget Carmen's last name.

I was behind the piano with Tyler Bunch, Martin Robinson, Stephanie D, and I forget who was Grover. I even forget who was little Chrissy. The gang were singing the ABCs with Patti Labelle. Steve noticed the way I was preforming Herry, and came over mid break and gave me some pointers. It's not just a sack of fur over my hand. He told me to add more pep to Herry's step, so Herry and Grover rock out when the music went gospel.

I was also one of the background preformers playing a chicken when the Muppets preformed the Weight on Jimmy Kimel. Steve told me a wonderful story that Jim filled his office desk with chicken feathers back in 79 in the Muppet headquarters. Steve also told me how hard the chickens were cause they don't have arms like normal muppets and you use two fingers to control the beak.

Keep up the fight anon. As a fan of Muppets since before, I could speak, I'm glad to hear these stories. Jim Henson is a personal hero of mine, not just for the Muppets, but for the way he lived and treated people.
I work in the arts myself and my number one frustration is execs who don't understand what heart is.
The performer is the difference between Kermit the Frog, and a green sock.

>>93994148
Does it bother you that a lot of news outlets just treat it as a easy thing to do? "Oh it's just some voice actor, anyone can do a Kermit impression. You can just up and replace him with another voice actor right?"

I personally blame Disney for this current day misconception about what goes into puppetry, Jim was all about showing off how Kermit work and appreciating the hard work his friends put into it by appearing next to Richard Hunt at the Oscars or taking everyone from the Muppets to a Late Night show.

Ever since The Muppets (2011) happened Disney put a stop to that, they would stuff Steve, Bill Barretta and the others in sofas on Ellen DeGeneres, Colbert etc instead of having a conversation eye-to-eye with the guy playing Kermit or Fozzie.
>>
>>93994454
Yeah, it fucking pisses me off to no end. When I took over for Herry Monster, not even as a speaking roll, just a pair of arms to fill the puppet, I was nervous as shit. Jerry Nelson gave Herry so much personality and life, it's big shoes to fill.

And about talk shows, yeah, I agree, I've heard horror stories of being in those couches.

>>93995228

Disney didn't really ruin Star Wars though, I mean the prequels were still worse than anything the mouse can shit out
>>
>>93997080
They ruined the tv show, which was the best thing that came out of the prequels.
>>
>>93997080
debatable. The prequels were bad, but at least they stayed true to the spirit of the originals. They didn't exist to push SJW propaganda
>>
>>93996636
they ruined disney itself. if Walt Rose from his grave today, he would barely recognize the company he left behind.

according to the Muppet wiki, these were the rest of the performers in that scene

>Alice Dinnean

does that help to jog any memories of who played who?
>>

I don't remember Alice there, I know Joey was. Noel I think was puppeteering Chrissy.

that's how they used to handle voice actors, they don't anymore.

at the time Disney had 0 cartoons with Mickey., Donald, or Goofy, the guys that were doing the voices only did commercials and toys. So they had 3 or 4 that would do voices for various things, this way they could pay them less.

in 1988 they finally made some real casting decisions and had 3 voice actors chosen to be the voices for life because they were finally going to be making cartoons again starting with Ducktales.

However now that they've gotten rid of Kermit it would be a good time for them to also get rid of Tony Anselmo, anything that Steve Whitmire did I guarantee Tony did 100x worse.

Not only did Tony steal over $100k from the Disney vault but he's also "difficult" he constantly complains about the dialog he's given because he's such a shitty voice actor he can't actually perform the lines.

They already have a new Donald Duck lined up to take over, Daniel Ross, so I don't see any real reason to not get rid of his ass.

Puppeteers =/= Voice actors.

Still doesn't change that puppeteers =/= voice actors.
Voice actors record in a booth. Puppeteers force their acting through their arm and hand.
>>
>>93999289
irrelevant

>>93996644

>>
>>93999316
You don't get it. Puppeteers are there from the moment a character is conceptualized, they give them backstory, they give them wants and needs, personality quirks, and find out what makes them who they are. They're not just some hired fuck who sits in a booth and reads lines.

There's a reason Steve didn't feel comfortable playing Kermit, cause Kermit was a part of Jim as Jim was a part of Kermit.

Hell, even people who take over a character like, say, Bill Corbette for Trace Beluie, felt uncomfortable. They try to emulate the character and does shit impressions, and it takes a long time for them to get used to it.

So no, it's not just 'OH SURE, WE CAN SLAP ON A NEW PUPPETEER' especially if it's unannounced and sudden like this firing.
>>
>>93999393
irrelevant
>>
>>93999414
Except not, you fucking Disney apologist.

There's a reason that Scooter wasn't recasted for good until David Rudman tried him. There's a reason Rowlf took almost 10 years to recast.

>A) Tell me that my “business conduct was unacceptable”?

It pretty much is. Doesn't meet accounting rules, doesn't tell the insurers you're on set so nobody was actually insured if the insurer found out, doesn't meet union rules (strictly, though lots of people sign on-set - but have a strong "verbal" or preliminary written agreement and are just waiting on the decision to offer them more money. Which is what Whitmire admits to here.

>B) Accuse me of “brinkmanship”?

Well, that's pretty much how anybody's going to see it. And he's now confirmed it himself, so, you know. Pretty much unhireable with that attitude. Nobody - nobody - is bigger than the production. You hold up production, you hold up everybody else, and there's a good chance people won't get paid if you hold it up long enough.

>C) Fire me without an ultimatum for holding up his production?

The only reason he's still working today lol is that he wasn't fired back then for being a fucking dickhead. If someone comes to you with a derisory offer, sure, it's a negotiation. But if you're on-set and they come down and ask to see your paperwork, you'd better have it, because it's not your set. It's theirs. They're protecting it.

I get that a lot of people think Whitmire was hard done to but to be honest the man is himself now confirming that he's a fucking primadonna. You don't hear about goddamn Billy West sulking in trailers until the studio meet his demands. Even Dan goddamn Castellaneta took a paycut the last two negotiations. It happens.

And Whitmire has hit the limit of everybody's patience. He'll have been doing this every contract out since 1990, emboldened by being protected by his sugar daddy - that's a lot of work they've sent his way, and a lot of aggravation he's given back. Now he's bitching about Henson's daughter one day (despite the fact she knew him a hell of a lot better than Whitmire ever did) and trying to invoke Saint Henson himself the next.

Fuck this guy.

I wonder what the world would be like if Jim where still with us
>>
>>93999540
Oh wow, someone that doesn't know the story. Steve sent ONE note to the fucking writers of ABC's the muppets, about thinking how Kermit wouldn't lie to his family about breaking up with Piggy. And then Disney claimed he made Kermit unfunny and depressing, despite OTHER PEOPLE writing for the frog that don't know how to handle the muppet writing like Jerry Juhl did.

Honestly, there's a reason when Jim died, they heavily considered retiring Kermit and Rowlf but Brian Henson came to Steve and said 'Here, you pick up the reigns' and now Brian's fucking turning his back on him?

Trace saw Crow, picked it up and made it his.
Bill took over for Trace, despite not even being a puppeteer and not being an understudy, and even said himself, season 8 Crow looks like he suffered a stroke.
Hampton Yount isn't even PREFORMING the puppet, it's Jim Henson guys doing it. Hampton's using a remote control to provide the mouth movement and the voice, THAT'S ALL he's doing.

The new Crow is good after you get used to it being different. The new Tom sounds enough like Jonah that I keep getting their voices confused, though that got a little better by the end too. Gypsy's voice is entirely different but I didn't mind that as much as I expected to.

Well, this. At least they still felt more like Star Wars than Rogue One, for instance, and didn't shit completely on the happy ending of the original trilogy.
