Nam was a shitty war nobody wanted anon. Yes, the paranoia over communism spreading was still there but when what people thought was going to be a quick skirmish was an ongoing war lasting for years with more and more troops dying, all for some foreign country nobody gave a shit about the disdain for it grew. People stopped caring about one shitty island having a civil war.
