Plus, on the political level, it might have helped to smooth things over after the war. The Bei Fongs are the richest family in the Earth Kingdom, after all. Marrying Toph could have been Zuko's gesture of goodwill, a sign that he truly does want harmony and peace between the nations.

Why is every romance in this series so consistently bad? The comics especially seemed to go even further on how garbage the romance in this series is. There wasn't even that much romance in ATLA. Humans in the Avatar world are naturally non-benders. It would've been cool to see Energy Bending and all its potentials + the rise of technology for Non-Benders to use to combat benders as they no longer know how to Energy Bend and can't become Benders anymore. It could've have flawlessly lead into Season 2 spirit shenanigans (- minus the Dark Avatar), Red Lotus, and Kuvira.

You're not really interpreting what happened correctly. His destiny was never to kill Ozai. Aang was challenged with a true identity war. If he didn't kill Ozai, how was he going to be able to be the Avatar and protect the world, and yet if he did, he'd be destroying his entire culture of which he was the last remnant? He literally was face with a choice between being the Avatar OR being the Last Airbender. Energybending as a solution didn't avoid anything about destiny, it encapsulated it. Aang made his own decision (asspull handed to him sure) and found his own solution where his predecessors did not. The last episode is Avatar Aang because by defeating Ozai and delivering justice without having to kill him, Aang showed everyone the kind of Avatar he could be. After a hundred years of war, the current tyrant was brought down with mercy.

Frankly, I just want a Suki focused book. Having it about her choosing between her loyalty to Zuko and her home or Sokka would be neat, even if it wasn't romantic. Zuko relies so damn much on Suki in the books it isn't funny. His reign would fall apart without her. She's pretty much been running Mai as an intelligence operative against Ozai loyalists, organizing household security and providing personal protection to the Fire Lord and his family, and providing a sympathetic ear for Zuko to vent too, easing his mental stress. She also never doubts his intentions or his ability as a ruler.

She's essentially his closest and most essential supporter. Even when everyone else thought he'd gone evil she held out and reserved judgement, believing there had to be a deeper reason for his actions, believing his intentions were good.
