Unfortunately, most of the artists these days seem to confuse "realistic" with either "thick/thicc" or "curvy," the former of which has become a catch-all for borderline fat character design and the latter of which has started to become synonymous with borderline obese character design. 90% of western artists like to copy each other's stylistic choices (I personally blame Tumblr because at least /co/ and /ic/ will tell you you're shit and occasionally offer constructive criticism), instead of putting in the effort to study anatomy and proper composition.

I'll tell you right now I have pretty much no artistic talent, but even I know that the biggest issue with their shitty style comes from the tendency to either keep the most basic aspects without trying to improve on composition, or only focusing on improving one aspect of said composition. They don't try and add any detail to overall character design beyond the most basic of shapes and don't try to keep them consistent (someone can show you the graphic on Steven Universe's art before and after Ian Jones-Quarterly jumped ship because at least he tried to keep SOME level of consistency), don't know how the effects of gravity would work on the flabby body type they fetishize, their eye and ear design shows laziness in terms of composition (usually choosing an overly simplistic design for the eyes so they don't have to draw the lids and completely ignoring the c-y-hole/bump characteristics of the basic ear shape) which they try and compensate with by attempting to make the nose more stylized and/or realistic, but doing that without stylizing the rest of the face just draws attention to it (hence the Tumblr Nose meme), and since composition is such a big part of trying to draw a human body, truly realistic body shapes tend to get butchered or exaggerated.

As for Marvel/DC, that's a stylistic choice. Pic related shows how comics choose form over function to for their character designs,

Which I suppose makes sense given that they're in the business of making money, and if you're trying to do that, you're going to be instructing your artists to draw muscles that are easy on the eye instead of functional to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

But yeah, I feel you. The only artists I know of that can pull off realistically imperfect AND idealized tend to draw porn or cheesecake (Feguimel and Teh Dave come to mind), and barely any Marvel or DC artists are able to balance fat and muscle throughout the body properly, and if they do, it's never on men because not enough people outside /fit/ tend to want to see the whole strongman physique on a guy. Hell, the only female character designs I can remember that tried to mix form with function were either pic related, or New 52's Fairchild.

I'm trying to remember who was the artist on the She-hulk series a few years ago that did this pretty well. She wasn't drawn like you normally see her, but she was bulky. In fact, she had to bulk up even more (as Jennifer Walters) to fight Champion of the Universe - and the artist drew him that way, too.
