Why do people on here whine about comic book companies targeting people who don't buy comics when the only way the industry can sustain itself is to convert non-comic readers into customers?

Alienating your core audience is never a good idea. If they really wanted to attract people to comics they'd make them
A) more accessible.
B) cheaper
C) filled with more content.
Ideally they'd find a way to attract new readership without abandoning (and in a lot of cases shitting on) their established readership
There are also business practices that make the concept of new readership an uphill climb. Comic book stores are more 'threatening' of a place to get them then the grocery store or online, Diamond's monopoly discourages innovation and competition, and in general issue prices are considered too high

That's what always concerned me. Wouldn't it be easier to sell comics in grocery stores? I've never seen anything but Archie comics in grocery stores and that's an easy way to expand the market
>>93648333
Because Blue Ocean strategies are rarely successful
>>93648525
That's because Diamond has a monopoly on comic distribution.
I don't know how exactly, but they're pretty much the only way to get your comics out.

A publisher has to buy back all the unsold copies of their publications in the newsstand (grocery store) market.
Archie sells enough that they can handle the refunds. Other comic publishers wouldn't be able to survive.

don't newstands/grocery stores have different return policies for unsold copies compared to comic book stores?
at least that's what i keep encountering in these types of discussions about broader market approach.

>Archie sells enough that they can handle the refunds
... No shit? I've never seen anyone buy one, and I know I haven't, but I constantly see it around. So it's kind of jarring to read that.
>>93648333
Because of how blatant and forced it is. Making established characters completely different on the off chance that some outlier will read about it on Twitter and maybe MAYBE if the stars align correctly will pick up the comic.
However those people don't read comics or at least don't read them for long. So you lose all your new audience.
BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE!
In addition you chased off your core fans by changing everything they enjoyed and writing cringeworthy scenarios to shove the new abominations into.
So you lose fans and the medium as an art and storytelling platform suffers for it.

Yeah, they tear off the covers and sell them back or something, while Comic Shops will put them in the discount bin.
>>93648731
It is generally required for magazines that you must tear off the cover, scan the barcode to count it, and then destroy the rest of the magazine. My old inventory guy would dump bleach on them before tossing them in the dumpster cause hobos would loot around for the playboys and jack off behind the buildings.
Most places that carry comics have room devoted for back issues. If there is an issue you usually send back the entire copy or just hang on to them and they replace them.
>we need to turn non-readers into readers
No one disagrees. Trades have done the most to make this a reality, but those people don't tend to also get into floppies.
>we need to specifically pander to this one group of people that we've repeatedly been attempting to pander to with no success
No. Take the hint. Pandering to the movie crowds would make more sense.

somehow that works for actual porn material.
