Hickman is the best writer to have graced the pages of a Marvel book.

His FF-Avengers-Secret Wars saga is the golden era of modern comics.
>>
>>93534048
well then he probably shouldn't have kept sending his shitty scripts to movie people just because he was accidentally copied their contact details

and he might still have a job

I really enjoyed it too but I think /co/ doesn't like Avengers/Secret Wars because they're basically all a big FF story.

>co/ doesn't like Avengers/Secret Wars because they're basically all a big FF story.
Oh, enough of this fucking bullshit, alright?

First of all, even if this was the truth, it would be a good reason to dislike it because “Avengers” should be about the fucking Avengers, while during Hickman’s run they were secondary players to his big game of poorly characterized foggy god beings.

Second: A Fantastic Four story should be about the Fantastic Four. Reed, Susan, Ben, Johnny. They’re the Fantastic Four, they’re the family. Reed is the only one with a constant presence through it. In Secret Wars, Johnny has no role, Ben spends half of the event sitting on his ass and the other half being blown to bits, and Susan is reduced to Doom’s cocksleeve, the moral centre and heart of the Four is nothing but a prize to be won and the end of the whole thing, with nothing to do except standing around looking sad.
The rest is nothing but Doomwank, and that doesn’t count as a Fantastic Four story, because the good Fantastic Four stories weren’t about Doom, they were about the four of them being a family and doing fantastic shit together.
>>
>>93535134
At the end of the day the story revolved around Mr and Mrs Fantastic and Doom. It's a little silly to say it wasn't a big FF story because it doesn't fit your exact parameters of what a FF story should be
>>
>>93535194
He's not wrong though, that's like saying a shitty Avengers story was actually a X-Men story but only Scott, Logan and Magneto get something to do.
>>
>>93535194
>revolved around Mrs. Fantastic
she was a prop at best, the plot in no way revolved around her.

At best it was a Doom story, and Reed was also there because Hickman wasn't nearly as creative with this run as people give him credit for.
>>
>>93535194
This. A Fantastic Four story isn't exactly what you want it to so it's not a Fantastic Four story?
>>
>>93535288
>A Fantastic Four story isn't exactly what you want it to so it's not a Fantastic Four story?

A Fantastic Four story isn't a Fantastic Four story if you can replace Johnny Storm with a lightbulb, Susan with a blow up doll and Benjiamin with Rockslide and have nothing in the plot change.
>>
>>93535223
That would still be an X-Men story to me though
>>
A lot of terrible, but also a lot of great.

t. I have every first print issue of this from Avengers 1 until Secret Wars... 9? I still need to collect the Fantastic Four + FF though. I've got half the Fantastic Four and no FF. My hype for single issues killed my collection though. A lot of half-collected stories.
>>
>>93535430
Then you're beyond help then.
>>
>>93535511
C'mon now. The Avengers played a part, but they were pawns in a chess game between Reed and Doom.
>>
>>93535682
Yes, and? That still doesn't make it a F4 story. A Reed and Doom story at best, maybe.
>>
>>93534821
>http://www.zippyshare.com/An-On
Wow, thank you anon!
>>
>>93535697
A Reed and Doom story is a Fantastic Four story, Anon. I should hit you with my shoe, for denying such truths. Inshallah.
>>
>>93534821
ah, the superior version
Hickman was alright but he laid the ground work for this legend
>>
>>93534048
hickman was ok but the whole time runs out / sw felt rushed and most of the best elements of it have gone unused or turned to shit after it spawned the shittiest era of marvel
>>
>>93535722
You can't be serious. How is it a Fantastic Four story if Sue, Ben and Johnny don't get to do shit? Are you braindead?
>tripfag
Nevermind.
>>
>>93534093
there may be reason unkown to us as for why he stopped working for marvel, as a casual reader this is what i get:

1. his twitter is ODDLY (for marvel writers) apolitical

2. he isnt a raging SJW like the rest of marvel writers.

To me it seems he simply doesn't fit in nu-marvel. Unlike Remender, who is very much part of the ultra liberal hivemind but who just has a ton of weight in the indie world to survive on his own
>>
>>93535853
:^) Ok then?
>>
>Unlike Remender, who is very much part of the ultra liberal hivemind but who just has a ton of weight in the indie world to survive on his own

Cause Remender is based
>>
Absolutely agree OP.
His New Avengers/Avengers/Infinity stuff is superb & among my favorite comic runs ever.
It's exactly the kind of awesome epic sci-fi wasted on the lesser characters of F4 that should be on the Avengers (not always but more often)

The exception being the brief arc with the Evil Avengers with the terrible Larroca art.
>>
>>93534048
Yes, except it's Remender and his apocalypse saga. Other than that you are completely right
>>
>>93534048
>Golden era of modern comics
With that disaster of a lacklustre ending?
>>
>>93535924
Im a fan of his marvel work and his pre-marvel indie work. But im not much into his recent stuff.
>>
>>93535891
I like his sense of humor on Twitter, the fact that he's self-deprecating and doesn't seem to take himself too seriously.

I didn't care for his obvious and nearly complete lack of interest in the Avengers. His FF run had the things you expect from an FF run, his Avengers run had almost no Avengers elements in it except the six characters from the movie.

I guess that's partly because the FF have more of a set lineup and supporting cast than the Avengers but it didn't feel like an Avengers story the way even something like Ewing's Mighty Avengers did.
>>
>>93535967
>Avengers run with no Avengers elements

One of those books was a completely new take on the Avengers (which indeed was very unlike Avengers) and the other was Illuminati: The Comic

I suspect Hickman has trouble approaching classical superhero archetypes, like its not his thing at all.
>>
>>93534048
Hickman's Bokurano was fucking great
>>
>>93536006
Isn't he a huge Legionfag though? He also seems to be a big New Mutants fan.
>>
>>93534048
I really hope Hickman comes back to Marvel. I have all of his work and it's still the greatest piece he has ever done

Maybe he could do Fantastic Four if hey ever come back
>>
Everyone is saying "its supposed to be an avengers story not fantastic four story" but Reed was a part of the New Avengers team, and Doom was the main bad guy of the story (besides the beyonders) so in the end, it was still an avenger story. Its like if Ironman saved the day at the end, it wouldn't be like hickman made it an iron man story, he was a part of the team.
>>
>>93536023
He developed Sunspot and Cannonball more on his avengers run than all of xforce v1 did on its entire run, so yeah probably. But still those were not "classical" superheroes, but kind of a gen-x version of a laid back super hero.
>>
>>93536744
Bullshit, man.
>>
>>93536804
Which part?

The whole tension subplot among Cable and Prof X in the 90s was that he (cable) had turned Prof X's kiddie x-men into his own child soldier squad. X-force was basically a black ops strike team.

A classical superhero only has a simple agenda; "protect the innocent" or "help people"; not "violently retaliate against those who would oppress and destroy our subrace"
>>
>>93536891
Half of that series didn't really include Cable or black ops shit.
>>
>>93535891
1. he hasn't been a Marvel writer for 2 years; probably longer, as he would have finished most of his scripts probably 3 months minimum before they could be published;

2. he's very much on twitter as you find him in real life: a raging shitbag who talks down to people, tells unfunny, convoluted jokes, and occasional rants at people who don't "get" him.

I'm honestly surprised he never shot up a school, but I guess doing real world shit is hard for some people.
>>
Where's the rest of SHIELD though?
>>
>>93537287
Finished. Marvel won't publish it for some reason. Weaver finished the art like 2 years ago now. Hickman clearly finished the script since I don't think that book was written with the Marvel Method and he's posted pictures of it.

Meaning it's probably like Marvel was using the last two issues of SHIELD to get Hickman to stay on as they wouldn't publish them after he leaves, and Hickman didn't give a fuck and walked.

Either way, the book is if not done then at least almost done and Marvel is holding it up for some reason that probably has to do with Hickman.
>>
What's he even doing nowadays?

Black Monday Murders has like 4 months between each issue

BMM went on a hiatus from like December until April but it looks like it's on a monthly schedule for the forseeable future. Other than that he's still doing East of West and a miniseries called The Dying and the Dead at Image.
>>

>: a raging shitbag who talks down to people, tells unfunny, convoluted jokes, and occasional rants at people who don't "get" him.

id take that a million times over a polics-obsessed sjw like remender or the marvel editors who in addition are either cartoony shills or plain anti-white anti-west nuts

Someone give me a reading order for Hickman? Heard it's a decent place to start reading Avengers, since I never gave a shit about them.
>>
>>93539351
Read Busiek's Avengers, Hackman a shit.
>>
>>93539351
Hickman is a terrible place to start with the Avengers since, as other anons have pointed out, it has very little to do with the actual team. I recommend Kurt Busiek's Avengers Forever, which is both a celebration of the team's history and an excellent way to find which parts of their history you are interested in. Busiek's own Avengers run isn't too shabby either.

Thanks Anons. I probably won't even read them, since I never really liked them and my backlog is miles long. I'll be starting Claremont's X-Men, then idk.
>>
>>93539481
i wouldnt go that far back. older comics read VERY DIFFERENTLY from modern comics. and by modern i mean from 1999+

if you want a claremontesque take on the xmen, read morrison's
or claremont's xmen:the end which in which he takes many morrison-like elements and does things with them
>>

Fuck off faggot, Claremont's first run absolutely holds up.

lol
>>
>>93539960
there is no decompression and there is more exposition. The art is simper, not saying worse, but its significantly less polished for the most part. The tone is a lot more honest, or at least it feels that way to me; less overall sarcasm and cynicism. that what i meant but i guess people here get triggered when one dares to say newer readers may not find that appealing.

That was what i meant, and for someone jusrt starting to read shit, if you read old comics it will basically
>>
>>93540088
>if you read old comics it will basically

it will basically make going from something like excalibur to new x-men in a week a fucking jarring experience
