Vulture was boring
Shocker was a 2 pump chump
MJ is an ugly black chick
Spider-Man doesn't throw a single lunch or kick
Tony Stark is even more flanderized

Tom Holland played a pretty solid Peter Parker though, was probably the only good takeaway from the movie

This has to be the most disappointing MCU movie to date, and it's probably because of Sony.

I'm legit confused. Why are people going so overboard with the praise o this film? They're all saying how it's better than Wonder Woman now, and is the "Best superhero film in years"

I get that from you:
-not knowing that Peter has had many different girlfriends for long periods of time
-being so incredibly focused on MJ when others were actually more important to Peter's development
-not realizing that Peter was not with MJ in high school

Your knowledge of Spider-Man appears to be entirely from cultural osmosis, so I'll ask again:

Why are you here?

I hated this movie, and I'm a bonafide Marveldrone who has thought every previous MCU flick was at least decent.

Peter literally doesn't do anything right the whole film. Any victory of his either comes from the suit, Daddy Stark, or luck. Even Vulture takes himself out. Why make Spider-Man into a helpless pussy?

Also, he seems like he does superheroing purely for kicks. What happened to power and responsibility? This movie had no heart.

No he wasn't. At least in my opinion. I don't think anyone was expecting him to be what he was at the end of the movie and whenever him and Peter fought it was definitely more in Vultures favor which made it more interesting to watch
>Shocker is a 2-pump chump
I can agree with that. He could have done more overall. They literally gave him the Marvel treatment onscreen by making him a black dude.
>MJ is an ugly black chick
I don't think she's ugly. Her personality sure is annoying though. Seriously, fuck the SJW "Slaves built the Washington Monument so lmao" shit.
>Peter doesn't throw a single punch
Honestly, when you're watching him do his thing with the webs, you barely notice because the level of violence is still the same. Spider-Man literally jumps onto a hood of a car and webs a guys face to slam it into said car. He throws people around and stuff.
The movie was fine, It has its flaws but I personally think most of the arguments here don't hold much water.

RT scores are largely meaningless and only needle dicks cite them to try and make a point. Thor 2 and Iron man 2 were passable at best. The pass/fail grading system of RT means it's possible for a 6/10 movie and a 10/10 movie to have almost identical scores.

Yeah, Peter's debate team is visiting the Washington monument, the teacher asks if MJ wants to come along. She says (deadpan, like pretty much every line she has) that she doesn't want to visit something built by slaves.
The teacher starts a "oh I'm sure that's not true" but looks over to a security guard who gives a "yeah kind of" hand wave. It's just played for laughs.

-Gilfoyle approaches MJ
"Enjoying your time at the monument?"
"Yeah, but I don't know how much I can enjoy a monument built by slaves" (/s)
"Well-erm, uh I'm sure the washington monument wasn't built by slaves
-turns to look around as camera pans to black security personnel
-he gives an "eh" face and the "sorta" hand gesture
-Gilfoyle gets flustered and leaves

I have no idea what the 'wrap' is. Dubious is just trying to push away the fact that they were involved. It is common knowledge that in 1850s (as well as the 1700s) slaves were used for manual labor; from everything dealing with masonry to even construction firearms and carpentry. There is no 'dubious' nature to the whole damn thing. If you are naive enough to think slaves were not involved building DC then you are keeping blinders up for some insane reason. Niggers built most of fucking America (the manual labor portions) back during that time.

Here, follow along;
Washington monument began construction in 1848
Slavery ended in 1865
The monument construction (in 1861) was paused during a little war and restarted in 1876 and finished in 1884
There a history lesson and math all in one. Slaves did play a part. It is fucking common sense. Unless you think slavery was not that bad and slaves, who were there for manual labor and hard jobs fat crackers did not wish to do, suddenly got a free pass on those days for some reason.

I don't know what this means but if the security guard were white it's inclusive, by faggot standards. The reason white people always bitch about these jokes is because it's black people making shit up and patting each other on the back for being faggots.

Slaves didn't build the washington monument. And they didn't build america. Business built america as well as industrialization. Which everyone had a hand in.

Black people in america just have nothing to be proud of so they celebrate their "culture" and make up achievements. "This country was built on the backs of black people." And I'm sure those poor white settlers living in tenements (the original projects) in the early 1900s had it so fucking easy.

It's funny that on /co/ of all places this is so hard to admit. The faggots around here really are delusional. If white people had it easy in the early 1900s Kirby wouldn't have gone into comics.

The north had already been gutting the power of the south and their plantations with industrialized business. If you don't beleive this you likely aren't american or are just from the south.

Agriculture didn't make america. It ruined it with it's last gasp corn lobbyists. Business and industrialization built this country. And the explosion of factories in the WW2 and post WW2 era along with almost socialism levels of taxes.

It is fact. There is no 'grey' area. From houses, to monuments, slaves built DC. That is the topic, that is the discussion, stay on topic without deflecting to a different time frame or something that does not relate.
Slave built, or started building, most of DC during that time. No one with any basic math skills or understanding of American history with a heavy does of common sense would think otherwise.

Homecoming's Vulture was still a great villain. He was probably my deepest point of investment in the story of the film.

Personally I think Homecoming will last simply because Holland and Keaton portray their characters so well, and it doesn't really feel like any of the other comicbook movies around. It's its own thing, which is nice. People seem pretty appreciative of that.

I didn't like it much, and I really wanted to. I was surprised that even the action didn't do much for me. The only notable sequence was the jet at the end and that's mostly because flashing rainbow lights just look cool. The web-slinging through the city felt somehow plain, when it should be the easiest thing to wring a rush out of.

Felt like they were really aiming for the middle, and succeeded. It's a cute teen comedy with some superhero flavor. Too much Stark for me. in fact, Peter wanting to impress Iron Man was kind of the main arc of the movie, which was weird because Spider-Man can lend itself to much higher levels of melodrama. But I know that wasn't their goal, and this just wasn't the movie for me. The scene with Keaton before the dance was great, though. Wish there was more of that level of tension.

http://www.thewrap.com/spider-man-homecoming-washington-monument/

There is zero evidence that slave labor was used to build the Washington Monument. This wasn't ancient history, there is documentation of records of this stuff that still exists.

Even sites with a social justice leaning are forced to fall back upon it likely having *indirect* slave profits used to finance the construction. Some of the donations came from southern plantation owners. But that gets into a hugely slippery slope, its like saying you support a jewish genocide because you drive a VW beetle.

Bottom line - unlike some other buildings in DC, there was no slave labor used to construct the Washington Monument. Yes, its a joke in the movie but coming from liberal writers it was almost assuredly "joking on the square", the very fact that we're having this discussion proves how the joke has served to muddy the waters, erode facts in favor of "that sounds right to my sensibilities".

> However, because of incomplete records, slave participation in the creation of antebellum edifices like the Washington Monument can often only be inferred, not proven.

>It appears likely that slave labor was also involved in the quarrying of the marble used in the first stage of the construction of the Washington Monument. Construction began in 1848 during the antebellum era and utilized marble from Cockeysville, Maryland. The owner of the quarry held slaves, but apparently leased out actual exploitation of the quarry to outside contractors, so there is no “smoking gun”. However, given the labor patterns prevailing in northern Maryland at the time, slave participation in the quarry workforce appears likely.

At this point, built by slaves is grasping at straws. Partial credit I suppose, but not how MJ is imagining it. It's at a point where you can give credit for slave labor because one of the managers must have had a slave servant so therefore built by slaves.
Even if it was built by slaves, that doesn't mean you can't admire the monument or be proud of what it was meant to symbolize. We admire all sorts of other structures absolutely built by slaves without batting an eye.

The Washington Monument was constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. For one thing, slavery was never that big in D.C. even before the Emancipation Proclamation, with a few notable exceptions. For another, why would you use unskilled labor for a project that depended largely on donations? It's not like they could afford any fuck ups. >Went in expecting 3/10 meme trash
>It was actually an 8/10 movie

The only problems I had with this movie were:
>Flash Thompson and the nameless crew being complete fags
>MacGargon not being an undercover FBI agent
>Spidey not throwing enough punches
>Too much humor being thrown into some dramatic scenes

I was pretty happy they didn't go the usual Marvel movie route and off the main villain. It feels pretty cheap when they remove a looming threat that could be utilized better in a future installment.

amazing spider-man had the whole fighting thing down to the extent that it was literally perfect. why not give the audiences more of the same?
>>
>>93719069
Yeah, despite the issues with ASM1/2 I gotta say fights like the ones with Lizardman were fucking great
>>
>>93719076

I feel as if people give the ASM movies way too little recognition in general. the only weakspots in those movies (in my eyes only in ASM2 since I really liked the first one) were story elements.

if they had gotten a decent writer in order to improve story as well as dialogues and kept the visual effects, especially the fighting and spidey shit talk, that could have been an awesome franchise
>>
>>93719114
Yeah mate the issue is having a bunch of story problems really fucks up the movie. It's a BIG weakspot, big enough to fuck up the franchise.

I liked Garfield (particularly in-suit, he made a great spider-man). Most the characters were pretty decent actually. The action scenes (outside of the web-hand bit with Gwen which was cheesy as fuck) were all very good.
>>

>outside of the web-hand bit with Gwen which was cheesy as fuck

what is up with people shitting over that scene anyway? it's campy as fuck but why not? the old spider-man movies were far more campy but suddenly people hate cheesyness and camp? everything has to be realistic to the point that nobody can accept moments like that anymore?

The thing that breaks my heart is that the DCEU villains have been worse on average than the MCU villains.

It's not the same scene, the similarity is almost entirely visual. The emotional undertone of it is entirely different because the character arcs are different.

In the movie this moment is where he realizes that he relies on and admires others too much. He's Spider-man. He can be his own hero.

They even decided that it was too subtle so they added another scene of him turning down a position with the avengers and a proto-iron spider suit to really drive the arc home.

Honestly, I felt it was better they didn't mention him or it'd go full cheese. I liked it better that they danced around him because that's how it'd really go. You don't just drop recently deceased people's names like that.

Actually, Uncle Ben was there. You see it the whole movie where Peter would choose responsibility over anything.

>Aunt May already knows
Why not? It's not a show anyways. The next Spidey movie is past Infinity War so a ton of shit could happen. Timeskip and all. They're tired of the whole dance that every movie does for false tension

I found MJ fine if you think of her as an OC stalker love interest. I mean, why not? Adventures had Chat. Better to just not retread stuff when they've already changed the trek of normal spidey anyways.

I think one thing I really liked about this movie was that it had Peter doing heroic stuff mainly for himself, instead of only doing it for uncle Ben. He also trying to get recognized by Tony as a worthy hero to go big time but then realizes he doesn't need fame to do the right thing. Basically, they made Peter self motivated instead of always brooding about Ben and May.

>>
>>93721034

>>
>>93721050
he literally goes from being a spider-boy to becoming a spider-man. it was a really well done scene and it didnt feel overwrought or hammy at all. They just let a little kid panic in an empty, quiet ruin, and then let him build himself back up. No "real heroes of new york" ra-ra bullshit, just the character defining himself.

This was also done well as peter walks out of the dance on liz. The whole time, you wonder if he's going to do the right thing, be a hero, make the hard choice, then when you see he left his phone in the car, he had made the decision ten minutes before, with a gun very nearly literally to his head. Awesome stuff.
>>
>>93721144
Which is why I say you didn't need to mention Uncle Ben because you see it all in Peter's actions already. The way he was so dangerously obsessed with his responsibity as Spiderman was more than enough. There was no news for a "This is what Uncle Ben would have wanted me to do" because you see it in all he does.

Storytelling 101: Show don't tell.

Just watched it. Here's my useless opinion.

Pros:
>Helland and Keaton gave fantastic performances. Helland plays a great kid Spiderman who's in over his head as a hero, while Keaton does a great job of a guy who's just doing what he can to survive.
>Ned is surprisingly funny
>Good humour all around really God tier Chris Evans cameos
>Aunt May was endearing (MILF jokes wore a little thin though)

Cons:
>Mediocre action. Only decent fight was on the ferry, and that was ruined by Pete's suit doing too much for him
>That "MJ" reveal. If she looks nothing like the original and doesn't act anything like the original, why bother calling her MJ? Ned works as an original character, I'm sure Michelle could have too.
>Rubble scene just didn't hold the weight of "If this be my destiny." The point of the original scene is that it symbolises Peter making the choice between an easy death and a hard life. Scene was still pretty decent though with him panicking before manning up.
>Why is Flash shorter than Peter
>Washington trip felt unnecessary to the plot. He really just discovers that the Vulture crew is stealing from the Department of Damage Control. That's should be 5 minute exposition at best.
>Dong Lover's scene felt unncessary too
>Final Avengers scene felt forced
>Liz was really flat and they had no chemistry. Peter had no reason to like her other than she was hot.

Overall, 6/10. Better than ASM1&2 and SM 3, worse than SM2. About the same as SM1

On one hand, I find it irritatingly stupid that people are comparing the Destiny panel of the scene of the movie when they both meant different things and had different contexts.

So I can't really blame anyone even though it does annoy me.

It's BECAUSE he was stealing the alien tech. You could safely assume his financial status shot up since eight years ago and the mansion was a relatively new thing.
>>
>>93721465
Yeah, but then it would mean his motivation for doing all this crime now has changed from survival to greed, a significantly weaker insentive to do all this risky crime.

Especially when he knew Iron Man and FBI and shit was on his ass.
>>
>>93721465
I know I know but sounds to me that instead of buying a fuckhuge mansion he should have invested that.
>>
>>93721369
A good point. I think I dislike it for the same reason I dislike "MJ," if you're going to make something new, why bother doing the nod to reference material? Meta-wise it just makes people think you fucked up.

>>93721396
I know this is a joke, but the whole Liz Allen thing actually annoys me a decent amount. I does matter for good storytelling purposes. Relationships define characters, and having flat/shallow relationships ruins them. In the original trilogy, Peter connects with MJ because he understands the pain she goes through in her family life (and she leaves her curtains open). In ASM, Peter connects with Gwen because she sticks up for him and appreciates him for his sensitivity. In Homecoming, Peter just seems to have the hots for Liz and she likes him back despite apparently never having talked to him much. It just feels hollow and forced.
>>
>>93721465
You really can't. He also doesn't get money from stealing alien tech. He gets it from reselling it as weapons which one could argue is worse. I mean, if someone just payed him to steal for them, it's wrong but one could argue it is just his job.

Also, sure he got fucked over from the investment but he most likely already made that back in two years tops. Why can't he go back to normal scrap work? It's not like the market has changed considering Damage Control has monopoly on alien tech anyways.

How could anyone assume that shit is new?
>>
>>93721506
>I know this is a joke
It's only sort of a joke.
Attractiveness isn't always a make-or-break but it most certainly is the easiest way to get someones attention.
In the future maybe nuMJ will usurp that attention, or maybe Liz will reveal there is a personality hidden there, or maybe it's just shit. Could be anything. But the idea that Peter wouldn't be interested in her because she's not deep or anything is a bit silly.
>>
>>93721487
Dude just wants the best for his family. Iron Man and FBI didn't know shit until Peter told Tony.

>>93721506
>in Homecoming Peter just seems to have the hots for Liz
I feel guys in high school don't need any more of a reason than that.
>>
>>93721506
>if you're going to make something new, why bother doing the nod to reference material?
Honestly, that's probably the sum of the average complaints of this movie. Why use Ned, Flash, MJ, Aunt May, etc. when you change them so radically?

But we both know that people will very much yell and rant about "NOT MUH" and on them using OCs anyways.

Worse is that the characters were decent in their roles. You could've changed their names and nothing would really change. Not Flash bullies Peter. Not Ned is his BFF. Etc. Besides Aunt May perhaps.
>>
>>93721548
Yeah, Vulture, i wouldn't say because he was a blue collar guy but because he was a family man. You can't deny that at least.

Also, he was a pretty good boss. I don't know any boss who would take talk from a subordinate like Shocker 1.0 and not be angered.
>>
>>93721533
>>93721548
Yea, not saying it doesn't make sense that he would just like her because she gives him a boner, just saying that from a storytelling viewpoint, a pure physical attraction does not good characterisation make. Peter's attraction to MJ after seeing her family life connects them as outcasts, which helps the Tobey Maguire Spiderman feel of his life sucking constantly. Peter's attraction to Gwen Stacey for her standing up for him and her intelligence, helps to characterise Garfield's Spiderman as more assertive and more science focused. Peter's attraction to Liz doesn't say anything about Helland's Spiderman, she's really just a plot device for them.

>>93721561
Yea, they were all pretty good in their roles, just that there was no point for them to have those names.

I think it highlights the big disconnect that traditional fans have with the general viewing public when viewing comic book movies. We wait all this time for our favourite characters to show up on the big screen, and we get something completely different but with the same name. Even if what they gave us is of a good quality, its still not what we ordered and it ends up stinging a little.
