Tumblr webcomics get movies now. WTF?
http://screenrant.com/nimona-movie-2020-release-date/
>>93560931
What the fuck is this retarded hair in a clearly medieval setting?
>>93562887
Might as well complain about Asterix historically too nigga.
Relax, it's fiction.
>>93560931
I don't care if it tumblr as long as it isn't too annoying. I'm just fucking happy a comic got adapted into a cartoon instead of a live action movie. I hope it's aimed at an older audience and does well financially.
>>93560931
I read the first few pages, looks cute.
>>93560931
Minecraft and five nights at Freddie's are getting movies, anything's possible
>>93560931
>fat short chicks with tall skinny men
STOP IT
>>93560931
Wow, this art style makes my eyes hurt.
>>93560931
oh cool, i really liked the story, would be down to see that
>>93560931
What other webcomics would you like to see get adapted?
I personally would love a Gunnerkrigg Court series.
>>93566249
Clt alt del. Just some that scene can be live action
Huh. Considering Fox's other animated stuff, I wonder if they're gonna try animating this in 3d.
Good. Nimona was fucking cash.
>>93560931
this art style is the most unpleasant thing ive ever looked at
>>93568151
It's so Tumblr it hurts, those feet are grounds for execution

Oh no, it's retarded
>>93568769
To be fair a few people among millions doing that is enough to make people worried about their safety. Not that that person is normal but she's using a valid point, misinterpreting it and making it into a crazy crusade against anyone who disagrees.
>>93560931
TUMBLER KNEES
>>93568808
>To be fair a few people among millions doing that is enough to make people worried about their safety.
She doesn't have a valid point. She's a stupid cunt. Women kill people too bro. Just last week my coworker's friend was shot by his ex who he tried to break up with but kept stalking him. And they have other ways to ruin your life. Men have plenty to be afraid of when dealing with a crazy woman.
>>93562887A reason a lot darker than you expected.
>>93560931
What exactly is her webcomic about anyway? Is it good?
I'm so fucking tired of these lazy tumblr styles
>>93568839
>women have no right to be concerned because they can be shitty people too
>men should stfu because some of them are horrible people who stab women
You sound almost exactly like that dumb cunt, with a tiny bit less crazy. Both women and men can be shitty people and it manifests itself the most clearly when strong emotions are involved. On average a woman is far less of a physical threat, so of course men are more likely to physically threaten women. If you think that's not true you're an idiot. But that doesn't mean there's less shitty women, just that there are different ways they cause harm, often less visible. Threat of a shitty man is immediate while the threat of a shitty woman tends to be prolonged.
>>93569009
You're being unreasonable, his point wasn't that one is more or less dangerous than the other, but that you start fearing a large portion of the population irrationally
Just because there are crazies doesn't rationalize her opinion or anyone fearing both genders, it's like when I was 7 and thanks to the news I became nervous whenever I saw a brown man with a backpack on the train
>>93569009
Sometimes I dream of /co/ before tumblr and burst into tears upon waking to this broken timeline.
>>93569114
And I did say that she's crazy, but that it's reasonable to complain that a certain type of crimes tend to happen more. Men have all the right to complain about having their lives ruined because some crazy bitch decided to accuse them of something but at the same time women have the right to be cautious around strangers in some situations because they feel threatened. I didn't say SHE has a valid point, I said that she took a point that is valid and then changed it to fit her own crazy world view.
>>93569139
Me too, and yet somehow I doubt you're making it any better with your presence. Being an edgy angsty 15 year old just to trigger tumblr is making this place far more shit than the people who would come here and then leave otherwise.
>>93569173
>Being an edgy angsty 15 year old just to trigger tumblr
Not sure when I did anything remotely like this, tumblr. You're the tumblr defending a tumblr cunt by pretending she has a valid point, tumblr.
Let's do a storytime. Because people some people have not read it, if your going to hate something you might as well read it.
>>93569185
Calling people tumblr the second anything gender related comes up, which it does way too often for a board about comics and cartoons, is exactly an example of being an edgy 15 year old. Having no reading comprehension helps with the 15 year old part too.
>>93569187
my opinion is just that it's okay and like most Noelle Stevenson stuff, it's pages don't flow well into each other. You can tell this was a webcomic first, not a graphic novel.
>>93566249
Poppy O' Possum
>>93569213
That looks like it could either go mildly amusing way or be a tryhard garbage.
>>93569222
oof I forgot how bad the initial art was.
>>93569209
>proudcuck.jpg
Okay tumblr. You can go back to hating all men now because some men do something that some women also do.
>>93569226
>>93569231
I would not call it tryhard but it does suffer from the common webcomic problem that it does not know how to shift into being dramatic and be effective.
>>93569213
Why is she shaking his right arm with her left arm? Is that a thing?
>>93569248
JUST in case your dumb Blackheart is the real lead in this.
>>93569263
yes the subtext is text this came from Tumblr.
>>93569243
You're not helping your cause of appearing mature, not that I think you're trying to, but either way I've gotten my fill of talking with children for a month thanks to you.
>>93569277
I do like some of the story stuff.
>>93569277
We're just a few pages in and I already like this better than her more famous work. You're right in that it's very static. I'm not sure how it would look in animation.
>>93569286
Where do you think you are?
>>93569296
Now if you think the SCIENCE! is bad now, wait to you see the character who is the embodiment of that later.
both the art and storytelling is dreadful so far
>>93560931
I don't see the problem, why the wtf?
>>93569306
>>93569303
If it makes you feel better this won an Eisner....I'm not sure why either.
>>93569301
Not on /r9k/, reddit, or tumblr. But I think I'm living in the past aren't I?
>>93569296
The writing is a bit weird but it's the start so I hope it gets better, the art looks like it could look neat with some improvements but it's too wonky as is. I can't get over the hair though.
>>93569213
Do they fuck?
>>93569303
>>93569319
and I forgot the image.
>>93569326
>>93569325Blackheart is more into blondes
>>93569306
I kinda dig the art.
But i hate that the blond "prince charming" is the villian of the series. In this context thats just typical "the one that looks good is the bad one" trope.
And why are there >>93569213
>>93569222 modern things but in >>93569263
we see that its medievil.
Besides >>93569277 why does his lance shoot stuff if he uses that for a lance fight.
It really feels a little bit as if a 8 year old made that, which isnt bad in itself, but very random. Even in Adenture Time or Ritter Rost its was like a rule, here its more like "cant think of anyother thing than that"
>>93569338
Okay this page is pretty cool. Then again it's hard to ruin an action sequence.
>>93569357
Another problem with the writing is that you can tell it comes from Tumblr, from the silly nature of interactions, and the fact that this feels like a fanfiction to a story I never read,
Even Tumblr webcomics threads will be turned into capemovie threads.
>>93569370
>>93569377
This webcomic setting might make more sense in a superhero context to be fair with all this medevil science going around.
>>93569277
>gets shot in the left arm
>loses right arm
Wtf is this bullshit?
>>93569366
That's a good description, I couldn't decide how exactly to say that. The question is, does it get better? A lot of stories have a mediocre start so it's forgiveable as long as it improves.
>>93569187
>>93569326
>>93569338
Funny thing is, that tumblr and female artists like to selfinserts.
And make them super powerfull and mary sue
>>93569385
Now let's introduce the main issue with Noelle's work, instant gratification, you know that thing you were worried about? Well don't worry about Danger or suspense I solved everything on one page and if I didn't, it is solved on the next one. I don't want to make people worried. It was the main reason I don't like Lumberjanes.
>>93569416
How is that funny? Most of them are either teenagers or mentally teenagers, and it's what all teenagers do.
>>93569222
How did this mediocre garbage secure a movie deal compared to webcomics like Kill 6 Billion Demons?
Is this another one of those cases where the creator is another Lena Dunham with wealthy connected parents?
>>93569362
It's incredibly easy to ruin an action sequence, since most webcomic artists don't really have the paneling or artistic skill to portray it engagingly. Even good artists have problems with it.
>>93569433
>Is this another one of those cases where the creator is another Lena Dunham with wealthy connected parents?
gee I dunno take a guess
>>93569391
>>93569421
Never noticed that before holy shit.
>>93569358
>But i hate that the blond "prince charming" is the villian of the series
I haven't read the comic in a while, but I think that changes later on, like I remember he became more sympatheticand it's revealed he had feelings for the Blackheart guy
>>93569426
That they make comics about "anti tropes" but in the end use the most common tropes and booster their egos against their life.
Its just human and its like that they rebel against establishment but in the end they are establishment.
>>93569447
here were the eisner's for Nimona's category I will let you all decide if she deserves it or not....fucking can't believe Bandette lost to this.
Bandette, by Paul Tobin & Colleen Coover, Monkeybrain/comiXology.com
Failing Sky by Dax Tran-Caffee, http://failingsky.com
The Last Mechanical Monster, by Brian Fies, http://lastmechanicalmonster.blogspot.com
Nimona, by Noelle Stephenson, http://gingerhaze.com/nimona/comic
The Private Eye by Brian Vaughan & Marcos Martin http://panelsyndicate.com/
>>93569438
Then it's not an action sequence, it's a failed action sequence. I guess what I should've said that it's hard to ruin a page with mostly action on it drawn in a style that transfers movement well. The art is wonky but it does that well.
>>93569433
K6BD would be far too expensive to animate well and it's not safe for enough audiences.
>>93569475
Now this this is where things change, this webcomic got a book deal, and now we are at the part where this webcomic becomes a graphic novel, let's see how it weather's that storm.
>>93569472
When you put it like that it is a little. Though I'd say its more hypocritical than funny seeing how they often act all high and mighty about it.
>>93569433
>Kill 6 Billion Demons
KSBD is utter fucking insanity and would never see the light of day in Hollywood or any major animation studio unless some auteur took it under their wing. Getting movie deals is a combination of making enough of a splash to generate interest, putting yourself out there, and whomever is watching thinking it's worth enough of a go to actually bite. Nimona is weird, but it's more "quirky medieval adventures with a slight science twist" than "like something out of the Bhagavad Gita but intentionally more crazy." Not to mention it's got that nice marketable "indie woman author and Eisner win" thing going for it.
>>93569433
>>93569439
Because she did good promoting.
She has an agent, some awards and with Lumberjane a well known series in the biz.
And worked with marvel and disney.
She had overall luck and good conections.
Which is ok, since it seems she also worked for that luck.
>>93569510
If it seems like I've very crtical, keep in mind I like a lot about Nimona it's just it's flaws are huge. If I get a chance I will storytime a webcomic I really hate.
>>93569513
>>93569515
this is a 254 page thing so be careful when posting images guys.
Sure are a lot of butt hurt anons with no movie deals in this thread.
>>93569421
Good point.
It seems like she thinks in absolutes and order. So she tries to solve anything to be on track and dont forget something.
And i guess its like webcomics try to be more one-liner traditional, because it could suddenly ends. So she use what she trained or is used to.
>>93569510
So why doesn't he ditch her or give her to the guards? She seems to be out of control and causing a lot of damage and has absolutely nothing going for her besides being quirky, which I wouldn't exactly call a virtue or a reason to keep her around. Annoying friend who constantly messes things up is very rarely a good thing, more often than not they're the worst and most annoying character in a series and this one isn't even his friend, she just tags along.
>>93569358
>But i hate that the blond "prince charming" is the villian of the series. In this context thats just typical "the one that looks good is the bad one" trope.
I'm expecting a tilt where they're gay lovers.
>>93569321
If you're going to play the oldfag card, you might as well go all the way back to /co/ is love. Even when they're being precocious children.
>>93569362
The same author blows a whole lot of action sequences in Lumberjanes.
>>93569319
I didn't read the other contenders.
Best Graphic Album—Reprint
Nimona, by Noelle Stevenson (Harper Teen)
Angry Youth Comics, by Johnny Ryan (Fantagraphics)
Roses in December: A Story of Love and Alzheimer’s, by Tom Batiuk and Chuck Ayers (Kent State University Press)
The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal Omnibus, by E. K. Weaver (Iron Circus Comics)
Soldier’s Heart: The Campaign to Understand My WWII Veteran Father, by Carol Tyler (Fantagraphics)
>>93569488
Well technically you probably could do it with a animated Disney movie budget and enough whipped South Koreans, but I get the point as it would be infinitely cheaper and faster to animate something that already looks like trash
Also I do indeed see the problem with introducing to the general audience a character that consorts with legitimately amoral devils
>>93569456
Ok, hope so.
>>93569475
>>93569564
Wait, so which one is the actual set of nominations? Was it up for two years or something?
>>93569515
>Lumberjanes
I knew I recognised that name! I read the first 8 issues of that comic when it was storytimed on /co/ a while back... Biggest waste of my time in quite a while.

>>93569515
She looks like Lena Dunham too
>>93569634
>>93569623it's a lie
>>93569623
They're medieval inspired so maybe they can't read or would just refuse to listen to a dragon. Plus they probably blame the dragon for her disappearance.
>>93569651
we've gone over this already, it's not medieval inspired if they've got huge-ass TV screens and refridgerators
>>93569634
Is there a reason why the raiders suddenly decided to kill everyone?
>>93569663
That exactly what it is though, inspired stylistically by medieval times. Just because it does little beyond affecting designs doesn't mean it's not.
>>93569663
>>93569667
I call the setting Tumblr medieval because the style has been so over used in this sphere of books, want to look medieval but still make references to cell phones and be inclusive to everyone and not worry about historical accuracy?
>>93569668

>>93569745
Now let's talk about writing.
>>93569512
I know,
Its sometimes like they preach wine, but in the end cook with water.
They should be more down to earth.
>>93569731
Probably where that Eisner award comes from as well, doesn't take much time to learn that all such prestige awards are about who you know and the current zeitgeist
>>93569756
going from comedy to drama is possible.
>>93569769
Deadpool despite his meme nature has been able to that pretty well under a lot of different writers and has some very good stories attached to him.
>>93569533
I question, if Noelle Stevenson has some inferior complex and/or some daddy/supervisor issues?
>>93569785
but here's where your going to see this comic fail at, when we get to the really dark moments, you are going to see something in the next page or panel that will undercut what just happened. And prove very much why we teach people about tone and story structure.
>>93569785

>>93569591
>>93569578
So Nimona is a magical girl?
>>93569735
how did she find out that she couldn't turn into something inanimate??? what?
>>93569764
It wouldn't even be that bad if it wasn't for that. They draw their comics, which are usually painfully mediocre, and nobody would care if they didn't demand attention and respect based on the fact that they're somehow progressive according to them and bash anything that doesn't follow their personal idea of progressiveness.
>>93569768
oh, 100%. There is a clear in crowd for the Eisners.
Easy to correlate books shilled by comics alliance, and their friendlists, and Eisner noms/wins.
>>93569817

>>93569854
She said that she'd become inanimate if she did that, which would mean that she couldn't transform back.
>>93569863
She could've tried and felt weird halfway through. You don't need to learn everything from a direct experience, especially when it's something your body does. You can tell when it's not working as intended.
>>93569856
>>93569852
One of my big issues with the comic book scene right now is how defensive everything is. Like we either are trying to defend the medium to normal people or artists are trying to dodge criticism by saying there work in innovative in some way or silencing that criticism. Right now everything feels on edge.
>>93569885
>>93569863
>>93569881
I'm just going to tell you guys now don't worry about it.
>>93569698
You could go
Its a take of what if medievil is like our timr
But i guess its just that she only can write about her life/time so she transported our world into medievil, because she doesnt research. Hence this many fable and medievil cliches.
And i guess she likes Flintstone and adventure time. But forgets to use it as a metaphor on today society.
>>93569852
I can't think of any other way that Squirrel Girl can pick up multiple eisner nominations the way it has.
>It's medieval inspired!
As someone who happens to have studied a shitload of medieval art for the sake of emulating it
No, man, this ain't medieval. Berserk is medieval, that's heavily inspired by hieronymus bosch. Those elric comics are medieval, moebius is medieval, they're byzantine as fuck. Samurai jack is medieval with the highly stylized and baroque posing.
Fucking megg mogg and owl is more medieval than this because those at least capture some of the goofy nature of medieval people trying to draw things with no good frame of reference for them, mogg is practically one of those medievsl cats that look hilariously off model.
This shit is neo nordic at best. And even then it's a crummy aping of superficial stylings since it doesn't even have the iconic patterning.
>>93566249
Unsounded.
Will be weird because apparently the creator is english and I read everything in a Southern accent but I think it'll be worth it.

There was a prize show too.

The chick is like confused as hell and is trying to make him a real villain. The blond guy is a beloved hero who is defending the establishment and is a dick who betrayed the black haired guy when both were training to be heroes together and more so follows the establishment because hes naive and thinks its good and to protect his own position in society.
>>93570613
It's a character who is basically I FUCKING LOVE SCIENCE. this Character is important and I can't help....but cringe when they show up
>>93570608
It seems decent, but not particularly fascinating. Good to read in a webcomic format where you read a page every few days and then forget about it.
Nimonas not that bad on a tumblr scale.
it does get a bit bluntly tumblr by the end.
Her other work is much worse though
>>93570684
by the way remember when I said this was 254 pages well there was also the extra content....I'm already into too deep.
>>93560931
As a webcomic it's okay more or less - best thing I can say about it is that the author knew how to pace it right and it actually had an end. The story is forgettable but okay but the art is awful and there's like zero world building.
As a movie it could be pretty cool though - American animated movie stories tends to be pretty bland and Nimona's story would stand out as somewhat more interesting than the norm. Plus having a professional hollywood art crew might actually make it look good.
>>93570475

What buyout?
>>93570553
Good point
>>93570746
Comics Alliance was bought by Screen Crush which killed the content in a lot of ways.

it was already not in good shape, because while I don't like her that much Laura Hudson was a great editor and got some damn good stuff on there.

I was going to say that this is childish and unrealistic, but I know people who act somewhat similar though less violent. But I agree, I fail to see anything likeable about her.
>>93570832
>>93570809
Let me put it this way she is really the true villain of the story but the author bless her heart, tries to go back on that a little because of one aspect I will talk about later.

Heh, one of the first webcomics that I ever read and finished. Loved it for what it is; didn't mind the Quentin Blake-wannabe art when the premise clearly tries to be so anachronistic.
>>93566249
I'd like to have Paranatural faithfully adapted - one episode encompassing one chapter - had its story structure been so steady and solid all the way like its first 3 chapters...but alas.
Chapter 4 and beyond really needs to get heavily rehauled for this to work, at least to keep the suspense going for, say, a 25-ish episode miniseries. Limit the subplots viable for each chapter, something like that. Gotta say goodbye to the blatant anime shoutouts though (because Japanese copyright laws).I'm thinking of writing a "So You Wanna Adapt Paranatural for TV" consideration / rough outline thing from this, maybe have it circulate online and gain people's interest, because I'm a mad loon. Helps flex my writing muscles too.

Still trying to know how Fox saw this and thought "yeah it will make money". Lumberjanes is the same lowkey stuff. Needs a good rewrite and even then they could just start their own IP.
>>93571055
No, they should follow their own demands that people should not be told what to like or forced things they don't like because of the creators values. That's what they claim they want yet they turn it around and do the same. What they create is not the issue, it's that they demand everyone follows their values, and only theirs. Which in turn makes people attack their comics and art.
>>93570990
>>93571096
>>93571105
We never find out what her deal is. So the reveal comes off as more "huh?" than actually anything big or important. We don't even really know what the importance or what it really says about the character.

Yep. would be better for them and they would feel more happiness without lying to themselves, limiting their own

It's fine but we never see the bigger picture or how it connect with Nimona, so to me it comes off as it was not really thought through.
>>93571108
>>93571162
There was so much heat on Stevenson and Nimona that it not getting optioned would've been far more baffling.
Options happen all the time. They're often used for no other reason than to keep other studios from mining potential comic properties. And they're given at all levels of comics. To no-name indies you'll never hear of to titles you can't seem to escape.
Far more interesting to me is that they fast-tracked this and skipped development hell entirely. As far as page to screen transitions go for animated projects, this is one of the shortest by far in the US. Someone really believes in this property.

Games of Thrones does this frombook to book too.
Besides i think that Nimona is a dragon that tries to be a human.

Guess artistic evolution?
Or some design flaw coming with drawing Nimona more detailed and so all have to grow zo keep Nimona short?
