The Dark Knight Joker wouldn't have had a Harley Quinn.
I don't like Letto's tryhard joker either, but they needed to go in a different direction from the "homeless guy in grease paint" Joker since that extreme version of him has no potential future.

Leto's joker wasn't great but I'd honestly like to see him in a more "straight" movie. Joker is one of the only villains I see as being too ridiculous to be put in a ridiculous situation (like Skwad).

Though I highly resent when people act like the Ledger/Nolan "Jokers wild" rather than "comedian joker" is inherently better (or worse, those people suck too.)

It's a character that has and should change to fit the story he's in. Personally, I would prefer something more like a mix between Leto and Nicholson (more mob-ish and stylish) and comedian based than the he's the wildcard type who doesn't care about his appearance. Even if I appreciate and enjoy Ledgers performance the most. He just fucking oozed confidence in that performance which I love.
