Do you think superheroes work better when they constantly share a universe and stories together, or when each "family" maintains a level of independence?
Either is fine if they're well done.

Honestly one of my favorite aspects about bat comics is that they get to stay in their own little island so you can keep up with everything that's going on without having to follow a dozen different books. Even most events are still "Bat events"

The same is true of Superman too in the most part.

Cyborg was in the JL before flashpoint?

It's true for a lot of characters that are head and shoulders more popular than those below them. Editors know that readers won't give a fuck if character X from a book selling half as much shows up (or at least only a tiny percentage will). It's a big reason why Bruce and Clark are friends - they're the only two DC characters comparable to each other. Spider-Man is the big exception to this because despite being #1 in Marvel for decades, Marvel has always embraced the whole shared universe thing more enthusiastically than DC
Shared universes are awesome. Spammed crossovers are not.

yes he was in Robinson's run, but I don't think he joined in the era the OP is from
I think when it is out of control (like DC or Marvel), it is bad.
They should be written to stand on their own merits, and any crossovers should only be loosely regarded as "canon" instead of trying to weave an entire shared universe of bullshit together.
Maybe even write their continuities as though through a one-way mirror; so maybe their solo canon can be mentioned in crossovers, but not the reverse unless it's explicitly for a smaller scale crossover.

>work better
There is no unshaken metric for such an evaluation, what could work for one may not for another.

I require MTU omnis.

I like the question, but most good capes can function either way. I think, however, that the Fantastic Four, or even Claremont X-Men provide a much better "family dynamic" than having 4 spider-men, 5 wolverines or 17 bat characters. I hate that shit. It's like a roadsign pointing me right the fuck out of a comic.
