Mecha

It's never really been a popular genre in the West and giant robots in general have never really been featured in major roles. As a kid I didn't really like that stuff but gained a liking for it as I got older. I think the problem is that Japan tends to take mecha seriously and all the stories tend to be dark and philosophical and gritty whereas in the west they tend to be silly and dumb. Thats why Pacific Rim was so divisive for many people because it was a genre that many people had no experience with and many werent sure what they were supposed to feel.

We need more light hearted mecha in the west. That'll force Japan to see the error of their ways!

To this day I still don't understand why sports is not a popular genre in western comics. Generally, what appeals to (man)children is very similar in both Japan and the US, the big hits are your super-powerful heroes saving the world, your adventure stories, your suspenseful mysteries. But then you have sports as a another HUGE pillar in manga, and there's just no equivalent over here. If you look at the best selling manga of all time, it's full of sports series - Slam Dunk, Touch, Hajime no Ippo, Captain Tsubasa, Kinnikuman, Baki, Shoot, H2, Major, Rookies, Prince of Tennis - the list is endless.
Yet in american comics the genre might as well not exist.

Normie sports lovers don't really care about the narrative aspect of sports. Not in the same way they care about the narrative aspects of fiction anyway. Not really, it's closer to an inverse X-men situation. The quirkless are increasingly considered disabled, something to be pitied in BnHA, one born from two parents with Quirks especially.

You get quite a bit of social backstory stuff as well that's interesting, such as the marketisation of heroes, marriages used to combine quirks and the terrible effects of it, quirks potentially increasing the faults in already flawed people, the idea of the ultimate hero falling apart if people realise All-might doesn't actually have a Quirk in the same sense that everyone else does, as it's less like a gene and more like a mantle passed from person to person .
