Somewhere along the line Rick turned into an unstoppable Mary Sue, maybe he was one the whole time. Hell, he destroyed the government and a whole Citadel full of alternate versions of himself, the only people who could possibly match him.
There's some hope for Evil Morty but what can do to such a godly person, he's just a morty.

in season 1 he outright says "well I can't cure death" in someone who died mere moments ago but in season three he completely decimates both of his enemies incredibly casually. Plus Jerry got shot to death in season 2 which was the same as "getting a splinter removed" in a hospital. Different to a garage bu still. Something has definitely changed as the show went on

The main problem with the show IMHO is that they threw out the character development of season 1 just so they could keep the same character dynamics for season 2. Nothing will ever change because the writers can't be bothered to alter the characters from their original conceptions.
