There's something that always bothered me about J'onn. Why does he keep that semi-human form. It's not really for blending in, and it's not his natural form so why bother keeping it. Is that explained in the comics somewhere? It seems like he'd be more comfortable in his martian form. Is it some kind of martian taboo, like walking around naked in front of strangers?

Partly, it's this >>93690883, but also because he tries to look like what a traditional superhero looks like. It's pretty much him trying to invoke Superman, and try to garner the same positive vibes that he gets from the people of Earth. Aliens usually aren't friendly in the DC universe, with very few exceptions, and J'onn wants people to believe in him as their protector and hero rather than invoking fear. It's his new home and he wants to defend its people. Making himself look like one of their beloved heroes instead of a creepy gangly alien helps with that.

Part of J'onn's character is that he has a much harder time adjusting to life on Earth than Superman. Superman never knew any other life before Earth and looks completely human. J'onn has to adjust to a completely new planetary culture and try to convince the human population that he's not just another alien invader. J'onn has also gone through emo phases where he loses faith in people and tries to reconnect with his Martian heritage by looking more alien. This is usually after he encounters other Martians like his twin brother Malefic or D'kay. That's why sometimes his features are a little more alien like his head being enlongated or having strange alien ridges; especially in the New 52.

I could list "why doesn't x just y like z" for days in comics. It's called plot induced stupidity and it's done because comic books are about telling a story not rigidly adhering to logic. Often police or licensed bounty hunters, which were seen as heroes in the wild west for hunting down the worst of the worst, often with more judicatory/legal freedom then a typical town sheriff as they often chased people cross state borders more like the FBI does.

It makes sense that that such a heroic name would later be reused for early comic books. I mean Zorro and other wild west things were very popular when the writes were little kids.

In one Gardner Fox Justice League issue the soviets and Americans lob all their nukes at each other and Hal stops all the missiles in an instant (this scene was what Frank Millar was referencing with Hal's appearance in DKR2).

So Silver Age Hal was better than Dr. Manhattan.

Nowadays a lantern can barely move a planet. Back in the day they were arguably more powerful than even Superman.

If i remember he could not phase out because the pain effected his focus. So one of the other heroes start trash talking to the point Brainac stopped electrocuting/assimilating them to trash talk back giving him a chance to phase out.
