You know, I like capeshit VASTLY more when the superheroes exist seperate from each other, just the mere fact that galactus is out there eating worlds diminishes the stakes of many stories. It also limits the world building and the characterisation of the superhero's own world
Don't you think they went overboard with the crossover thing? Cross-overs could be fine, if non-canonical I feel.
Or another idea: if there's a cross over the 'visiting' character is altered to fit within the lead hero's world, resulting in parallel canons
thoughts?

Great news for you then - they already do unless it's an event. They always did.

Not really. A shared universe is fine as long as everyone sticks to their niche. A cosmic-tier character existing in the same world as a street-level character doesn't diminish either. If anything, it makes sense that a world of superheroes would inspire such vigilantes. It's only a problem if those settings start to mix. Batman being part of the Justice League is probably the worst thing to happen to him in hindsight. He's barely even a detective anymore.

what I'm getting at is that it passively limits worldbuilding and characterisation to an extent
How is it a crossover
When a Batman teams up with Ninja Turtles, that's a crossover. When Spider-Man teams with the Fantastic Four, it is not

just because there are dictators threatening nations with atom bombs, doesn't mean you should be fine with a burglar stealing your shit or a murderer stabbing you.
There's nothing wrong with smaller stakes

It should be, I feel that this common universe thing is kind of sucky.

It matters as it pulls the series from its roots for the sake of creating a threat that would require multiple heroes, it creates a powercreep and causes things like '9/11 never happened in the dc universe because the heroes should have prevented it, they beat much worse than this', you see what I mean?
It also results in the stories serving the common universe rather than a common universe serving the story.
