I thought the idea was great, and read her comics for a while...but then I realized that they weren't doing anything unique. The idea of Gwen getting bitten and Peter dying as the lizard? Great set up. Daredevil as a villain? Brilliant. Punisher as a cop? Also smart.

But then they added SHIELD (ran by Peggy Carter) and black Cap and black Bucky. At that moment, it became clear that it was just a gender/race bent version of 616, and nothing really became as thought out. Hell, I can't even name Gwen's friends, they're that inconsequential

Her costume is one of the best things in modern times. The problem is that the two authors commissioned to write her stories are atrocious, bad art and nasty stories.

She's better as an archetype than an actual character, though I do enjoy her book somewhat. I remember reading the Death of Gwen Stacy years ago and it's a landmark moment for peter and comics in general, sure it inspired one of the most tired tropes of the 80's and 90's but she was first.

Though why did they not have this happen for spider-Gwen? Was peter really going to be a school shooter if he didn't get powers?

The big reason why Lizard Peter works is that it's directly connected with Gwen getting bitten by the spider. Mary Jane being a narcissistic band leader works because you can imagine it's because Peter never became Spider-Man. Evil Daredevil and Cop Castle's flaw is they're not exactly connected with Gwen getting bitten, but they can still work as side-divergences and they're sort-of connected with Spider-Man stuff.

But Peggy Carter as Fury and Samantha Wilson as Captain America and a clone of Samantha as Bucky feel like they belong in their own title and universe away from Spider-Gwen. Gwen getting bit by the spider wouldn't have caused any of that, and it feels like it's a waste to put them in a book that wouldn't really focus on them.
