Tony's even worse off in the sense that, by his own admission, he's been doing everything he can to avoid his own grief ever since he lost them. That wasn't Tony being an asshole; that was decades of bottled-up grief combined with the stress of nearly losing his friend as well as everything else over the past few days (all of which is a result of Cap's noble, but reckless self-righteousness) coming out in a outburst of uncontrollable rage. His breakdown is entirely understandable. Not justifiable, but violent outbursts of rage are never really what you'd call "justified," only circumstantially relateable.

They say outright in Civil War that Tony came out as Iron Man 8 years before, and CW takes place in 2016.
