California, even long before it went liberal, has always been fast and loose with things like federal law, and even the constitution (fun fact: california had a eugenics program until 1979, though it fell out of favor quickly after 1945, because a certain german dictator read about the success of the eugenics program from one of the books from stanford U co-authored in german)

So the feds filled the state full of military bases during WW2, and never removed them.

California almost seceded during the civil war, leading to permanent federal presence after the civil war, the bases in the 40's just cemented federal presence here.

The bigger issue is that you do realize the reason why California is the 6th largest economy worldwide is directly because the state piggybacks off US trade laws and protection right? California would need to spend billions to start developing new relationships worldwide, and do you think the US would be even remotely friendly post-exit? The other states are California's biggest trade partners not including Mexico and Canada, and with not sharing a direct border with Canada do you think USA will even consider letting them in on TPP or NAFTA? If California somehow successfully ceded from the US it would probably be full Max Max mode after the first summer. There'd likely be a trade embargo in place for a year or more, Nevada and Colorado would sell their water elsewhere, all the welfare bums would riot once the free handouts stopped, immigrants would probably flood out the southern half of the state while the northern half fought to keep their guns from whatever government power got put into place.

I figure it would last at most a year before they rejoined the Union or China got involved with them and made the new country its bitch.
