The first '90s trilogy was about Logan's love story and an overarching Phoenix saga framework.
The second flashback trilogy was about Xavier and Magneto's SPOILER: supergay backstory with an overarching redemption narrative for Mystique.
This last move (or maybe they're going for another trilogy?) is going to be about the comic-accurate portrayal big payoff they've been setting up in all these movies.
That payoff falls flat if those past stories, and their main characters, aren't involved in the resolution.

And they still have to drop all those huge comic-accurate spoilers (like the one above) to freak out the casuals with a big Keyser Sosey twist.
