Making Uncle Ben a shitty person a weakens him as a martyr to inspire Peter to do the best he can to save all.

What the movie should have had was just a lil more focus on Uncle Ben. Not much more (they still did a good job with worried aunt may having this tragic undertone in her fear for Peter) but maybe something like
Near the end when Peter is chatting up Vulture and he's talking about how "Tony Stark gets to profit from weapons but us little guys can't" Peter should have made a comeback about how "one of these days these actions will come back to hurt your family. I've had it happened, and I wouldn't wish that kind of pain even on you."

Well the story would be a bad peter. I like the stories that are slow falls to villainy, when ever step by itself makes sense, until What the Fuck, I'm a bad guy. Stuff like Worm.

Plus it could have Ben die before they get really bad. He was doing the Spider thing for what like a year before Civil war. It could have been a tad lower key then, no killing henchman and stuff. Then maybe Ben gets shot by a Damage Control Goon and Spiderman takes his place.

One thing I really like about Man of Steel, is Pa Kent being the dark mentor firgue. Like if Pa Kent was part of Gotham criminal crew, it could have just as easily been Superman under the wing of Pa Kent instead of Jor El. Could make a great story for a elseworld or fanfic.
