THE TOA USE MECHANICAL SUITS CALLED EXO TOA AND MANAGE TO DEFEAT THE TWO DINOSAUR-LIKE BEINGS. THEY ARE ABSORBED INTO THE GROUND AND COVERED IN "ENERGIZED PROTODERMIS", ONE OF MANY MUTATIVE ELEMENTS IN THE BIONICLE UNIVERSE, WHICH TURN THEM INTO THE TOA NUVA. AS TOA NUVA, TAHU AND THE GANG HAVE ENHANCED ELEMENTAL POWERS, NEW TOOLS THAT DOUBLE AS TRANSPORTATION MEANS, AND CAN SHARE THEIR MASK POWERS WITH THOSE AROUND THEM. THEY WERE PRETTY NEAT. I'm running a group project composed of disgruntled Bionicle fans disappointed with how Lego handled the reboot.

We're trying to make a comic that's a spiritual successor.

I think this issue partially arises from the fact the design team at ADVANCE came up with the overaching plot, characters and themes, then Lego had different companies make the media out of it. Of course ADVANCE doing everything wouldn't be possible or advisible, but there was an issue with there being too many cooks.

That only happened in one of the shitstain web serials from 2008, and it was done by Roodaka.

Which, in retrospect, means the 2005 saga turned out pretty shitty for the Rahaga, because the only reason they went looking for Keetongu was to get their old bodies back. Instead, they got caught up in a local conflict and almost got killed, then were stuck with 1000 years worth of urban renewal and animal control duty. But I guess they had nothing better to do anyways.

I third going with the MNOG, it should be the start for every newcomer.

Overall, there's not much real substance in the franchise, it's a kids toy line with a classic fantasy storyline that got more retarded as it went. There's some deeper stories in there with interesting character moments, and the world-building alone is fucking impressive. But basically the whole thing ran on atmosphere, cool ideas and memorable characters with crazy powers rather than on a coherent plot.

The BioSector wiki's editors try their best to tie everything together, but this franchise really wasn't meant to be thought about logically. It's like a modern version of ancient, timeless, mythological epics, where all the characters are sci-fi robo-beings. The further the plot progresses, the deeper the backstory is explored, so there's a lot of world-changing twists along the way.

The first gen was best because it had the most of that, and as the series went on, the world got less and less development (though I think Bara Magna was a belated attempt to reverse this trend)

1st Metru Nui year was OK, it still had some of that mystical feel, it's just that the primitive island backdrop was changed to a futuristic yet at the same time ancient city. Those CD games and animations still carried that early atmosphere in some form.
It was more in the 2nd Metru Nui year when things completely changed, Lego abandoned Templar studios (the creators of MNOG and the Flash animations), they stopped making individual CG promos for the characters, the original main writer quit, and the whole story turned dark and cynical.

Nothing remarkable. Average kid's toy cartoon with a nice art style but cheap animation, forced humor, clueless characterization and writing that uses lines like "we're strong because we care" and "you have the power, you just have to believe" unironically. Of course this is just paraphrasing, but you get the gist of it.

And yes, the ending is a big mess of plot holes and building up to fucking nothing. Thanks to Lego ending the toy line and forcing the show's creators to end it halfway through.

I enjoyed the first batch of eps. They were mediocre but the fact that I was watching an actual Bionicle cartoon was sure something. Just hearing the names Tahu, Gali and the others tingled some kind of childhood feeling.

I guess the bar was put so low by the 2015 media that I actually got a kick out of such basic things. But the second couple of episodes didn't live up to even this lowered standard.

I feel like the movies aged just fine, it's just that they were mediocre to start with. There is some good stuff in there though. The characters are generally accurate to their personalities(except Onua) and the character interactions in 2 and 3 were pretty good. I've always really loved the way they handled Matau talking sense into Vakama towards the end of 3.

Dancing. Various sorts of dances come up in the early parts of MNOG and the scrapped PC game's final cutscene. It was never mentioned afterwards.
Greg also hated Taxi Crabs, but they were later accepted back into canon due to fan pressure.

Kaita were also forgotten after 2004, but that was more because the set designers stopped doing them. The concept was still referenced later on but never shown in action.

It's still incomplete because someone at Lego's online team fucked up and deleted parts of the game, but it can be completed (it's not worth it though). Also you can manually edit your inventory and skill level so you don't have to do all those goddamn chores and grinding.

Basically, certain parts of the fanbase now regard Greg Farshtey as a hack who weighed down the storyline with too much unnecessary crap. He's often compared to George Lucas in that he does fine work if someone plots out the story for him beforehand. But left to his own devices, Greg turned Bionicle into a messy playground for all sorts of badly thought out ideas.
Writing for Bionicle wasn't his main occupation and he wasn't part of the group that initially created the franchise, so he had his own view of what Bionicle "should" be like. He dropped most of the story's mythical, mysterious aspects and turned it into a more generic scifi/action story based on edgy comics and books he read as a kid. And since he hated planning ahead, most of his original stories went nowhere. Instead of proper plotting and character writing, he took refuge in cramming the story full of pointless twists, deaths, violence and generic, interchangeable characters.
And he also had a bad habit of canonizing stupid ideas that fans suggested to him. However this is also the reason why the other part of the fanbase loves him. They see him as the true "father" of Bionicle because he wrote most of its fiction.

Lego retires molds for older stuff. This is why there were only a handful of original Bionicle pieces still used by the reboot, and those were only available because they were used in Hero Factory not long ago. Most anything that's older than that won't be produced anymore unless absolutely necessary (and seeing how Lego now treats Bionicle like dirt, that's unlikely).

Some years back there was a joke told by Lego's parts designers that that they had melted down their old Bionicle molds to make a statue. But they cleared up this bullshit later on and said that they have actually buried them under concrete.
