Don't forget that octopi can camouflage, squeeze through any opening their beak can fit through, they can regenerate, and each leg has it's own brain. Fully utilize the octopus.

They can be overridden by the central brain, but it's enough that each limb is able to independently explore the surrounding area and react quickly without needing a complicated though process.
