Today, the X-Men are 54.

The X-Men are dead.
Long live the X-Men.

Yes, I am not dead, and yes, I am very, very, /very/ sorry for not being around for so long. This has been a trying year for me.

Now things have slowed down and I'm ready to get back on the saddle.

Speaking of Logan, I really liked it, but I have to agree with Sarah Horrocks that even a movie as good as that still can't touch what BWS or Claremont/Miller did.

I feel like Logan had a bunch of good ideas that never fully came together.

The X-Men in general, both as a group and individuals, lend themselves really well to other genres. It's a shame most people don't realize that. Then again, I've always been a sucker for experimental runs.
>>
>>93605103
He's easier to root for as a protagonist in the comics even when he's in that stage of fucked up. And visually the comics are much more striking.

>>93605125
There were some tonally odd bits and pieces, probably a product of marketing/corporate editing. Or maybe not, otherwise I assume they'd have sequels planned.

Mostly entry-level stuff, but I've enjoyed it a lot so far:
-Fun Home and Are You My Mother?
-Badger
-American Flagg
-Cerebus (really goes off the rails at one point, but it's always a fascinating read)
-By Faith or Providence
-Eightball
-Dork
-Bandette
-Jim Woodring's Frank
-Strangers in Paradise
-March
-Scud: The Disposable Assassin
-Judge Dredd
-Shakara
-The Ballad of Halo Jones
-Zenith
-The Stuff of Legend
-D.R. and Quinch
-This One Summer
-Wonton Soup
-Paradax!

And that's not counting the stuff I already read, which is quite a bit.

It's amazing how the X-Men, when done right, can damn near fit any setting. Magical, Sci-Fi, Mysteries, Comedy, good Drama.

Their just below Spider-Man in story versatility. (IMHO, my Marvel story versatility list is Spidey, X-Men, The Thing, Luke Cage & Iron Fist).

I'm defo biased when I say this, but I think that the idea of having the X-Men do stuff without their costumes has been normalized at such a point that they fit practically every genre even more so than Spidey, who still needs to put on his costume in order for the story to work as a Spider-Man story, and not just a "random schmuck with superpowers" story.

Nah, I'd argue they're Marvel's most versatile property by far because you can put them in almost any genre and it works. Spider-Man doesn't work, for example, as a globetrotting hero or like what Slott has him as and I don't even like it when he starts getting mixed up in mystical or cosmic stuff.

The X-Men don't really have that problem though.

Some fun backstory on Wolverine and the early issues of his series.

Basically Claremont HATED HATED HATED that Marvel wanted to give Wolverine his own ongoing. But he was dead set on not letting anyone else but himself write said ongoing.

So when the order came and Claremont could not cockblock it any further, he EXPLICITLY made the book a garbage book. In particular, the no-costume/Patch persona and the fact that he spent the first year of the book doing God-awful Terry and the Pirates fanfiction with Wolverine as the main character, to try and get fans pissed off so they would not buy the book and basically force Marvel to cancel it.

Sadly, it did well enough and finally Claremont quit it, which in turn led to him pushing the whole "Wolverine becomes a pawn of the Hand" story in UXM to try to get the book canceled. Which failed again, as Bob Harras simply vetoed the story outright.

That's because Claremont was planning to have Wolverine quit the team at the end of Phoenix Saga, having been disillusioned by Xavier's B.S. and being the big loser of the love triangle when Jean was cured of all that crazy Phoenix persona nonsense, after all it was Phoenix and not Jean that liked him, he wasn't supposed to have any reason to stay and there was supposed to be a sad walking off into the sunset scene as text boxes explained how it was the exercised Phoenix persona he loved and not the actual Jean Grey.
I mean, you can practically see the stereotypical Marvel quasi-philosophical dialog about whether love for someone who never really existed is real love or not...
Marvel back then was a little predictable ... mostly.
Honestly, think about it: the Claremont plan was always to replace everyone with Claremont-original characters, He even replace the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants with his own original characters. Wolverine was always on his chopping block.
But Marvel Editorial stepped in to fuck with his story in a dozen different ways, including deciding that Logan was too popular to get rid of.
And this mandate that Wolverine stay on the team in a major role just so there could be a spin-off must have been pure torture for Claremont.
It's almost funny.

Claremont sounds like someone petty.

>he no-costume/Patch persona
Honestly I bet John Buscema loved him for this. By the 80's Buscema was bored to death of superheroes, he's admitted so. It's why he did that one issue of Daredevil with Miller where the never wears the costume and so much Conan and Tarzan

I think it's fair to say that Claremont viewed the success of the X-Men on him, his editors, and the artists. So he looked negatively on the other parts of Marvel coming in and dictating( the creation of X-Factor, Acts of Vengeance, etc. ).

He's admitted when he was wrong, for example he was against both Jean Grey dying and launching The New Mutants. Now he'll say that Shooter was right on both.

You would be petty too if some corporate asshat showed up at the last minute and told you that the story resolution you had been planning, writing, and rewriting for years just so it's perfect and definitive had to be scrapped at the last minute because the fans loved your ideas so much that corporate now wants the writing to allow for spin-offs, no matter how much that fucks your story over.
And they even retconned the ending he made to conform with their mandate bullshit with some Avengers and Fantastic Four stories.
Seriously, his Phoenix Saga is the iconic X-Men story - even despite the ending being fucked with, regarded as a comic must-own classic to this day, and these guys didn't respect him, his characters, or his effort enough to just let him make them mountains of money.
They just couldn't help but to fuck over the goose that laid golden eggs ... and *HE'S* the one who's petty???
