What does /co/ think of Homestuck? I read it last year during

Homestuck was a mistake.

Homestuck was ambitious. It was stylish. It went off the rails. First in a good way. Then in a very very bad way. It went in directions that turned off loyal Hussie fans and pandered to a strange and awful influx of 16 year old shippers and cosplayers. It jerked around readers with its hiatus-ridden update schedule and waylayed side-projects. It completely lost control, and though it dipped its head deep into the feedback of tumblrkin (not just throwing around the buzzword; it was huge in tumblr long before tumblr was huge), it never lost its charm. It was, after all, a concept built on the concept of fan input. What was it to when the fans became... awful?

It was a webcomic. Take it for all and all, I shall never see its like again.

Hussie went in over his head, and it really shows by the last few acts. Problem Sleuth was better.

It was interesting but I never finished it. The fact that I was reading it so long after its heyday probably helped me not feel that invested, that and there were lots of stuff I didn't understand.

It's an albatross around my neck. I started reading MSPA with Problem Sleuth, went straight into Homestuck after that ended, and loved it without reserve for like a year and a half, recommended it to anyone in market for that sort of thing. Then it became a weird little comic that liked, but had it's share of issues. Then it was a guilty pleasure. Then it was chore that I hid.

Now it's like having a fucking alcohol addiction. I was too deep in to quit, and even now that it's over I know that I won't be able resist if it comes back, to just say good bye to those years, those literally hundreds of hours I spent trying to get to the end of this fucking thing. And I feel honest to God shame shame that this is a part of my life, and that can't excise it.

I always had a feeling that Hussie wanted Homestuck to be a more ambitious, even more experimental Problem Sleuth but never in his autism-rattled brain did he anticipate the massive fangirl surge that would be act 5. That would spell the downfall for any integrity the comic's plot had up to that point.

Some time ago he claimed that he had the ending of Homestuck planned out before he started the first page, but that's obviously bullshit. At the very least he had it storyboarded or a vague idea. He couldn't even really make fun of his fanbase effectively because they were too stupid to realize when a joke was being played on them.

Homestuck had promise. Now it's just an excuse for butter golems to smear grey paint on their flabby bodies.

I liked it up until the trolls became major characters, enough to actually buy a Dave Strider broken record shirt. I gradually lost motivation to keep reading as the trolls stole more and more of the spotlight and as the chatlogs got longer and longer, until I finally dropped it completely around the first appearance of trickster mode.

Everything I know about it past that point is completely second-hand from scrolling past threads about it here on /co/, and everything I read about it makes me glad I dropped it.

i invested my entire life into homestuck for like 3 years, it wasn't just the comic itself really. i met so many people, made so many friends, got into a major relationship because of homestuck. i was acccepted into friend circles and communities, my artwork was noticed and i found some minimal purpose/reason to get better at almost everything i set out to achieve. shit, homestuck helped me stick with and graduate college.

looking back, in some ways it wasn't as great as i thought it was. but it's existence definitely made me a better person.

I never really got the fuss over it. Granted, my main experience was seeing threads on /co/ which were always wildly incoherent. I tried checking the site a few times and couldn't make sense of it so I just left it alone. I think Andrew did have the basic plot planned out in advance. What things Andrew had planned were the mechanics of Sburb and that the ultimate end was creating a new universe. What he didn't have planned were the characters that participate in this story.

Look at Andrew as a DM. Who really writes the story in a campaign? Is it the DM who sets up the scenery, events, and broad strokes of the story, or the players who control actors in the story and react to the things that the DM comes up with?

I get the impression that Hussie wanted the whole story to be a self-referential mobius double reach around. You see it with the exiles and the ectobabies.

But by the time the dream bubbles and troll ancestors and Cherubs come around, the whole structure starts to crumble, it loses its symmetry, instead of being a snake eating its own tail, it's just open ended.
Hussie kept all the plates spinning before that because they were balanced and symmetrical, but the story lost its shape after that. That's why the end was such an enormous let down: the plot had already fizzled out when the symmetry and time travel feedback loops were lost.

Can I be honest with you for a second? I was let down by the fact that she turned out to act and speak exactly like Meenah. I didn't like Meenah herself at first, either, but I warmed up to her over time. Scratch described the Condesce as someone with a very cordial personality that masks her true nature, and her message to Dave as "Betty Crocker" reflected this (unless that was just a company employee typing?). But what we got was just more embarrassing, possibly racist jive written by a white dude who doesn't seem to know many black people. "Teens like Nicki Minaj, right? I have a great idea!"
