Presumably something like Six is what you get when the process is executed flawlessly. You get the right amount of drugs, you get the right body, etc. For all we know the process is meant to be a completely painless, transcendent experience for the followers and what we saw is just an example of how horribly, horribly wrong it can go.

The assembly of a Furby doll is a pretty grotesque process - eyes, ears, mouth, limbs being jammed into a plastic shell in a vague analog of an organic body... but once the process is finished and you get the fur on and everything it looks quite happy and cuddly.

... put those same bits and bones into the skin of, say, a beanie bay and... well the results would probably be pretty fucking horrific.
