Is there an episode of a children's cartoon more grotesque than 'Dark Harvest'?
>>
My squigglyspootch!
>>
>>93334529
Bad Rubber Piggy is less disgusting, but it's a lot more disturbing and upsetting.
>>
Insane in the Membrain

So fucked up that it got banned in America.
>>
>>93334966
As a kid both episodes left me laying awake at night but Bad Bad Rubber Piggy left me awake at night far more often.
>>
>>93334529
The time travel episode was way worse.
>>
Not to be a SU fag, but I think the episode 'Keeping It Together' is more grotesque as an idea, but isn't as grotesque in visuals as "Dark Harvest' is.

Remember just how horrific gem shards are to begin with- they're literal fragments of the original gem's mind and psyche, desperately trying to reach out and find the rest of themselves. Imagine your computer is a sentient device, then rip it into pieces. Each piece is partially aware that they're not whole, but no part by itself is sentient enough to do anything besides reach out for other computer signals, trying to put itself back together again. At that point, gems are effectively dead and gone.

Now add fusion into the mix. While fusion represents relationships of any kind more so than specifically romantic or sexual ones, they are more often romantic than they are familial.

Thus, forced-fusion of gem shards is a mix of necromancy, rape, and necrophilia, all to a 'being' that is in constant pain and trying to make itself whole.

TL;DR: Cluster gems are a mix between Frankenstein, Necromorphs, and rape, except each part is tortured, unwilling, and screaming for help it can't receive. Charming!
>>
There was a time on Nick when this whole show was rated TV-Y.
>>
I'm with OP. Dark Harvest was bad for a kid. Even as an adult, it gives me the creeps.
>>
>>93334529
I'm pretty sure Invader Zim is the reason I'm so jaded as an Adult.
>>
>>93334529
I'm still not sure what fucking amazing pitch or how best of pals Jhonen had to be to not only get the episode idea past the pitching phase to Nick execs, but to get it fucking made.

Hirsch got notes from Disney telling him he couldn't even have a short where Mabel experienced death for the first time when she saw a cute butterfly die.
>>
It sure gave me a few nightmares as a kid. I can remember one to this day because of how bad it scared me.

Dark Harvest made me laugh as a kid but if I first saw it as an adult, I'd probably be more disturbed.

Bad Bad Rubber Piggy is psychologically disturbing on all levels.

I remember being squeamish during Hobo 13 when Zim used that one guy as a battering ram and when the door opened, you could see all this ooze coming out of his deflated skull. Gross.

For me it was seeing the steady decline in Dib's physical and mental health as he became more crippled and pathetic. Although the reasoning for it happening was crazy sci-fi tech, the effects were all things that could easily happen in reality by other means.

Seeing Dib go from planning an elaborate stealth mission to just struggling to breathe and walk while dealing with crippling PTSD flashbacks is still chilling to me at my current age. Seeing it as a kid was legitimately scarring. Not to mention Dib actually fucking DIES. He's resurrected by his dad of course but it's still shocking.
>>

Yeah, out of everything in the show, this episode was easily the most horrific.

I think the scariest thing about this show was those questions about the Irken race itself that got brought up in some of the unaired scripts but never answered, namely that the real Irken mind is the computer inside the backpack that's plugged into a disposable cloned meat body. They could never have come about through natural evolution, so they must have been engineered to be that way. Did they do that to themselves, in some desperate means to survive by installing cold, durable machinery? Was it a bid for power? Or did some lunatic cook them up in a laboratory and lose control (or worse, deliberately released them) releasing a tyrannical scourge across the galaxy, gradually sterilizing all other life until they're all that's left?

Is Zim's age ever stated? I doubt Irkin lifespans are anything like a humans but I'm still curious. Zim himself seems very childish but he's definitely an adult I'm sure. It's just really bizarre when you see his rivalry with Dib and realize he has a fucking rivalry with a human child when they seem to be at the same level. I don't know if Dibs just that intelligent or Zim is just that much of a failure.

Zim is a technological/weaponry genius, but a retard in all other aspects. Irkens have super long lifespans, Vasquez has said Zim is about 200 years old, but he's still young by irken standards.

The show's good and funny. It really made its own humor and used it well. But it inspired such a painful wave of kids who tried to parrot and imitate it badly.

>>93347501
But it also spawned a big wave of easy "goth" girls which i very much enjoyed in middle and high school
>>
I'm really shocked Invader Zim was allowed to air on a daytime television children's network to be honest. Like I get that it wasn't SO horrible, it wasn't really gorey or anything but some of the themes and imagery were so disturbing, especially for the time it was airing, I really don't know how a lot of that stuff got an FCC approval unless the initial plots and storyboards were insanely worse before being re-worked or something.
>>
>>93343870
Nick knew what they were getting into when they hired the author of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac to direct a cartoon for them. They definitely wanted to push the limits of what they usually aired and since it was one of the first episodes my guess is that this was Vazquez diving head first into the swimming pool to see how deep he'd be able to get before he reached the bottom.

I mean old ass Doctor Who survived for decades as a children's show despite being way scarier and more gruesome than any of its contemporary sci-fi rivals (with the exception of Blake's 7). But when a character shows up on screen and all you can think about is what retarded thing they'll do to move the plot forward, you've gone too far.

But Mandy bothers me as well. The show goes way too far with Mandy as a character, making her out to be this weird unbeatable all powerful terrifying force of nature, except for when the plot deems it necessary that she be knocked down a peg. It's not fun when one of the main characters is untouchable, and when the show actively breaks this characterization whenever it interferes with the story. Grim was probably the only consistently good character on the show, outside of some of the side villains.

Did you guys find yourselves feeling more sympathetic towards Dib or Zim when you guys were watching as kids? Is it the same now? I feel like Dib is meant to be more relatable and shown more sympathy but as a kid for some reason I always felt really bad for Zim and how much he failed. Maybe it's because it's more focused on him as the main character or whatever. Don't get me wrong I still loved Dib and felt bad for him but I often felt myself feeling bad for Zim's various plights more often.
>>
>>93350290
In resume the whole thing didn't make sense, but when he was elected as the grim reaper it was the stone age, for humans, and the election implied that there was another grim reaper before in a some undetermined time, very Lovecraftesque thing if you think about it, but in the end doesn't matter.

Dib was sympathetic as well, but looking back he's a retard as well, whose intense autism is both his greatest strength and his greatest weakness.

The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy episode 'Little Rock of Horrors' is quite morbid when you think about it. It’s an episode in which mass murder takes place. Men, women and children are literally killed on screen.

The meteor in Little Rock of Horrors eats brains. Throughout the episode the Billy leads the unfortunate citizens of Endsville to the meteor who then sucks their brains out, digest them and grow larger. The victims of the meteor have their eyes turn green and they become mindless zombies, oblivious to the slaughter around them.

As far as neuroscience in concerned, consciousness is the product of a living brain. ‘You’ as a conscious entity with awareness and sense of self is contained in the fleshy grey matter in your skull. Damaging your brain via physical or chemical means impairs your brain function and greatly affects your consciousness. Destroy your brain and ‘you’ are destroyed as well.

The meteor does not harm the body of its victims, but it does kill them. When it eats the brain of its victim it destroys the brain and thus kills its victim. Everyone who has their brain sucked out in the episode is dead and becomes a marionette copse that dances along to the carnage.

Dee Dee and Dexter become giant monsters.
They fight in a populated city as Dee Dee tries to tell Dexter a long winded stupid story he refuses to listen to
As they fight on they continue to transform, IMO Dee Dee becomes more horrifying with her spider like appearance and morphed voice.
She eventually pins Dexter down and finishes the story.

>>
>>93347355
everything else about it is good. it has an appealing design, beautiful colors, fucking ingenious music, and very interesting and creative premises for a kid's show. and towards the end it only got better as its reality expanded, the writing got more complex, and we learned more about Zim and Dib's lives, history, and the worlds they were from.

imo the WAFFLEZ RANDUMB stuff gets a pass because it was just one component of a show that could still tell an enjoyable story without relying exclusively on the stupid humor. I mean, shit, I might have nostalgia goggles on too, but damned if there weren't plenty of other reasons to like the show.

Earth and its inhabitants were all unlikable retards so I wanted Zim to win every time. The people who would be safe from him were the only people I liked, such as Membrane.
>>
>>93350362
I think it's easier to feel sympathy for Zim because he seems more hopelessly clueless. the whole premise that he believes he's on a secret mission from the Tallest in itself is kinda poignant; Dib on the other hand sometimes places trust in the wrong people, but he usually catches on.

>>93357049
funny you should mention that, I actually remember trying to download this episode in particular from a p2p client on my family's computer in 2002, and it took hours even though it was a low quality (by today's standards) mpg file recorded from TV. I remember impatiently trying repeatedly to play it from the beginning; that whole first segment is burned into my memory. Looper's depiction of time travel is flawed. Not because it has different rules than what is usually expected of time travel stories, but because it goes and breaks its own rules throughout it.
>>
>>93359350
Membrane doesn't hate Dib, he's just disappointed in him. You can really see why in that incomplete episode where Dib gives up on chasing Zim and decides to do science instead.

Dib's almost as smart as his dad. Dib and Membrane become super-close and proud of one another for that short time. Membrane probably can't help but see Dib's conspiracy theory stuff as wasted potential
>>
>>93359721
yes it does, i remember that being a point but because they're fucking with the past, it takes a minute to remember shit. so it's altering time in the moment. you remember both lives and then you start to forget the original as a memory. i think that's what closing the loops was about. it's been a while since i watched it. so because it just happened he's going to freak out, he felt the time change while no one else did. and he's starting to remember he's never had a finger or foot or whatever. but he still remembers both timelines and thus it's terrifying.
>>
>>93359928
If he got his limb cut off in the past then the entire course of his life would have changed, he wouldn't have been in the car, EVERYTHING would have changed the moment they cut his leg off in the past. Looper is a good movie but the logic behind its time travel isn't great.

It is not conscious, though parts of it are. There are structures within it that were once separate organisms; aboriginal, evolved, and complex. It is designed to improvise, to use what is there and then move on. Good enough is good enough, and so the artifacts are ignored or adapted. The conscious parts try to make sense of the reaching out. Try to interpret it.

One imagines an insect’s leg twitching twitching twitching. One hears a spark closing a gap, the ticking so fast it becomes a drone. Another, oblivious, reexperiences her flesh falling from her bones, the nausea and fear, and begs for death as she has for years now. Her name is Maria. It does not let her die. It does not comfort her. It is unaware of her because it is unaware.

But unaware is not inactive. It finds power where it can, nestled in a bath of low radiation. Tiny structures, smaller than atoms, harvest the energy of the fast-moving particles that pass through it. Subatomic windmills. It eats the void and it reaches out it reaches out it reaches out.

Yeah, that episode ensured that even Dog wasn't an exception to their "every character is horrible" writing.

Its why I don't get people using Winslow as an anti-Shadman image. Its taking one of the worst cartoon characters who wasn't in Allan Gregory against an artist because his fetish work and shitty humor bothers you. Its not portrayed in a way to imply even Winslow is better than Shadman, its just a random image presented.
