As a guy who spent a year in insane asylums, Futurama's portayal of one is suprisingly accurate
>>
Why were you in an asylum nigger
>>
>>93475044
I ran away from my house after my mom's boyfriend attacked me and I was too afraid of being separated from my mom so I didn't say I was attacked and the state forced me into one

And yes, my life has always been one huge crock of shit, but at least I get section 8, food stamps and SSI now
>>
Also, I guess, Ask Me Anything about what's it like living in a psych ward

None, the people that were actually crazy were just the violent types and I could see why they're in there. But they weren't the majority.

Ah ok. Was thinking along the lines of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, some of the characters was there of his own free will

No but I got punched in the jaw by a crazy guy when I accidentally bumped into him. And the doctor said I was in the wrong

I'll tell you about all the different girls in the hospital

One southern girl with brown hair who jerked me off in the bathroom

One anorexic girl who would smile at me but never talked

A blonde girl who would wink and wave at me from across the other unit, this was one I regret never having any time with

A cute lil Mexican girl with black hair in a bun, she laughed at all my jokes and was a real sweetie

A girl with curly red hair who would cuddle up with me in the chairs

A chubby girl who would make suggestive comments to me

A Native American girl who would show off her legs and wanted to have sex with me

One of the staff members (counselor) who was always asking if I was married or not

A mom that would sit with me and I'd put my arm around her when we went outside

A girl with light blue eyes that looked like the sky who was kinda crazy but was super cute

A black haired goth girl who was too young for me but would talk to me

A whole girl only table that would flirt with me and wanted me to sit with them but the staff wouldn't let me
>>
When I was committed the juice machine broke and it was total fucking anarchy.

I don't know what they do in burgerland, but in the place I worked we have cameras set up everywhere besides bathrooms for safety purposes, so no way would you get away with having sex. There was a case where a dementia patient sexually assaulted a female patient in their shared room, so co-ed stuff is a big no-no.

dude, if only it was like that. If only. I knew one dude who was in there simply because he said "I will kill your ass" to someone at work. A whole handful of them, the group I attached myself to, were your average housewife who snapped at their husbands for abusing them.

It's literally a collective of homeless people they didn't know what to do with, people sent there to 'learn their place', and people who had a bad day they will never let go because they have insurance.

>A few years ago, I had a psychotic episode and became convinced I was a capeshit character. After the episode faded, I found myself with 30 uninterrupted years of persistent memories of life as a fictional character living primarily in Gotham City. If you're interested, pick my brain.

Basically a girl had very, very strong hallucinations about herself being a citizen in Gotham City. As in, she has 30+ years worth of memories of her existing there and she answers questions people have in the thread.
The weird shit is that she describes things with the kind of detail and honesty that it's honestly a little disturbing. I don't think you can make up this kind of stuff.
Either she's just really, really, really good at worldbuilding and making shit up, or she legitimately had a mental episode that took her to an extremely detailed illusion of Gotham, or something else.

Honestly, just read it. I can't do it justice.
I'm still trying to process what the fuck I just read.

If it helps, she wasn't just a citizen of Gotham but Harley Quinn. She claimed that during her episode, she ended up turning face and gave up so many secrets to the JLA that she brought down dozens of villains; the JLA's form of Witness Protection was to launch her into our universe.

The big kicker was that she learned that our universe isn't even the true Earth Prime. We are a copy of the Earth that is kept unscathed when a Crisis event affects Earth Prime. To paraphrase, whenever some shit goes down on Earth Prime, we're going to be here complaining about it on /co/.

I had a serialized dream once. I remember absolutely nothing of it, other than waking up three days in a row "wondering what would happen next", and getting delivered on that at night. I miss whatever adventure kept me entertained for four nights.
>>
>>93478840
Maybe not to such extremes, but definately. I've slept for like three hours and dreamed at least a full day and night's worth of events in that time before. As a kid I vividly remember dreaming entire schoolday mornings before waking up and being really pissed off it wasn't real and I had to do it all again (this must be common because there's a Calvin and Hobbes strip about it).

I don't even begin to understand how that works, but if we could work it out we'd probably have eternal life in the Matrix. Or at least the slo-mo drug from Dredd.
>>
>>93479014
>As a kid I vividly remember dreaming entire schoolday mornings before waking up and being really pissed off it wasn't real and I had to do it all again (this must be common because there's a Calvin and Hobbes strip about it).
I certainly can confirm I've had the same. The worst ones were dreaming you were late for school, waking up and then seeing the time and it taking a minute before you realized it was Saturday. It gives credence to dreams being influenced more by real life, but I still prescribe to activation-synthesis theory.
>>
>>93478945
I had a similar dream once but it ended with her getting run over by a train.

I don't remember her face anymore but I did for a week after I had it.

I know for a fact I'm having a daughter at some point in my life but I'll never let her near trains because of this. Pretty random though because there are none where I live
>>
>>93478798
>>93478840
There's a scene in Richard Linklater's "Waking Life" that discusses this. The movie is about dreaming and reality in general, but the specific scene talks about the idea of the timespan of dreams. To paraphrase, you can go to bed at 10:00 on the dot, have a dream that seems to last for hours upon hours, then wake up at 10:01. This is followed up by the idea that after you die, your brain continues sending signals for twelve minutes. The conclusion then is that in that twelve minutes after you die, you could possible live for years if not forever, entirely within a dream.

>>93478872
As far as I've seen, we don't reset it ourselves. I personally have my own theory about how we on Earth-33 experience Crisis events, but that's for an actual Hypercrisis thread.
>>
>>93479010
I rarely remember anything from my dreams, that I remember as much as I do from last night is really rare. I know I have a lot of recurring set pieces though.

I just wanna say.....you've gotta be so thankful to not be in a place like that anymore. I have genuine horror stories about what happened to me and my friends in the mental wards. I was in and out of mental wards for about 4 years.
Two of the mental wards I went to should be shut down. Being in a mental ward might actually be worse than prison.
I hope one day I can get my revenge on those hospitals for what happened to me.

I can't say anymore than this.
>>
>>93479144

I've been having a lot of dreams where I have nice friends who care about me and want to have fun with me and listen to me and don't try to shove their own bullshit into it and are actually understanding/not rude.

I've talked to a friend a few times about things like these and he seems to believe that dreams, and the events that transpire in them, are alternate realities and what happens in them actually does transpire, but in a different reality.
While it seems like bullshit I do think about it a lot.
Who knows if that girl actually did get transported to some alternate world where DC comics are real.
Who knows if maybe, in the mist of her demented ramblings, there's a little bit of truth somewhere.
Who knows. Only The Shadow knows and he's not around anymore.

Oh I'm already in the Hypercrisis threads my friend.
I was actually working on my own multiversal metatextual theory based on pulps (mostly The Shadow pulps) and literature and the Wold Newton universe and how it tied into DC/Marvel comics until you guys came along and threw more comics and a 260 page document my way.

>I remember one time the papers printed that he wrecked his yacht by a deserted island and was stranded alone on the island for 7 days with 20 models. I could hit the limit talking about just the stuff batman made up about himself. Now that I know he's Batman, it's even FUNNIER. Do you think he enjoys writing these? Does he laugh to himself? is it a game to him? or is it all BUSINESS. does he SCOWL the entire time, totally unamused by the increasingly insane tabloid pieces he writes about himself? YES. THIS WILL CONVINCE THEM I'M JUST A USELESS GIGOLO FOR LONG ENOUGH TO COMPLETE THIS MISSION
>Or does Alfred write them?! That's even funnier! just imagine him typing away. "Yes, yes, quite good!"

>In my memories, I kinda, uh, finked on someone real bad. I was fed up, for a lot of reasons, so I tattled to the JLA. The fallout was bigger than expected. That one betrayal was the missing link needed to legally connect basically all of the big supervillains and prove their sanity. Luthor went down, Savage, the Joker, Strange, Ra's al Ghul, and so on. It was like when ya donate one organ and then like 50 people get organs. A wreck-one-ruin-10-free combo. I popped the DC world like a balloon. There's no amount of normal, everyday, money-talks witness protection that could save me from what was coming, so the JLA had three flashes and a braniac 5 trebuchet me to this world.

>Oh man, all the time! I loved his column! When he wrote exposes he had this whole thing going where he would look at corruption scandals from a sort of "simple citizen" point of view and then reveal deeper wit and systematically tear them down, all while continuing to sound like he was giving humble criticism as an "Average American". There's a reason he's (and this is true, in my memories) Lex Luthor's favorite journalist. Clark is dangerously sarcastic, but it's not underhanded sarcasm. I'd describe it as "honest sarcasm"? It's hard to explain.

This is fucking surreal.

How the fuck do you need legal writ to convict a prideful neandertal cannibal who tried to help the nazis conquer the world and survived a hit by his own asteroid mass driver base. It's not like he's Luthor who can say 'well I have all these superman killing weapons and power armors laying around for... home protection.'

I have a lot of serialized dreams, or dreams that come back up after days or weeks. The last one I remember started a lot like my daily life. Wake up, go to college, barely pay any attention, go back home to my dysfunctional family life, procrastinate until the next day.
Eventually in this one dream I actually met someone, we were just being good friends, I don't tend to fall for people, not after my first fuck up, I tend to keep a distance.
We started going out more and eventually had this beautiful scene by the beach where she cried and I started crying too because we were just being so happy together, me helping her with some abstract family problem (I've helped in many of those, ironically, can't get out of mine though).
By the third dream was when things started being surreal. Same girl, though. We went on this trip and it was really somber, this is the dream I remember less of, just us, looking ahead and around in a bus with faceless people, holding our hands tight, I remember feeling both the idea of warmth and cold, something my dream brought up mostly. We were worried for each other.
I had an in-between dream in which I was controlling rooms in a dungeon sorta place, making ingenious traps and stuff, until I actually killed somebody, nothing to do with me or the girl desu
The fourth one was where we were in a field. A LOT of other people now, we had to go through this trial. It would be a bunch of people, thrown at challenges. You could team up (I think?), there would be posts and stuff thrown all around the place, if you surpassed enough hardship, you'd be rewarded in some way. I think there was an underlying tone or idea, those things you know because the dream is YOURS and your head is narrating, but I think whoever came out on top, or the most people that came out on top, would never face emotional problems again.
>>
>>93475322
What are some pointers on what staff should NOT do working here? Have a friend that's planning on working in a place like that
>>
>>93482873
cont.

We get inside this huge fenced forest-thing, its all very pretty, we get to a post, a lot of people gathered and talking, grabbing backpacks and stuff, I remember discussing with her how it was cool that people were teaming up. Close by I could see one of the "trap-rooms" from my previous dream. Just a cube in the middle of nowhere, one guy went in and drowned (?). Water poured out of the window explosively and rewinded back to the room.
We grabbed some stuff, like ropes a camping set and food, and went exploring. We talked more about the dangers of doing this trial alone. Of how we hated violence, of how we loved having eachother, because that meant we could escape from the things that hurt us most, or solve them together, with a tenth of the stress.

Suddenly something flashes in a nearby tree trunk, its an axe. Flashes all around and into the horizon, everyone is now armed. We get surrounded, I know she is kinda slow, I grab her by the hand and we start to run, when I try to find something for her to use not for the axe I now had, I looked back and see some fucker already cutting her arm, I let go of her to hit the guy and while he was down I tried looking for her and I saw the saddest fucking face ever. God fuck my brain for that. It made me remember of times of my mother crying, it kinda looked like everyone, then. She had stepped in some trap, a rope around her neck, tied to the top of a nearby rock. I already kinda knew what was going to happen next. I tried grabbing her as she got slingshotted against the rocks, another guy popped up from behind the rock, pulling the rope to kill her faster, I tried to run to cut it but the first guy was already going for me.Her expression changed when I got close to her, someone tied some rope to my neck now, I gave her a peck on the lips, she smiled while covered in tears, she died and the guys said the'd have fun with me. I woke up in tears.
Thanks for sabotaging my hopes brain.

>>93475983
Not the one I visited.

Bonus.
Go visit any old folks home, kids. No cartoon has ever depicted it nearly as frightening as it is. There's two things that they fail to mention in movies and cartoons.

The first is the screaming. Yup. Constant confused, bewildered sudden shrieks from nowhere. Imagine the cat lady from the Simpsons. Only less intelligible. Just quick, sudden yelps now and then, then silence for a while. Then another quick shriek. Not a cry for help. Not someone saying something. Just an audible loud sudden outcry then nothing. I remember my mom was homeless and had nowhere to go before she died. Mom was perfectly lucid and sane but had nowhere to go. Couldn't stay with me nor my brother no matter how I tried. The state stepped in and said she had to be in an institution despite being mentally fine. So she had a roommate for a little while before we found her somewhere new to stay. Her roommate would scream at her. A lot. She would accuse mom of stealing from her. Never said what she stole just that she stole from her. Would wake her up in the middle of the night with it. Checked all of mom's belongings, what few she had. Nothing. Of course didn't help that her roommate wasn't with it.

Oh.
And the smell. That's point two. Some cartoons will tell you it smells funny. There's nothing funny about shit and piss. It's just awful and it's everywhere. There's nowhere that doesn't smell.

Later my mom got transferred to some much nicer places before she died. Nicer. But the same above problems were still there. I mean from a cleanliness standpoint, and from a standpoint of things looking nice? She ended up in somewhere nice. But the smells and the screaming. They never stopped.

I talked to a case worker from my county. Their words:
"People who are already trapped in their own minds do poorly when trapped inside am institution. My job is to get people out there and socialize with the outside world so they don't feel so isolated and trapped because that makes things worse."

Generally, these institutions exist, or are supposed to exist when there is no other option and the state regrets their necessity and existence. Moreover. Rarely a place of healing.

>>
>>93485844
No. That's not it at all. Dreams do not happen in real-time. And "lucid dreams" don't involve any sort of control, there's just a glitch that makes you feel like you have control. So yes, extremely long dreams can happen in a very short period of time; but as far as I'm aware it's just the mind piecemealing together a shit-ton of information and trying to make sense of it. It's a very poor analogy but think of it as your mind very rapidly trying to force together a jigsaw puzzle.

It's more Dreams are total abstraction.
In the waking world your thoughts are relative to what you're perceiving. In your dreams your thoughts are relative to themselves meaning there's no real objective measurement like with time.
Or even possibly they're just abstract ideas. You don't need to experience hours of thoughts, you simply need to think you're experiencing hours. For instance In a dream I saw a beautiful woman, but then realized I wasn't actually seeing a woman, there weren't really any concrete features to see, I just thought she was beautiful and since I was in a realm of thought it made it true.

Being in a mental ward IS worse than prison. At least in prisons, you can take classes, you have access to books, you have access to doctors who give a shit, etc. Wards can get anyone committed for as long as they deem them "untreated" or "unfit" to be out in public. Wards can get away with hurting patients as long as they can justify being on the right. I rather live in a prison than live in a place full with crazy people and a staff that only hate doing their jobs for not being what they said they were going to be at a young age. In my experience, the only good mental health help are people with degrees you pay for privately. They can be held legible if anything happens, and most won't try to do dumb shit to do you fearing they will lose their medical license.

You die in real life.

If you don't have it you start sleepwalking.

In the wild it is generally a bad thing to start walking around when predators are most active while halucinating.

You should get a doctor to check you out. Apnea can cause organ damage over time and really fuck you up.
>>
>>93490607
It's a good thing you never had that. I learned about emulation and how to pirate at a stupidly young age from my older stepbrother and it killed the magic of getting new video games for me. But on the bright side I made some money selling copies of zsnes and a few roms to other kids in school.

Seriously, when's the next Hypercrisis thread?

Harley Anon said that:
>According to my memories, eventually shit will go down in this world, and your real self will bitch about it on /co/.

Harley Anon also said:
>>Will there be any supers in this universe in our lifetime, to your knowledge?
>Oh yea, you guys just wait. I saw a few things on the way here. Last century was THE last century where there were still things people could dream about that they couldn't do.

Security guard here. The hospital I work at has a psych ward, I get to be the one that holds people down for their medications.

It's not as often as you'd think.
>>
>>93475550
I had to break up a fight when one patient farted in another's room.
>>
>>93475983
Rooms are, wards not really. Think psych departments get that kind of money?
>>
>>93487207
They also mentioned being beaten, but doesn't admit someone else did it. So you've got this kid that runs away from home and look suicidal.
>>
>>93475859
My place, you wouldn't get sedated for that unless you wouldn't give the rolls back. Also stealing toilet paper from other patients would probably get your ass beat by them until I broke it up.

Bothering other patients might get you sedated, refusing to sleep, yelling, cursing, that sort of thing.

Quite a few years ago I got surgery for my back and I had a lot of morphine in me. I dreamed I was a star wars character and had 100 years worth of memories when I woke up. The only reason I didn't get thrown into a mental hospital, by their own words, is because I was still basically a child. Don't trust the docs with anything ever

Literally what happened to my grandma before she croaked, she couldn't afford to live in the old folks home that was actually nice anymore so the state transferred her to this psuedo psych ward where there were people shitting and screaming everywhere. She had her own room thankfully but I'll never forget what I saw when I walked in there. Shit is terrible, spent the last few months of her life surrounded by a bunch of lunatics watching Dog the bounty hunter. This is why I'm afraid of growing old.

Sorry, just getting back to this, but I don't know what to tell you, man. It's common place as hell.

Here's the thing, how often do you ever hear a national news story about abuse in an asylum at all or a wrongful holding? It's damn near never. Why? Because they don't care.

I remember when my grandma had a short stint in a old folks home. There was an old lady next to her who was cursing like a drunk sailor. Being 7 years old I found this hilarious. That was until I realized on the way out that the old lady was my uncle's neighbor who would let me play with her cat.

You likely have sleep apnea. You should really see a doctor
>>
>>93488318
I've had that happen to me like 4 times in my life.
The first one I really remember was having a large tiger on top of me, and it's weight was suffocating me
