Sam and Max is a weird oddity that can't be explained. It has become popular enough to have been introduced one way or another a large number of artistic mediums focused on "geek culture" yet if you were to ask anyone on the street if you knew what it was they'd have no idea. It's the most a cult classic franchise could feasibly do. All they need is a film and they've would have essentially done everything.
