Claremont had no real plans for Nightcrawler's backstory until he had to come up with a way to retcon Mystique into the X-Men franchise as a villain.

So he wanted to make Mystique Kurt's biological father and Destiny his mother, in recycling his original plans for Rogue being Raven and Irene's baby via Raven being a hermaprhodite. A plotline Claremont had vetoed by Shooter because of Shooter's no-gay policy.

Claremont kept pushing however, a paternal connection between the two but it was Scott Lobdell that ultimately did the story making Raven Nightcrawler's mom and his dad some random German baron.

Chuck Austen made Kurt's dad an External mutant who looks like Satan that cucked Mystique's husband, because of two reasons:

1. Chuck originally wanted a plotline where it was revealed that Magneto fucked a LOT of women and that a good chunk of X-Villains were ALL MAgneto's kids. So he recycled this with Nightcrawler's dad being the dad of AOA villain Abyss and countless other unnamed mutants out in the world

2. Chuck Austen REALLY REALLY hates organized religion and wanted a storyline where Kurt fought a fake Satan to show off his atheist street cred

Furthermore, for added shitting on Claremont, Austen also DE-AGED Nightcrawler to 18 years old in the Draco and tried his best to try and get Marvel to let him reveal that Kurt has TWO penises (thankfully Marvel vetoed that plotline)
