I just thought of something that would make SM3 significantly less shitty.
Why not have Sandman kill Gwen's dad? His death is a notable moment in the comics and it would tie Spidey's hatred of Sandman to a moment from the film without tying it into the first movie. It'd also let all the dramatic tension that results from Uncle Ben's death in the first two movies.

This is easily one of my favorite moments in Spider-Man's history but it isn't necessarily a nice one. I was more in awe and I genuinely felt for Peter. I couldn't even imagine what would be going through his head at that moment.
