I'm thinking of opening a small comic book store. Please talk me out of it.
>>
>>93352747
Do it. Just keep a few cans of air freshener in the store at all times.
>>
Where would you open it?
>>
Forget about the comics just sell funko pops and magic cards
>>
>>93352747
Don't dew it.
>>
>>93352747
Look at how few actual comics are sold. Think of selling only a minuscule fraction of that.
>>
>>93352747
If it's in my side of Texas I'll come buy shit from you anon
>>
>>93352791
>>93352906

So sell comics, but also a bunch of other stuff to make it work? I didn't think people actually bought funko pops. I thought that was a myth.
>>
>>93352938
youre going to sell everything but comics
>>
>>93352938
People buy funko pops by the truckload.

Also remember that comic shops are all about location. A lot of the ones that go under do so because they're nowhere near their audience.
>>
>>93352972

So in a major city, or in the suburbs? I can't see /co/ living in the middle of Georgia for some reason.
>>
What kind of loan can you get from the bank.

Based on the payments on that loan, can you make it at least a year on your savings alone?
>>
>>93352938
no sells just comics anymore. The two stores in my area specialize in baseball cards and magic/boardgames respectively.
>>
You have to have a space in the back for porn
>>
>>93352747
>Please talk me out of it.

Marvel
>>
>>93352747
i say go for it anon. Pick a small place near antique shops and gimmicky food. Don't forget to sell warhammer figures as your main source of income and host DnD nights.
>>
>>93352987
I'm out in rural Florida. We have one here and they make a killing on Magic and Warhammer products.
>>
>>93352747
Do it. But have lots of windows for natural light and be friendly and courteous. If you hire staff, have a dress code, and actually treat them like employees, not friends (this sounds nasty , but it's better for everyone).

Actively advertise. Even just small stuff like business cards, but advertise. Really connect with customers actively.
>>
>>93353030

Isn't Florida notoriously cheap to live in? You guys don't even have sales tax.
>>
>>93352933
Where in texas are you?
>>
Good luck homie. I'd love to own or work in a comic shop, but it seems like it'd be hard thing to do these days.

Where are you located?
>>93352987
Comic fans live everywhere. But for business sake, you'll fare better in a city, or college town.
>>
>>93353159

A major city in a blue state, let's leave it at that.
>>
>>93353067
All this is great advice. Especially how you treat customers. I've been to so many comic shops where the owners very clearly get pissed off whenever a customer comes in. They all go out of business.
>>
waste your money buying comics for yourself
>>
Don't have loud conversations. I've heard comic shop owners say some obnoxious shit

>Someone hurt my feelings once
>>
>>93352987
My local comic shop was in uptown which was pretty popular, espically on weekends. I think the shop's problem was it was a little shop buried inside bigger stores. So, make sure you're in a city and you can be seen by people driving.
>>
>>93352747
I've thought about it too since my city doesn't have one, but it could get in the way of me actually one day getting to write them idk
>>
>>93352747

comics won't be a thing in 10 years. make sure to have magic cards, funko pops, vintage toys, movie posters, t-shirts, in stock as well. lots of 80s/90s pop culture focused merch.

a more nerdy version of hot topic as far as merch goes.
>>
>>93353074
Who told you that? We most definitely have a sales tax. Varies how much by county, but in central FL at least it's 7.5%
>>
if you want to get an idea of what it would be like, here's a series following a small comic shop

I visited miami & everything was always exactly what is said it was at gas stations. If a piece of beef jerky said it was $1.50 it was $1.50 & no tax. Maybe it's only a south florida thing.
>>
>>93353803
Oh, food is different. I'm not sure the exact rules on food, but I know certain kinds of food are exempt from sales tax but some aren't. I believe it's the same rules as what you're allowed to spend food stamps on, but I'm not 100% on that.
>>
>>93353803
In Europe sales tax is included in the price you see next to, or on, the product.
>>
>>93353839

I don't think you guys have state tax either. You only write one check to the irs on your taxes each year instead of 2 like most states. Free fish too since you guys are surrounded by water. It's like mini australia.

I've been to a few of these places, but I don't think I have ever seen them make any money at all. The owners seemed to be the kind of people who are totally cool with just slight above abject poverty as long as they do not hate where they work.

One in my town had to also work part time at a Barnes and Noble just to pay bills. His wife had to handle the comic shop while he did that.

Another shop owner never once shaved or wore real shoes, just flipflops. But I am not entirely sure if that was just a matter of personal choice.
>>
>93353352
It's not about hurt feeling they are just really annoying every week
>>
>>93352987
I live in the middle Georgia area. I would definitely buy comics from you
>>
>>93352938
>I didn't think people actually bought funko pops. I thought that was a myth.

You probably shouldn't open a business.
>>
>>93353352
>>93353311
I find a certain level of banter is fine in a comic shop, as long as it pertains to the comics and related media. On the other hand, talking about other customers (even if it's not a complaint) is a good way to make other people in the store feel uncomfortable. Same goes for your shrewd purchases at recent conventions and whatnot. Try to save shop talk for when you have reasonable privacy.
>>
>tfw the local Hastings closed last November and now I have no place to kill time after work
Open a comic shop in Lake Jackson, Texas and I'll keep you afloat myself.
>>
>>93352747

Bad time to get into it. Marvel seems set to crash the market again

Cute NEET girls will come to ask you for a job.
>>
hold contest every month (drawing)
get a couple arcades in there/pinball too
hold a movie night (either show comic related movies or cartoon episodes) offer free drinks snacks
also hire hs drop dead gorgeous girls only.
have them dress up and have a 'tips for pics' jar at register.
also let them sell their prints (if they have some - or make an arrangement with them in making cosplay prints)
