The first is a better movie. the third is a better Transformers movie. As far as transformers moments go, I like the fourth one best(even if the movie itself is a bit disjointed). I feel like fans like 3 a lot because they can sort of piece together intentions and subtext that would go over a lot of people's heads, or honestly aren't fully realized but fans give it more slack. In all likelihood, there was no way the Autobots could reach Chicago before the attack, and they didn't really know it would happen, just that an attack was very likely. The Beast Wars II anime/manga had the Maximals fighting Predacons over an unpledictubu energy called "Angeryourassmom" on post-apocalyptic Earth, Beast Wars Neo revealed it to be Unicron's essence scattered throughout time and space.

Simon Furman either had basically the same idea separately, or was vaguely aware of the JBW premises - he folded the ideas together in the (underwhelming) IDW BW comic books later. But anyway, back in the late 90s/early 00s, when 3H Botcons sooorta had a running story arc that expanded on the "core" Beast/G1 continuity, they did a storyline centered around the reveal that Unicron's essence/spirit/whatever had somehow, by coincidence or cosmic design, wound up inside prehistoric planet Earth.

Much later, the KissPlayer radio dramas of all things, revisited the idea and established that yes, even in prehistoric times in JG1 continuity, Unicron's essence was sleeping in Earth.

Anywhere is fine. If you want to fully appreciate the series, then start with the original cartoon. It may not have aged all that well (and to be honest, even back in the day, it had some questionable animation), but it's still got 80s cheese and charm galore. From there, I'm sure there's a nifty guideline for whatever comics are a-must to read. In Space, Optimus Prime is captured by the sorceress Quintessa, the firstborn and lifegiver of the Transformers, and brainwashed into becoming her servant.

On Earth, Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) and the Autobots are being hunted down by the Transformers Response Force, a paramilitary team led by Colonel William Lennox (Josh Duhamel). Cade and Bumblebee rescue street orphan Izabella (Isabella Moner), a skilled mechanic who lives in the ruins of Chicago after her parents' death, and welcome her into their family. Cade and his assistant Jimmy (Jerrod Carmichel) live in an abandoned scrapyard with the Autobots and the Dinobots. Izabella sets out to repair Bumblebee's damage vocal processors.

At the behest of his superiors, Lennox approaches Megatron to help the TRF kill the Autobots in exchange for a new team of Decepticons. Meanwhile, Sir Edmund Burton (Anthony Hopkins) learns of Optimus' impending arrival and sends his servant Cogman to locate Cade.

TRF and the Decepticons attack the junkyard, but Cade, Izabella and Jimmy escape while the Autobots figh the Decepticons. Cogman rescues them and urges Cade and Bumblebee to join him. Cade leaves Izabella under the protection of Drift, Hound and Crosshairs and departs.

At Burton's estate, Cade meets historian Vivian Wembley (Laura Haddock), the last blood descendant of the wizard Merlin (Stanley Tucci), and her guardian Hot Rod, Bumblebee's old brother-in-arms. Cade learns that he is the Last Knight prophecized to wield the mystic sword Excalibur in humanity's darkest hour.

Burton reveals that Merlin's staff was a cybertronian device bestowed to him by the Knights of Cybertron, Quintessa's former servants who betrayed her to protect humanity and helped King Arthur build Camelot. Optimus is the last of their kind and is returning to Earth to reclaim the staff and destroy Earth in order to restore his homeworld Cybertron. Cade and Vivian must find it first.

Optimus reunites with the Autobots, and they are pardoned by the government. Cade and Vivian fall in love and leave with Izabella to find Cade's daughter Tessa Yeager (Nicola Peltz), who had to go into hiding. Megatron vows revenge against them.

In an after-credits scene, Quintessa adopts a human form and moves forward with her plan to awaken Unicron, who lies dormant at the core of the Earth.

Quintessa is the first child of Primus and a member of the Dynasty of the Primes. She also created the Allspark, which led to the birth of the Transformers, and left Cybertron after the fall of the Primes.

Unicron has six "horns" scattered across the world that are emerging more and more each day.

The Witwicky family descends from Merlin and also created a secret society, the Witwickans, that Edmund Burton is a member of, and they've been keeping the Transformers' existence on Earth a secret since the fall of Camelot. Vivian is said to be Merlin's last descendant, meaning that Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and his parents have died.

Ex-agent Seymour Simmons (John Turturro) has been living in Cuba, which has granted asylum to Transformers refugees, alongside Autobots Topspin and Roadbuster, and is a newly-recruited member of the Witwickans.

Optimus calls himself "Nemesis Prime" while under Quintessa's control.

Megatron carries Quintessa's mark but it is never revealed how he was rebuilt after being turned into Galvatron or how they met since Quintessa lives in Space.

Cogman is introduced by Burton as a "Headmaster", but never uses that ability.

Barricade disappears once again before the final battle.

I'm only a passing fan of Transformers, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but does anyone actually like it when these movies force some human dip into the spotlight instead of making the movie entirely about the Transformers themselves? Like, is there precedent for trying to make stilted, cliche human drama the focus of a series that's ostensibly about transforming robots from space, or is that just a Michael Bay thing?

No one does, but think of it like why Hollywood's Godjira sucked ass because it only had like 12 minutes (or 8?) of the titular character. That's because of three things

1. CG characters (towering ones) are expensive as fuck to animate given the huge "end of the world" plots the movies have.

2. Producers and hollywood fuckers still believe that a big name actor will rake in the money instead of the Transformers themselves.

3. Transformers got an audience because there's no competition in the robots fist fucking each other genre, and the higher ups took the wrong idea of "it's because of Michael bay and explosions". It was only after AoE when they decided "maybe we should give the bots a bit of a go" to which they did, but not as much as the audience would want.

The only film I know that actually uses its CG characters the best is the Planet of the Apes reboot movies but that's because besides the competent staff, they use Mocap for the fairly small CG characters, which is where TMNT got its pros and cons. Pro that they get more screentime than Transformers, Con that they're not the central because of Megan Fox (and lack of audience)

I'm sure we would get over it if the human stuff was actually good, but it never is. And even if it was, would it really be Transformers? Because usually Transformers features Transformers as the main characters with the great stories.

Big movie producers believe that if you don't have a physical human in the middle of things in a live action movie, the story won't be as engaging, and you will lose audience and money. I guess they also do it to save money on CG.

The movies might focus way more on them than needed, but it is needed for the casual movie goer, these movies aren't made for hardcore TF fans they're made for family audiences

That being said, yeah humans were always a part of Transformers, it is just the Beast Era brats who have a problem with it
