Because to most people the western comic scene seems like an exclusive clubhouse for 30+ year old fans that isn't really accessible for many people beyond that niche group, and this perception is at least somewhat correct.

Also, manga much more visibly caters to a fuckton more genres, whereas in America if a comic isn't about superheroes it's regelated to the obscurity of the 'indie' supergenre. And really only certain superheroes consistently have comics about them, with many books just being shitty short-burn marketing ploys that are not at all attractive to new readers - in general, really, western comics do everything they can to turn off newcomers.

On the anime front, he genre thing applies, but more than that it's a question of quality. Anime a lot of people would consider mediocre are honestly way better than the best TV animated series America has to offer, because the latter are hamstrung by their expected audience. At least, in any genre but comedy. There is no American action cartoon as good as Bebop or GitS, or even something less impressive like DtB. A lot of the dime a dozen action anime that come out every season are better than the best America has to offer, to be honest. We only sperg out about those cartoons here on /co/ because we're comparing them to shit like Ben 10.

Finally, I know people will get butthurt over this, but even with the recent drive for excessive tokenism in comics, people still think of superhero comics (and by extension American comics as a whole) as a white boy's club mostly about white character written for a white fanbase. Because they kinda are, for no reason other than the time period most of the popular character arose from and the failure of Marvel or DC to really popularize anyone or anything new over the last several decades.
