Why in the earth American webcomic artists can't tell a proper story without adding shitty fantasy or sci-fi elements?

At least it has a plot. Back in the golden age of gamer webcomics shit was worse.

No I mean lazy bullshit like "mary sue was a college student until a tranny black elf came from the magical realm of dicksuckia and now she is the heir of the dipshit kingdom".
>>
Real life is boring and has too much shit autists would freak out about if you got one tiny detail wrong. Better to just go pure fantasy.
>>
>>93303514
It's the easiest and laziest way to improve your story. Writing drama, especially real life drama requires talent that exceeds an average webcomic artist's abilities.
>>
>>93303514
Because "slice of life" webcomics about normal people in real situations are invariably cancer

>SJW drama
>romantic drama
>boring """plots""" that go nowhere

Cancer, and so are you if you disagree
>>
>>93304076
It's both shit actually. What we really lack is >>93304039 what this anon says. Honestly, I've never even seen a single webcomic that includes tragedy.
>>
They never learned history or classic literature or cinema and just base shit off of what they do know, shit like Legend of Zelda and Star Wars.
>>
I feel like this is a problem in most North American comics in general not just webcomics. You look at all the big publishers: DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, etc. It's 99% action shit.
>>
>>93304144
Really? Not a single one? No tragedy? No loss?

Crap, I should have resized that. It didn't look as big on the site.

Fantasy webcomic writers often disregard the first rule of narration that is, never explain everything on the first run. It bores the new reader and makes him/her drop the story after few pages. It's like trying to explain the Dune encyclopedia before getting into the actual novel.

A tragedy has to involve a character suffering a great loss because of a very specific character flaw, a weakness, or an inability to cope with adversity.

In writing terms it's basically offering up a character to be sacrificed for a plot that will shake people up enough to change their behavior.

Webcomic authors generally don't do this. Either the character isn't flawed enough and they always have some kind of justification so they don't have to take responsability for what's happening, or there simply isn't any conflict because the authors themselves are, ironically, the kind of pampered people who don't experience enough hardship in life to really appreciate good tragedy. They also put all their livelihoods into a single work of fiction and become too attatched to serialized characters, instead of doing what good authors do and finish a fucking story to move onto the next and thus form a following around your works, not just one.

I've meant tragedy as a main theme, not as a plot element. I was speaking more in A Dog of Flanders sense.

Also before anyone says

>but bad things happen in webcomics and sometimes the hero doesn't win!

That's not the same thing as tragedy.

A tragedy is a story about something going wrong because the hero is who he is and cannot change himself, he suffers because deep down who he is just isn't fit to survive and thus he is ruined and made an example of what to avoid.

Chris chan is a tragedy, Cain and Abel is a tragedy, things where the story simply couldn't have played out any other way because the characters flaws drive the plot as a self fulfilling prophecy.

So no, something tragically bad happening in the story isn't tragedy in and of itself, suffering isn't tragedy, especially if the protagonist has enough wiggle room to make things better.

Tragedy is the protagonist who never stood a chance.

I think you're expecting too much for this medium. Webcomics are at best, light hearted escapist fiction, not a Sophocles play.
>>
>>93304650
Excuses for bad workmanship and standards. If Lovecraft made a living in cheap escapist fantasy magazines, there's no reason webcomic authors can't put some effort into their craft as well.

Yeah this. People are bored with real life. Especially "nerdy" people who, at their most extreme, can't/don't want to deal with reality. It's not cool enough, they're not important or special enough. So those elements are appealing.

Now it's usually SHITTY because instead of thinking of something new and creative, they're just copying the rest of the media they consume.
>>
>>93304332
I've definitely never seen loss in a webcomic.
>>
>>93304697
You're completely disregarding the aesthetical boundaries and differences of a prose and a comic book. It's not about bad workmanship, I mean they could be much better but you can't make a proper french dish with the ingredients of a hamburger if you understand what I mean.

>>93303903
>Implying autists don't nitpick realism in fantasy

Can't speak for other people, but I like fantasy and sci fi because it gives me freedom to design the setting. Costumes, weapons, buildings, alien races, etc.

Normal people in normal clothes are boring.

What about both genres?
>>
>>93305058
A normal modern setting doesn't mean it's boring visually, as long as you're not a lazy fuck about it.

Breaking bad has good fucking design for modern stuff. Just use different settings you aren't familiar with, have situations where you draw people wearing interesting or off kilter things, make it so that the characters are still interesting to look at with normal clothes, study cinematography and how to frame things in an interesting way.
