I just didn't like how the wings really do not serve a purpose. They are fake and not used for a whole lot, he can fly without them and they are not the main vehicle for flight at all. So why have enormous bulky wings on if they are just really going to get in the way for a guy who fights hand to hand. The wings should have a much greater purpose other than controlling some while in the air. It's almost as if he does not really need the flying theme at all. He can just be some weird mix of Peter Pan and Conan.

Even when remade as an alien they could have gone with some kind of bird alien or something bu instead opted for the same thing, guy who has a flying belt also has wings that help him control movement some. We've seen tons of Thanagarians have no problem flying without any wings.

I'm not sure if it is that as much as it is annoying when no two writers can make up their minds which one is going to be The Hawkman. It was especially bad in the late 00's when they kept changing their minds. He was Carter, then all of a sudden he turns out to have been Katar all along, then they reveal he was actually Carter, then he dies and is Katar only to find out he is reincarnated Carter....

I also feel like the guy never really got a good silver age reintroduction. Flash, Green Lantern, Atom, they were all reintroduced with updated powers, mythos, names and costumes. Everything was upgraded for the newer era. But Hawkman being written by the same guy as the golden age just kept the same look and name, same powers and just said "okay....he's an alien now.....done!"

I think he needed to be more distinct from the golden age version from the start. Alien cop puts on nth metal harness and fights with a mace is not different enough from archaeologist puts on nth metal harness and fights with a mace when taking a look they are both about the same. Katar even worked at a museum.

They are not bad on their own, the issue cones along when they are on teams with people who have massive lists of powers and are essentially gods. Standing next to Superman, Martian Manhunter, Flash....most people who are not on their level look superfluous.
