It's good. The middle two episodes aren't great, but the last episode is fucking hype. The action scenes are all well done.

Artsyle is uninspired, the animation is cheap with horrible timing in the action scenes, but the dialogue is good and they characterized Trevor really well. Plus I'm a whore for Castlevania and ive always wanted a series and this does it well enough.

I was really hoping for a live-action Castlevania, I had no idea it was going to be animated.

I think most of the light humor was spot on and endeared me to the protags far more than your usual animu and/or cartoon. Also, the fact that they had some fucking sense to them. Seriously, any other show and the protagonist would've just assumed that the Speakers would hold up their end. I was just waiting for Trevor to act like a moron and not get them to safety, so that Sypha could have a revenge reason for killing daddy drac.

Also the fights were great. Juuust anime enough for it to be exciting, but more-or-less adhering to the laws of physics in terms of damage. The hero can't be thrown through eighty stone walls and keep fighting- a few hard punches do the trick. I thought the cyclops fight was surprisingly hype.

My only complaints are thus:

1) if Grejit is the last city left then what's the point in even killing Dracula? I mean, the "city defense" was like six guys with pikes. If those are the last humans left in the country, if that's all there is, then take your time, guys. Go on a vacation and deal with the Dracula stuff later. The country is already fucked and basically everyone is dead except like a dozen people.

2) Some of it looked kinda cheap, and despite my enjoyment of the fights, they could've gone from good to fantastic with a better budget. It's art is consistent, but lacks vision. Perhaps simply being good enough is what they strived for in terms of visuals? Not wanting to shoot for the stars and fail like so many other Video Game adaptations? Instead focusing on the writing and action? In any case, I hope it's improved in the next season. Castlevania itself should be a sight to behold.

There's too much cursing for no reason; the gore isn't earned, instead, it's random and doesn't leave an impact; the first episode painted Dracula like a complete faggot-- A "headstrong" woman shows up and convinces him to give humanity a shot in less than 5 minutes (all while he's slinking through the darkness like he's doing improv); After 2 episodes in, Trevor kicks everyone's ass-- there are no stakes, no obstacles for him to overcome (instead of leaning into the drunkard angle and using it effectively, they squander it). There's more to say, but it's probably not worth it. I'll finish it up for the sake of it, but man, a lot of subtly would've gone a long way.

I would have preferred something partially based in the original games, but I that's just my opinion.

I mean, the color palettes of the game were pretty good (despite the limitations). I kind of like the all-light-blue palette of Sypha and the Bela Lugosi inspired look of Alucard, but I guess that shit would not work in a modern cartoon.

That's for three reasons:

A) Most Japanese don't really understand all the Christian denominations and assume they all look at act like Catholics because that's the dominant Christian faith in their country. Hence why everyone in Castlevania looks like they're Catholic.

B) Dracula was never supposed to be THE Vlad Tepes but a vampire who happen to live in Vlad's old stomping grounds. When Bram Stoker wrote Dracula, Transylvania was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire so it was very feasible that a German Catholic noble would rule over a bunch of Orthodox peasants.

C) Catholic visual aesthetics are much more well known than Eastern Orthodox. If Trevor Belmont was fighting a bunch of dudes with long beards and silk robe most people would probably mistake them for wizards instead of clergymen.

The series NEVER had a consistent artstyle, except for the Kojima one. I think most designs are good in their own right, and each one fits the mood in their corresponding games.

First two episodes were boring and poorly written, only in the last part of ep. 3 and in ep. 4 did Ellis' writing skill kick in. Dark and gritty with a sideorder of self-aware humor I really enjoyed.

Low point: Shit VA for Belmont, the magic chick and Dracula's son actors did far better. I would have preferred Dracula's son's actor for the main character voice.
