He didn't know where Jack was either and hadn't seen him in 50 years.

As for Ashi being a wasted character, that falls on the writer aka Genndy. His style is basic with forced symbolism and allegory. Had a more competent writer taken the lead, Ashi would've been a more flushed out character with the romance actually made more interesting instead of "feeling too forced" as you'd drone on about. In fact, had the episodes been say an hour long, there would've been more time for interaction and extra development.

As a MAJOR Jashifag I totally agree, albeit for differing motivations.
They should have either kept her till the end, or not have her at all. I especially feel this way because of the manner in which she "died", if it was conventional it would have been more meaningful, but the gurren laggan ending was absolute horseshit and spat in the face of fans.
