Suicide Mouse, Dead Bart, and Squidward's Suicide are all good /co/ creepypastas. The only reason they're made fun of now is because the "lost episode" stories became overdone and cliché. Prove me wrong.

No, Dead Bart's was semi-decent (the virus part was some dumb bullshit they didn't need to add, for starters), and Squidward's Suicide was the moment where it started being overdone and cliché.

I liked Suicide Mouse, it just isn't scary. The whole idea of a classic 50's cartoon animated by lovecraftian horrors is really novel. I also like the aesthetic of the Jungle Book Treasure Island story for that same reason.

Dead Bart is 99% cliches, the ending twist is the only cool part. When the scariest part of your story is just a rehashed clip from the show proper you need to reevaluate your writing prowess.
>>
The reason the Family Guy creepypasta works is that it takes the actual show as a basis, rather than an unfeasible 'lost episode' or whatever, and then spins an unsettling story about why certain details were there. There should be more /co/ pastas like that.

Alright, here's something that's a bit similar to a Creepypasta in feel. I know for a fact this scene actually exists, but it wasn't very interesting

Remember the show Catscratch? This scene was in "Scaredy Cat", the Halloween episode with the aliens.

At the scene where they're in space, Gordon talks to his brothers about how evil has come to cocoon them on Halloween. While this is happening, a small, boxed frame of Hovis dressed up as a rabbit (this is a still shot from another episode) pops up for a few seconds. It's really odd and random; I'm guessing someone on the crew accidentally spliced a part from one episode into another.

I saw this part back when I saw the episode on TurboNick in 2005. However, when I saw a Mega.nz rip taken from Nicktoons Network, it wasn't there. Maybe they scrubbed it out later airings.

Here's proof that it exists:

The Ashley, Kansas thing was kinda good in the beginning but sputtered out in the end. Quiet Sky is good but not really scary. Psychosis is shit desu.

The real good ones to me are Pale Luna (cliche but restrained and effective), barbie.av (absolute in its refusal to answer any question and thus leaving most of the heavy lifting to you) and Candle Cove

What do you guys feel is the issue with most creepypastas? I think they try to hard to add a twist at the end and they try to copy the atmosphere of other more famous works instead of working on their own consistent and unique atmosphere.

its the one and probably most persistent problem with creepypasta's, kids and tween dickheads not understanding that people appreciate a work a hell of a lot more when its original.
>>
>>93739897
I think it's the obsession with shock value that ruins and (ironically) blunts it's effect
>>
>>93739897
A lot of creepypastas fall into the same trap of needing "more". Most creepypastas are just derivative HYPERREALISM trash that rely on gory images to lure in spooked children for cheap thrills, but a suprising amount are solid core ideas that are ruined by creators that don't know when to quit. Sometimes a good twist can make a story better but usually they're a result of an author who feels his story isn't "scary" enough yet so they add some overly cliche reveal to fill up the word count.

This is the secret brilliance of SCPs. The best SCP's (outside of the elaborate story SCPs) are those which are just a simple concept played out to the full, no more no less. They don't need to be scary, just weird or unusual or unsettling enough to justify needing to be under security.

But in creepypasta land all stories are dragged out until they're "scary" enough to spook 12 year olds into shitposting about them on the internet.

Pale Luna. Extra points for dealing with a rare subject, though I guess you had to have played text adventure games in their infancy to really appreciate it.

You never really knew what you were going to get with text adventure games back then, and some of them did have a lot of surprisingly disturbing content.

This, hands down.
Though the only reason SCP's are good now is that the quality standards are very high, quite a few are deleted. One of the best scps, the ticket (http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-342) is fantastic. It has no big twist, no shock value, it's just a cursed ticket causing havoc.

For me, a lot of the most disappointing creepypastas start off really well: lots of compelling mysteries and oddities with spooky implications, good solid story behind putting the character in the situation, and most importantly lots and lots of really creepy atmosphere. But a lot of them check all those boxes and kind of work themselves into a corner where they can't end well. If the writer just stops somewhere without giving an explanation to the weirdness or an extra punch at the end, be it a twist or climax or whatever, then its disappointing and anticlimactic, and the reader leaves feeling like it was just a waste of time. But, on the other hand, if they do try to force a big climax like a spooky monster pops out and chases the character right into a plot convenience that explains all the mysteries were the result of a government experiment or ghost or portal to hell or whatever, then things often suddenly take a turn for the ridiculous and the audience loses the necessary suspension of disbelief and the whole thing just seems stupid. I think it's relatively easy to suck me into reading a pasta that seems to have a good start, but I've got a lot of respect for writers that can avoid ending their pasta on a sour note because that part seems especially difficult.

Some examples of what I'm talking about with "sillier" endings are the Mowgli's Palace pasta and the one about the Godzilla NES game. And I think I recall that opposite problem applying to Ted the Caver, ending with "brb guys" and he just never comes back.

>>
>>93740988
It's a good story but as a creepypasta it fails. It just constantly stretches by disbelief and I feel more like I'm watching a American Horror Story episode than reading a creepypasta. I think the ideal creepypastas should be like Pale Luna or Candle Cove. Short and factual in tone. I mean creepypastas are descended from urban legends, so that's the best form it could take
>>
>>93741075
As far as I know, the pasta was based on a real site that was shut down. Thanks to the popularity of the pasta, it was relaunched some time later and devolved into a shadow of its former self with cringy try hard "horror" videos
>>
>>93741076
Dunno about videos mocking it. I've got one where the reader plays it pretty straight, though. This guy generally does pretty decent pasta readings, in my opinion. The Happy Appy story is split into parts that are separate videos but they should be easy enough to find after the first.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVbybCu_frw
>>
>>93741075
I saw some of the videos, that shit ain't fake. My favorite Creepastas are those that merely elaborate on things that are already creepy enough on their own.

Like the Russian Sleep Experiment. Did it happen? No, but similar human experiments are pretty much guaranteed to have taken place. It takes something creepy that few people know the details of and makes up a plausible scenario, making it hard to tell what's real and what's fake.

Only watched a few episodes of the start of the candle cove one with a roommate, and it wasn't worth it to us to keep up with it. Might have tried harder to watch it if it'd come to a streaming service we have like Netflix.

From what I saw, I think I really preferred candle cove as a short pasta. Building a whole show around it seemed like a bad idea from the start, and what I saw didn't convince me otherwise. I wanted to appreciate the puppet show recreations, and I kind of did like some of the puppet designs, but the clips looked too high budget and therefore missed some of the tone and atmosphere in the original story.

I don't think I'd really want to see any of my favorite creepypastas subjected to being expanded into full tv show seasons; things often get too muddled when they need to be stretched and have additional drama and characterizations injected into them.

The ending of Abandoned By Disney was disappointing, but I feel like the author did salvage it a bit with the other installments. Still a little too unrealistic, but at least it made sense in context.

A Few Suggestions is the best installment of that series, and it's because it does the exact thing you suggest here. Build up the creepy atmosphere and let the audience fill in the rest, no jumpscare monsters.

How to make terrible creepypasta: A beginner's guide

1. "it gave me a bad vibe" type shit before anything actually happens
2. "Curse" shit, i/e "my parents died after watching spongebob!"
3. using hyper-realistic as a description of images
4. Using blood imagery like it's a fucking period piece
5. haunted tvshow/game/object talking to the main character
6. Overdescribing stupid details, i/e "his eyes looked like bleached golf balls with cracks on the 4th polar quadrant"

The other reason it works better than other lost episode pastas is that it doesn't go overboard with the supernatural or gore. What gore that is mentioned in the story is not far off from what an average Family Guy episode would do, so it still sounded plausible. There was no bullshit spliced frames or lost episode video that magically appeared out of nowhere or something like that.
>>
>>93732739
>prove me wrong
>protip you can't

Sure, I can. These were the progenitors of a shitty genre of creepypasta that relied more on "lol this is a subversion of what you EXPECT from shows but with creepy graphics and soundtrack" than anything actually interesting. They were never good, just the first of something shitty.
>>
>>93740177
>but a suprising amount are solid core ideas that are ruined by creators that don't know when to quit.

That's exactly it. Let's take a look at Dead Bart:

As clumsy as this is (case in point: the virus that destroys his computer) with a bit of editing I think this could be better.

But then there was the sequel:

http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/A_Dead_Bart_Update

And it didn't fucking add anything we didn't already guess from the first one and anything new was basically now lost episode creepypasta cliches.

i can and will. a majority of the spook factor from creepypastas is the idea that they take place in the real world and have some sort of basis in reality. dead bart has no basis in reality thanks to its sequel, yes, it has a sequel, thanks to the passage of time. we know everyone didn't die in 2013 so all suspension of disbelief is gone. squidward's suicide has no basis in reality because it's entirely unrealistic that an unpaid intern, who seems to be something of an anomaly in space-time if the sheer amount of fucking tense swaps is anything to go by, to be given early access to spongebob episodes. and suicide mouse doesn't even list a fucking phone number or e-mail to contact the guy with despite asking to do so. the stories are poorly written garbage that try to make wacky cartoon characters scary and fail miserably every time. you cannot make spongebob scary. you cannot make mickey mouse scary. you cannot make the simpsons scary. if you think these stories are scary, you're not only stupid, but a giant pussy.

Take any SCP that's below 1000 with a large heap of salt. There's a lot that's good around there, but in general the site was still trying to find the proper tone and quality varies wildly since there wasn't much quality control back then.

Not to say some shit doesn't still get through, but at least most of the time it's well written shit.

Squidward's Suicide is not the best, its grammar sucks at time, but it does get too much hate. It's a fine one-off story, why do you people expect something like an urban legend not to be silly? Everyone follows a formula rather than thinking of something theirselves. Take the earth for instance; some people think it's flat, others think it's round but in reality you have to imagine the globe with the continents smeared on the inside of the globe, rather than the outside

The sun is an immortal man. That is, he looks like a really ideal human, even if he doesn't act it- he's an obesssive compulsive who kills people for annoying his Yoga. He moves from one end of the bridge to the other tocause the reasons, and around the bridge in a spiral pattern to cause the day-night cycle. His court is the Moon, the planet and the stars

The bridge is a cover for a blackhole, and space is stretched exponentially in a gradient towards it. So, on the bridge, there's more space than on the Earth's surface. The Sun is closer to the Earth's surface - on the edge of the bridge, hanging off the railing with his face uncomfortably close to us.

No star comes close to the poles, and so they stay frozen - the Sun is clearly biased toward looking at the North pole. But, when the glacier cracks, the resulting iceberg floats to the lowest elevation - which isn't the poles. Antarctica and Arctica have the highest average elevations of all continents. Only water vapor floats to the poles. Gravity is the weakest force, and EM bonding and Energy in newtons controls the position of an object within the sphere - if you increase your altitude, you increase your potential energy. And gaining altitude requires the addition of Energy, or rather it's conversion into potential energy.

The potential energy represents the newtons with which you'd impact the Earth if you fell from that altitude. Changing planetary orbits entails changing your potential energy relative to two objects.

There is one thing which has always bothered me:
Whats the deal with creepypastas and file extensions? It's like people think something is automatically more creepy if it has .exe or .avi slapped to it.
Is there a psychological reasoning behind this?
Like the extension representing a dark secret behind a cryptic looking word in form of a file, thus making it more mystical looking?
Or am I just reading too much into this?

Once I was reading a great creepypasta with an interesting mystery and the build up all lead to "all the girls in town are getting kidnapped and raped by the males in town because of the water or some bullshit". Instantly went from a solid 8 to a 2. I don't even hate rape in stories but I fucking hate shock value for the sake of shock value. It's easy and cheap. Just like how Glenn from the Walking Dead died just for the shock value because people eat that shit up.

The Russian Sleep Experiment is a great example how you can ruin a perfectly good story with a sudden change in tone.
It's entire creepiness is based on the concept of seeing the side effects of the scientists creation unfold.
The side effects seem medical in nature, without being too over the top to create a disruption in the suspension of disbelief. All of this could theoretically happen in real life.
And then they suddenly ruin everything in the last sentences of the story by being all faux deep by saying that they all just became mad because "We only sleep to keep the eldrich abomination of madness in humankind at bay".
The fact that the last prisoner was even able to talk because he seems to be possessed was ridiculously out-of-place. Sad because it started really well.

Godzilla is the fucking king of the monsters and the creepypasta is the game trying to create more and more monsters to throw at you after you finally defeat Red, causing the game to become more corrupted and advanced in its graphic style, eventually creating a physical, visible corruption on the cartridge itself. The game eventually realizes it can't defeat Godzilla, but it can definitely kill you, so the corruption gets into the player's lungs or something and he dies.

The story ends up being about the player's hubris, believing that because he defeated Red he was able to conquer the game entirely, when in reality, he was only commanding the Godzilla character to do it and he was in no real control.

Your mom.

>and he dies.
fuck off with that. first of all stories where the main character was dead all along and is writing the story from beyond the grave are the worst. second of all not every horror story needs life or death stakes in order to be scary, especially not something about a dang video game.
>>
>>93755984
Wait he can't die at the end and your reasoning is

i'd prefer a dead girlfriend ending to "he was dead all along a spooky ghost wrote the story woooooo." if you're writing a story from a first person perspective that's supposed to take place within the realms of reality, like a creepypasta, fuck off with that shit, it kills suspension of disbelief. oh and you can make winning against the bad guy scary or at least have scary implications for the character. take marble hornets and tribetwelve for example. at the end of marble hornets, yes, tim is clearly alive and manages to kill alex, but he's clearly not alright and it's implied he's going to keep spreading the operator sickness and hurting more people. in the first season finale of tribetwelve noah survives the collective's attempt to kill him sure, but he learns that one day he will become a member of the collective and lose everything. it's almost like the excuse of not being able to make something scary because "haha it's just a story" is a shitty excuse for poor writers who can't make something scary without it popping out and killing everyone involved. fuck that noise.

682 is terrible and everything thats wrong with early SCP's. Between that and Abel driving half the "SCP interaction and recovery" stories it seemed like half the site wanted it to be an anime-influened war between superpowered beings and various goofy nefarious organizations.

There is nothing interesting about a giant invincible evil monster whose only important features are that its invincible and evil. The additional tests on that thing drove everyone who wanted to create another lame superhero reality bender to throw at this thing.
>>
>>93756705
682 always came off as boring, but necessary to me. Not an interesting SCP in and of itself, but it can help highlight abilities or limits of other SCPs, and sort of keep a cap on how overpowered things are allowed to get.
Still don't really get why people are fascinated by it as it own thing though.

This one isn't always so bad. When the character is speaking in hindsight after the terrible events have occurred, this is the normal reaction for someone in their position to have. Lots of people say "I always knew such and such was trouble" after the fact because that's just how recollection works, we always like to think we were properly suspicious of bad things before shit went bad even if we actually weren't. But, yeah, if it's the case where it's a diary entry setup happening in real time and the character says "ooo, i have bad vibes" before they have any reason to, that's a fair thing to raise an eyebrow at.

>Using blood imagery like it's a fucking period piece
Are you making a stupid menstruation joke or do you really not understand what the term "period piece" actually means?

It's never been used for this purpose. Almost all of the "vs 682" stories have been things that should've been able to kill 682 regardless of its resilience, but didn't because of plot armor. The only experiments that are well written were either shooting him with powerful conventional/experimental weapons that just didn't work fast/powerful enough to stop him from regenerating, or using SCPs that obviously weren't going to work.
>>
>>93748672
No.
>>
>>93760066
Sadly true. I think the issue with 682 is more how it's used, rather than the SCP itself though. Like Abel is stupid, both in concept AND execution, but 682 is an okay concept, but never used very well.

That's the point. When you take something that isn't meant to be traditionally scary and inject scary elements into it, it often winds up more scary because your mind is fooled by the juxtaposition of opposing elements of threatening and non-threatening. This is why many horror stories and movies use shit like creepy little kids. Kids aren't traditionally or logically scary, so it's extra freaky when you make them act creepy vs just using an adult who you might expect creepy shit from.

I honestly have a hard time getting into creepy pastas that aren't first person, so I more or less consider them the default.

When the spookiness hinges on being accepted as realistic and accepted as a real event that actually occurred, it needs to either have some form of first person narrator, or be a collection of evidence presented by an editor that serves as a first person narrator. If the narrator is omniscient then the whole thing is presented as entirely fictitious from the get go and therefore becomes much less spooky.

>>
>>93760461
i get that's what the pastas are going for but it almost never works with media that's so established and ingrained in our society. you can make the IDEA of certain benign childish things scary, like a puppet show with candle cove or, if you're a normie whose idea of "scary" is "JUMPSCARE", animatronic kids characters like in that one series of video games that furries love. shit like squidward's suicide fails at this and pastas like it hinge exclusively on shock value, despite the fact that kids being murdered has NOTHING to do with the fact that it's a spongebob squarepants story, or even worse, just the imagery alone of "it's a classic childhood character but he was doing something SPOOKY." "mario was covered in blood, isn't that SCAAAARY?" no, that's that racist mario video with like a hundred million views. established family friendly media is almost impossible to make scary and it's why something like petscop will always be better than anything like sonic.exe or blood whistle.

The twist was too telegraphed, they showed everything in the 2nd episode then tried to make it a shocking moment in the next 3 when they address them. The tooth monster was forced literally. It was apparently made to be used in Hanibal, but they never ended up using it. It felt like more could have actually been based around the creepypasta and they strayed too far to make the series longer than it needed to be. I think Channel Zero would be better as a tales from the crypt or twilight zone knock off than trying to make each season based on one short story.

Squidward's Suicide is just silly. Even if I ignore the bad grammar or how implausible a lot of it is, the biggest issue is how phenomenally unscary it is. I never found kids scary in horror movies though. They can stare and mumble and talk in unison and spaz out and be weird and do whatever the fuck they want, but if they come at me I know I could just jam my foot so far up their ass that it would actually, literally kick out their teeth, because they're fucking children.
>>

I started to enjoy Petscop more when I skipped to the last few entries, when he learns to shut the fuck up. I really hate, hate, hate it when something interesting happens and the narrator/actor keeps going OH MY GOD OH MY GOD THIS SHITS SO FUCKED WOW OH MY GOD WOW WHAT THE FUCK LIKE WHAT THE FUCK THIS SHITS SO FUCKED WOW THIS SHITS FUCKED UP OH MY GOD

Also it irritated me at first because he didn't even try to replicate the whole PS1's wobbly janky graphical rounding issue, which makes it really obvious and breaks immersion from the first five seconds that the game is built in unity and not the PS1 game he's claiming it to be. He could have just claimed it was a PC game from the late 90's and it would have worked just as well without being as irritating to people who actually had playstations.

you could just step on a centipede, that doesn't stop them from being creepy and potentially harmful should one bite you with its giant venomous mandibles. doesn't exactly apply to cartoon characters, but i'll be honest, i forget how we got to this point of the conversation.
>>
>>93777216
Don't step on centipedes. That can make it worse. Some species of centipedes have pheromones that attract all other centipedes in the area to their corpse once they get squished.

>see cockroach while in public
>acquaintance yells at me "anon, step on it!"
>I aint stepping on that thing
>calmly look for a disposable napkin to catch it with

>Creepypasta ep 2: conveys before the events of ep1, not bad but could be better without
>Creepypasta ep 3: electric boogaloo: it's the re-written version of ep 1 with a love interest, the following episodes turn out to be as fanfiction tier at this point
Basically creepypasta makers lose themselves and pretend like they're serious authors. This is the ultimate fate of every soon-to-be-popular work in the creepypasta community.
>>
>>93778681
Adding on to this, the thing that makes a lot of successful creepypastas good imo is having just the right amount of worldbuilding and extra detail while not being too clear with the actual events and reasons behind them; Just enough that you can begin to put the pieces together and sense that something bigger's happening while also knowing that you, as an outsider, will never know the full story. Even insanely in-depth shit like This House Has People In It manages to get this balance right despite how much of it there is. When creepypasta writers, like you say, pretend like they're serious it often results in them trying too hard to resolve things, which takes it from being some word of mouth story from the darkest parts of who knows where to a regular ass horror story and nobody wants that.
>>
>>93778681

Very rarely but you'll find actual Schizos on /x/. They all have a typing style that is pretty hard to explain. But largely you can tell if someone has Bipolar disorder through text and even autism. Schizophrenic writing is usually incomprehensible because many points aren't related to anything whatsoever and are usually just pure emotion and fear. Bipolars tend to create a wall of text without stops at times that talks about some discovery that leads to nothing and may abruptly end at a random point. Autistic people write in short sentences and describe things in the most literal form possible.

Schizohrenia: I was glad there was a chance to perform well in life, but it got thrown away because I am lost aside. But I love talking to people about this but they may not want to tell me anything. I was noticed to be odd but it made me feel great. Don't you think?

Bipolar: So I went to the store to buy a coke and I thought I saw a guy who knew me personally so I was like "whaddy'a know" and I wanted to talk to him but he looked at me strangely. I realized it was just a familiar face but I wanted to take the time to say that why are people so negative and hostile today? I couldn't even speak to him because he wanted to avoid me as much as possible. This is what happens when we teach children to fear every person they meet because every once in a while something could happen like them being kidnapped or raped or murders. It's pretty bullshit imo.

Autism: I know a lot about history so I took a subject on world history and geography. I used to make a lot of good grades in the class but the class stressed me because someone was mean to me all the time. I had to become homeschooled because the stress was getting to me. I am now working in a degree in psychology to uncover why people are like this. If people were more kind to each other we would be living in a better world. But it's because we are different a lot is why we are mean to each other.

Asking what makes something scary is like asking what makes something funny. If you can't tell, you're not cut out for making something scary/funny.

There was a pasta callec Clockwork I Unironically liked in middle school. It escalates way too fast and a girl ends up slaughtering an psycward, and her parents then puts a clock face in her eye socket.

Because if you apply logic to them they don't make sense.
Like if Matt Groening didn't want anyone to know about the edgy Bart snuff film why would he give someone a URL where they could download the episode?
And why would he have the URL memorized if he hated the episode?
And if he hated the episode so much and knew it was hosted somewhere why wouldn't he issue some sort of takedown notice?
And how is a cartoon with Hyper Realistic Gore supposed to freak anyone out when things like rotten/ogrish/the pain olympics/snuff films already exist?

Even an elementary Google search would indicate the original pasta goes at least as far back as 2010, but good job embarrassing yourself.

Japanese rituals are overhyped as fuck. When you look at it, many of those are just the more elaborated versions of truth or dare games aimed at middle school children.
