Dear family,
I am an utter failure, and you'll be better off without me. By the time you read this, I will be in my watery grave. I can only leave you with the words my father gave me, "Stand tall, have courage, and never give up." I only hope I can provide a better model in death than I did in life.
Warmest regards...Love,
Homer J. Simpson
Man those early episodes really went in too hard on the morality.
There used to be a lot of heart in this show. Hell, just putting your main character through suicide in the first season takes balls.
What's the context behind this?

Homer got fired.

That's a weird way to hold a pen

Damn. That's pretty heavy duty.

Now when Homer gets fired, he goes to his new wacky job of the episode before returning to the Nuclear Power Plant.

Homer getting fired is such a common, throwaway gag nowadays that it's strange to think he once became suicidal over it. Though, to be fair, this is the first time it happened. I guess he just got used to it.

It's also that we got used to it. Being stuck with Homer at the same work would really limit the show.
