First Comics.

I own more Image than I do any other publisher besides DC. But they don't really have an identity as a company. Personally I'm a Valiant fanboy, buy that might just be contrarianism rather than speaking of their actual quality. I hold Fantagraphics in high regard, same with Dark Horse, but I don't actually own many of their books. Over all, the best comics company is Albatross Funny Books.

Fantagraphics, Abstract, Drawn and Quarterly and Dark Horse are some of my faves.

Honestly the amount of comic companies putting stuff out that is non-big, two non-image is really high you just have to dig a little bit more for it.
